AUSTIN, TEXAS Chartered in 1839 as the capital of the Republic of Texas, Austin became the state capital when Texas was admitted to the Union in 1846 as the twentyeighth state. Austin is now the fourth largest city in the state and the eighteenth largest in the nation. Austin is in Travis County. The Austin-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties. Council Members are elected at-large for staggered three-year terms.
