Liturgy Notes for Lent “Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter” (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar #27). “Lent is marked by two themes, the baptismal and the penitential. By recalling or preparing for baptism and by repentance, this season disposes the faithful, as they more diligently listen to the word of God and devote themselves to prayer, to celebrate the paschal mystery. The music for liturgy during Lent should reflect the baptismal and penitential characteristics of the season. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy # 109). Lent is the season where God’s mercy and compassion is so eloquently presented in the Lectionary readings. You can choose appropriate music from your hymnals or from the many music resources that have been made available for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Judicious selection of music is important and not every hymn need speak of mercy. The liturgy itself is a celebration of God’s abundant love and mercy. PARTS OF THE MASS During Lent and to highlight the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Penitential Rite can be sung. There are various Mass settings which use either the Greek Kyrie Eleison or the English Lord have mercy. The Gloria is omitted during Lent as it is festive in nature. It is sung for the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and again at Easter. Psalms for Lent Instead of using one of the psalm selections given in the Liturgy Planner, seasonal psalms can be used instead of the set psalm for the Sunday. You may wish to use the same Lenten seasonal psalm for the entire season. Psalm 50 (51) Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (CWB1 202 /CWB2 92/ GA 40, 41 / G-USA /AOV 2 –21/ PFAT/ PSYA/ RPA /FIWS) Psalm 90 (91) Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. (CWB 203 / GA 52, 53 / G (USA)/PFAT /PSYA/ RPA/ FIWS) Psalm 129 (130) With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption. CWB 204 / GA 76,77/ G (USA)/PFAT/PSYA /RPA Seasonal responses: Remember, O Lord your faithfulness and love. (CWB1 205, 206) Check other settings for seasonal psalms from the Psalms Collections listed above. The Gospel Acclamation. The Alleluia is not used in Lent either for Masses or the Liturgy of the Hours. In this season of purification and conversion, the alleluia, “which gives a glimpse of final destiny, is put aside, so that it can be taken up with renewed joy at Easter.” 2 The Lenten Gospel acclamations are: o Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! o Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! o Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus Christ! o Glory to you, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ! HYMNS The penitential character of Lent can be emphasised by careful choice of music. Aim for singing the parts of Mass. Be sparing the number of hymns you use. Consider silence at the Procession of Gifts and respond to the Presider’s Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation…….. Consider an organ postlude or silence after the final blessing and dismissal. This is particularly effective for the Passion Sunday liturgy. Choose a couple of hymns or chants which can be used throughout the Lenten season. This may include music that can be used on Good Friday. Some of the chants from Taizé or the Iona community can be used to great effect: O Lord, hear my prayer; Jesus remember me, Bless the Lord, my soul (Taize); Wonder and Stare; O Brother Jesus (Iona). Br Michael Herry fms has written a collection of chants for various occasions (Sing Spirit, Sing Life!) Although out of print, the music is now available for free download. http://www.maristmusic.org.au/sing-spirit-sing-life/ Free downloadable music for the Sundays of Lent (related to the Scripture readings): http://www.maristmusic.org.au/new-album-1/ (from Br Michael Herry fms) Please note: downloading sheet music requires usage to be reported in accordance with the copyright licence regulations. A Prayer Seeking God St Ambrose (339-397) is remembered as a prayerful, kind and holy person who had the capacity to connect with the people. The following prayer is attributed to him: O Lord teach me to seek you, and reveal yourself to me when I seek you. For I cannot seek you unless you first teach me, nor find you unless you first reveal yourself to me. Let me seek you in longing, and long for you in seeking. Let me find you in love, and love you in finding.
