Hoffman Elementary Art 2016-17 Vol 5
March 17, 2017
SMART NEWS
We put the ART in SMART
Third Grade
Over, under, over, under. Pattern
can be found all around. The
third graders focused on pattern
and texture as they wove on a
loom that they created.
Fourth Grade
Primary. Secondary. Warm. Cool.
Complementary. These are all
components of the color wheel
that the fourth grade students
are learning about and
incorporating into their art
projects. Through puzzles, smart
board activities, games and
projects, learning the color
wheel can be fun.
Fifth Grade
Gargoyles are used for function
and decoration. After sketching
ideas for a gargoyle head, the
artists will be sculpting their
creations out of clay.
Introducing sculptural medium is
exciting because those students
that may not be skilled in 2D art
often blossom using clay.
Manipulating this soft pliable
substance engages hand and
brain differently offering a new
path to express creativity.
Complementary
Colors
The fourth grade artists have been learning about the
color wheel. One important color family is the
complementary color pairs. When placed side by side
they create a lot of visual excitement. What better way
to enhance that, than to mix it with Op Art. The
students had the opportunity to choose the Op Art
project they wanted to complete and color it with
complementary colors using colored pencils or markers.
Once complete, they had the opportunity to create a
sphere using my Quiver app.
Look up, look down, art is all around

Inspirational thoughts
created by some 5th
grade artists
Weaving
Weaving is done all around the world by young and old, rich and
poor. The third grade artists “traveled around the world” to see
some beautiful examples of weaving. Some students even
recognized weaving representative of their culture.
Terracotta Warriors
The Hoffman LRC is currently
being protected by clay warriors
built by the fourth grade artists.
Stop by to see the army.
Print Making
The fifth grade artists completed their print making project with
great success. After being introduced to the print making
process, they created their own backgrounds and image to be
printed. This mixed media project allowed the artists to
experiment with different medium and choose the one they were
most comfortable with.

April 17th-21st is Good Deeds WeekA Spirit Day Sponsored by Hoffman Student Board
The student board representatives will be selecting 5 good deeds for the students to
participate in during the week. Each morning, the good deed of the day will be
announced to the student body. The goal is for students to try and complete the good
deed throughout the day. Examples would be: hold the door for someone, play with a
new friend at recess, give 5 genuine compliments, etc.
Spirit days are created by and voted on by the student body. Spirit days are optional to
participate in and meant to be a fun element added to a normal day of learning. Spirit
days promote connections between students in different grade levels and provide an
opportunity for students to bond over a shared interest or task.
