Grant Highlights
The Windgate Charitable Foundation
awarded Azusa Pacific University
a 1:2 challenge grant of $3 million
to establish scholarships for art
majors and support a graduate program that equips
student leaders in the field of art education. Azusa
Pacific reached the goal by raising $1.5 million, which
increased the total art endowment to $4.5 million
and constitutes the university’s second-largest
endowment to date. Azusa Pacific’s School of
Nursing received three grants totaling more than
$2 million from the U.S. Department of Health &
Human Services, Health Resources & Services
Administration (HRSA). The awards assist in
developing nurse practitioners in diverse and medically
underserved populations and increasing the number
of faculty to teach graduate and doctoral nursing
students who plan to enter the teaching profession.
HRSA awarded $1.2 million to the Department of
Social Work to fund scholarships for full-time Master
of Social Work (MSW) students from disadvantaged
backgrounds who are interested in training and
working in integrated behavioral health care settings
in medically underserved areas. Lilly Endowment, Inc.,
granted $599,614 to support the Youth Leadership
Initiative project, part of APU’s Center for Vocational
Ministry, which cultivates resilience in ministry
students and leaders through formational resources
over the lifespan of their ministry.
School of Theology
Names New Dean
Robert R. Duke, Ph.D., was named
dean of the School of Theology in
fall 2016. An Old Testament and
Dead Sea Scrolls expert, Duke works with the
Museum of the Bible Scholars Initiative as the
western region director and distinguished scholar
of Hebrew texts. His passion for foster children and
extensive work with foster agencies on their behalf
give Duke rich experience with interfaith partnerships
that inform his philosophies as dean. He oversees
Azusa Pacific Seminary, the Undergraduate Division
of Religion and Philosophy, and the new Center for
Vocational Ministry.

to their respective fields add to APU’s expanding
academic reputation. Among APU’s notable
accomplishments, 3 students were named Fulbright
scholars in 2016, bringing the total number of
recipients to 11 faculty and 35 students since 2003,
and positioning APU faculty and students among
the world’s elite scholars seeking global engagement
and understanding from a Christian perspective.
