Despite somewhat depleted numbers this year, the quality of entries for the
Scarecrow competition this year was as high as ever. The theme was
extended from the original one of James Bond characters to include other
spies and detectives and as such we had a wide range of entries. Dave and
Julie Cape’s entry of Goldfinger poking the Goldeneye deserves mention for
7 July Cyclist Return +Croquet 3pm its abstract approach, while the Turner family’s Dangermouse was an
uncannily accurate representation, earning it second place. Other featured

characters were Hercule Poirot, Odd Job x2 and Sheriff JW Pepper (from a

Accounts Manager for Bence Exhibitions and Simon is Project manager for Leading Edge Design.
On 8th July Harriet Febry (Harri to her friends) will be 18 years old. She has lived in Cotswold Lane all of her life and
is the fourth generation of her family to live in the village. Harri attends Chipping Sodbury School where she is studying for her ‘A’ Level exams. She has recently passed her driving test which makes it easier for her to carry out her
favourite hobby which is socialising!!!
On 18th May Aaron Stone and Jessica Morley were married at St Johns Church to a moving and romantic service
conducted by Jane Kenchington. Their themed wedding which brought a touch of circus colour to Old Sodbury with
striking yellow and reds, was enjoyed by all in the sunshine. John Edgar’s lawn at The Hayes was filled with children
juggling and practising their circus skills whilst cream scones and bubbly was served. A marquee was turned into a
circus tent at Rock Cottage and was the venue for the evening festivities which included a sweet shop, disco, fireworks, bouncy castle, hoopla, other assorted games and a Hog Roast.
Aaron and Jess would like to thank John Edgar, Joan and John Harris, Sarah and Andy Williams for all their help.
Old Sodbury was an amazing setting for a fabulous day and we hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.
Pam Wake would like to say “Thank You all very much for the donations of cakes etc for the Pantry Stall at Village
Day. Also a big thank you to the people who came and purchased items. The stall made £136 which will go to the
Village Hall Funds.”
Over the weekend of 5-7th July 20 cyclists will be cycling from Plymouth back to their homes in Old Sodbury, raising
money for Clic Sargeant and the Village Hall jointly. They are due to arrive at The Hayes on Sunday afternoon. To
welcome them on their return The Hayes garden will be open from 3pm with limited refreshments available and
croquet on the lawn. Please come along to support them and bring your own drinks. They should be back by 5pm.
The Old Sodbury Village Hall Committee AGM will be held on Tuesday 6th August at 8pm in the Village Hall.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and are invited to contribute their suggestions for any improvements that are required, any activities you would like to see in the hall, or any other thoughts on the management and maintenance of the Hall

Old Sodbury Primary School
It has again been a very busy term at Old Sodbury CE school. The
Chipping Sodbury festival week has kept us really busy. The children have had all their art work displayed in
the church and we had a wonderful carnival float that was made by a very dedicated set of parents. The children also performed in the town hall a selection of Beatles classics so we were very busy preparing for all of
this! We were also lucky enough to have good weather for our sports day, which all of the children thoroughly
enjoyed. Many thanks to any of you who attended our promises auction back in May, a wonderful amount of
money was raised for the school as a result. We also had a change of Headteacher for a day, as one of the pupils
won the chance to run the school. The children had a non school uniform day as a result but we did make sure that they had lots of duties
to perform and paperwork to sort out! Didn’t want them thinking that
the job was too easy!
Our end of year show will be held at Chipping Sodbury Secondary
School on Thursday the 18th of July with performances at 2.30pm and
6.30pm. Please contact the school if you would like to come, all welcome! We also have our leavers’ service in the church on Wednesday
the 24th July at 9.15am when we say goodbye to all our wonderful
year 6 pupils. Again all welcome.

Sodbury Short Mat Bowls Club
The Bowls club has had good attendance during the
spring season and members have enjoyed playing on
Monday and Thursday evenings most weeks. Last
month we welcomed another new member who is
keen to learn the game.
Our Annual “Denis’s Day” has been postponed until
the Autumn as not enough members were available
to take part in the competition in May.
On a very windy Village day our Bowls Club ran a
popular Tombola. Strong gusts were determined to
blow the prizes over but we stood them up again and
raised £125! We will be pleased to donate this towards the Village Hall funds.
During July and August the Bowls Club will be
meeting at the Village Hall on Mondays only.

OLD SODBURY W.I.
During May we celebrated our 94th Birthday. We enjoyed a members Pudding evening with wine and a quiz. The meeting was a lovely opportunity
to mingle & chat to other members.
In June, a passionate talk from Richard Cornock who helps run the family farm in Tytherington was most interesting. The family have been farming there since 1822. Richard’s keen interest in the farm encouraged him
to keep a digital photograph diary, which led him to publishing, “A Year on a Dairy Farm”.
Ladies of the WI enjoyed providing Cream Teas at Village Day.
Our next meeting, 17th July:- The mysteries of Chinese martial Arts. Visitors are always welcome.
Our competition is a Tussie Mussie. (Not sure what this is – ask a WI member!)
Village Day Show June 22nd What luck the day was DRY though overcast, enabling everyone to set up
stalls, sideshows etc and those entering the Show section could deliver their entries intact. Many thanks to all
entrants who gave visitors an insight into the talent in the area. There were sufficient entries to make it interesting and perhaps spur others to enter in the future.
The judges bear in mind that there are probably ‘old hands’ and novices competing together so congratulations
to all prize winners and trophy recipients and good luck to everyone when they next enter. Experience is gained
every time you enter a show, so why not have a go - there’s a year ahead for you to pluck up courage!
Ideas for future classes to suit untapped talent would be most gratefully received so please ring me on
01454 318523 if you have any ideas, requests or suggestions. I hope to see you and your friends and neighbours
entering the next show.
Appreciation must go to everyone who helped the day go so well- erecting tents, gazebos and tables; serving
teas, manning stalls and sideshows, and providing entertainment to suit everyone. Thanks also to the loyal
supporters who give our coffers a boost by coming to participate and spend on the attractions.
Regards and Thanks Jill Rumney

CHAIRMAN AWARD FOR HARD WORK FOR THE CLUB - Jon Rendell
Louise Deane received an award for hard work connected with the new pavilion and fund raising
The club will be entering the Fry’s Eleven-a-side knock out cup in July.
The new pavilion is getting close to start with the water supply being put in mid June and building
due to start by the end of June/early July. It should be completed by the end of the year. We still need
a little more funding to put the finishing touches to this project. A lot of people have worked hard
over the last four years to make this happen for the village. Well done to all those concerned.
SEE YOU ALL NEXT SEASON - Laurence Walker
The Tourist Information Centre
How fortunate we are to live in such a fantastic area, surrounded by beautiful countryside with easy access to the motorways and within easy reach of Bath and Bristol and
with a community that gets things organised. The recent annual Festival, Jazz Festival,
Big Lunch, Chipping Sodbury Classic Car Run and the upcoming Beer Festival all go to
show what a thriving, enthusiastic and strong community we have around here. Sometimes we take this all for granted and it is only when someone from out of our area prods
our consciousness, that we realise just how fortunate we are.
Recently we were visited at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) by a gentleman from Brazil. He was visiting to
research a book he was in the process of writing about his family and had come to this area to find where his Great,
Great, Great Grandfather had lived. We keep a reference copy of the book ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlemaker – Chipping
Sodbury from 1795’ book produced by the ‘Sodbury Vale Family History Group’ , in which we found details of his
relative, George Whittingham, living in Hill House on The Parade, Chipping Sodbury in 1804. We found further
reference to his relative in ‘The Three Sodburys’ by Gordon Tily but in this book his relative is called ‘Mr Whittington’ of Hill House, (Difficulty with deciphering handwriting is assumed to have led to this variance). This was
information he couldn’t find on the internet. He took away with him several copies of the ‘Chipping Sodbury Circular
Walk and Treasure Hunt’ leaflet which gives information about lots of the buildings in Chipping Sodbury, (And of
course the Treasure Hunt suitable for all ages from 3- 103 years old) to show his family. He told us when he returned
to Brazil he was going to tell his whole family to come to this area and how delighted he was to have met so many
friendly people, who had given him so much time and shown him so much kindness. He had visited Chipping
Sodbury Golf Club and was staying at The Cross Hands in Old Sodbury and by the sounds of it had chatted to a large
portion of the local population. Our volunteers are always glad to spend time helping people find the information they
are searching for whether they are from the other side of the world or living locally. If you haven’t been in to the TIC
recently please feel free to call in. We are open 10am – 5pm Monday – Saturday (Except Wednesday when we close
12:30 -1:30). We sell local maps, books, pictures and postcards as well as tickets for local events. We have lots of
information on local walks, buses, trains and events, as well as information on attractions within a 50 mile radius.
Alternately, if you feel you would like to volunteer at the TIC, please give us a call on 01454 888686 or email
[email protected] or call into the TIC at The Clock Tower, High Street, Chipping Sodbury, BS37 6AH.
Old Sodbury Panto April seems a long time ago, but shortly after the last newsletter went to press Glynis Pitman
sent the Times a note saying how much she would like to congratulate everyone involved in the production and how
enjoyable it was and well worth seeing. I’m sure everyone who went will echo those thoughts.
