ETCETERA:
The Birth of Baby Carrots
Did you know that baby carrots
were created to
give ugly carrots a chance at being
sold? In 1986, a California carrot
farmer sprouted the idea to cut
and peel imperfect, unwanted
full-grown carrots into identical
2-inch pieces, and they were an
instant hit at grocery stores.
Packaged baby carrots now make
up nearly 70 percent of carrot
sales.

Who Invented the Umbrella?
_____
______
______
Over 4,000 years ago, while originally
used for shade, the Chinese waxed and
lacquered paper parasols for rain
protection.
The word “umbrella” comes
from“umbra” meaning shade. While
considered only appropriate for women,
Parisian traveler Jonas Hanway
(1712-’86) used one publicly in England
for 30 years, popularizing such among
men. English gentlemen often referred to
their umbrellas as a Hanway.
In 1852, Samuel Fox invented the steel
ribbed design, while in 1928, Hans
Haupt invented the pocket model.
As of 2008, the U.S. Patent Office
registered 3,000 active patents on
umbrella-related inventions.

SUPER FOODS for BETTER HEALTH!
WATERMELON
A heavyweight in the nutrient department,
a standard serving (about 2 cups) of watermelon has
one-third of a day’s vitamins A and C,
a nice shot of potassium
and a healthy dose of lycopene
for only 90 fat-free, salt-free calories.
Sooooo delicious!

What Is “the Big and
Loud Program”?
Christian Care’s Outpatient Physical
Therapy is now certified to offer a
globally recognized program for
improving communication and
movement in individuals with
Parkinson’s Disease.
Two of our therapists are now certified
to teach what is popularly called
‘The Big and Loud Program”.
The BIG part uses exaggerated
movement to address limb control,
while the LOUD portion motivates
increasing volume.
Questions should be directed to Robin
Allen, Medical Office Manager in our
Home Health building.
While we focus
on being
a safe and secure
campus,
please
do not leave anything
important
on walkers or carts
left unattended in a
common area
while you are away.
Thank You!

Managers’ Reminder:
Please get a Work Order Number
when you call Maintenance,
and, if no action in 5 days,
then notify the Managers.
THANK YOU !
Each new Manors resident receives
complete documentation from the
managers, plus a welcoming letter
from the Services Coordinator
outlining what’s available.
Some outside agency assistance is
based upon income levels, and some
are open to any applicant.
As details change over time, we
recommend that residents seek
management for answers to policy or
procedure questions.
We are here to help each person
make the most of apartment
community life! Please explore our
20-acre campus and its
common-area amenities!
(We hope new residents will allow
their photo to be displayed in this
news! Photos help others get to
know you faster!)
“Will the EMTs Respect My ‘DNR’?”
Emergency Medical Transporters (EMTs) + Paramedics
should honor a patient’s wishes to NOT have CPR or other resuscitative efforts IF a
proper DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) Form is visible to them upon entry to the
apartment (or is on file with Safety/Security to tell them en route).
Thank You,
Volunteers!
A DNR order is only applicable when the heart or breathing has stopped. Patients
with DNR orders receive FULL treatment for conditions like pain, shortness of
breath and bleeding (“comfort care”).
April 23–29 is
National Volunteer
Week,
a time to honor those
who serve their
community!
At any time, should one decide to receive full treatment (e.g., CPR), then the DNR
order will be disregarded. Simply tell the EMTs/paramedics that you do wish
resuscitative efforts and to ignore the DNR sheet.
For DNR Form, please contact the Services Coordinator.

_________
“Why the ‘R’ In ‘MRS?”
Centuries ago, the woman of the house
was called “mistress”, which was also
the term for a governess. Eventually the
abbreviation “Mrs” became the title for
married women, while men used “Mr”
(pronounced “master”).
By the end of the 18th century the
women’s moniker was shortened to
“missus” (and “mistress” got a new
connotation!).
