Forbes’ annual ranking, which distinguishes the top 20 percent of all U.S. undergraduate institutions, placed Azusa Pacific University at 391 out of 660 this year. The Princeton Review designated APU as 1 of 124 institutions in the “Best Western Colleges” section of its 2017 Best Colleges guide. For the fifth consecutive year, APU was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine, while Military Times included APU on its Best For Vets: Colleges 2017 list, affirming the university’s commitment to its 500 veteran and active-duty military students and their families. Grant Highlights The Windgate Charitable Foundation awarded Azusa Pacific University a 1:2 challenge grant of $3 million to establish scholarships for art majors and support a graduate program that equips student leaders in the field of art education. Azusa Pacific reached the goal by raising $1.5 million, which increased the total art endowment to $4.5 million and constitutes the university’s second-largest endowment to date. Azusa Pacific’s School of Nursing received three grants totaling more than $2 million from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). The awards assist in developing nurse practitioners in diverse and medically underserved populations and increasing the number of faculty to teach graduate and doctoral nursing students who plan to enter the teaching profession. HRSA awarded $1.2 million to the Department of Social Work to fund scholarships for full-time Master of Social Work (MSW) students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in training and working in integrated behavioral health care settings in medically underserved areas. Lilly Endowment, Inc., granted $599,614 to support the Youth Leadership Initiative project, part of APU’s Center for Vocational Ministry, which cultivates resilience in ministry students and leaders through formational resources over the lifespan of their ministry. School of Theology Names New Dean Robert R. Duke, Ph.D., was named dean of the School of Theology in fall 2016. An Old Testament and Dead Sea Scrolls expert, Duke works with the Museum of the Bible Scholars Initiative as the western region director and distinguished scholar of Hebrew texts. His passion for foster children and extensive work with foster agencies on their behalf give Duke rich experience with interfaith partnerships that inform his philosophies as dean. He oversees Azusa Pacific Seminary, the Undergraduate Division of Religion and Philosophy, and the new Center for Vocational Ministry. Making a Difference As Scholars The Carnegie designation as a doctoral research institution marked APU’s entrance into the nation’s most prestigious academic community, differentiated by continued focus on teaching and developing research inspired by the needs of the world and informed by faith. Faculty contributions to their respective fields add to APU’s expanding academic reputation. Among APU’s notable accomplishments, 3 students were named Fulbright scholars in 2016, bringing the total number of recipients to 11 faculty and 35 students since 2003, and positioning APU faculty and students among the world’s elite scholars seeking global engagement and understanding from a Christian perspective. Through Athletics More than 450 student-athletes compete for the university’s 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program. APU produced 16 All-Americans and 167 Academic All-Conference selections in the 2015-16 school year, which was APU’s first year of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II active membership. A past eight-time winner of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ prestigious Directors’ Cup, APU finished 17th for the second consecutive year in the 2015-16 NCAA Division II Directors’ Cup standings. Many Cougar athletes have also gone on to successful careers in professional sports: 14 athletes have competed in the Olympics, including 2008 decathlon gold medalist Bryan Clay ’03, and 50 other alumni have been drafted into other professional sports, including Christian Okoye ’87, former Kansas City Chiefs running back; Stephen Vogt ’07, Oakland Athletics catcher; Kirk Nieuwenhuis ’08, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder; and Terrell Watson ’15, Denver Broncos running back. collaborative network of offices and programs, Including outreach in 20 countries. For the eighth consecutive year, Azusa Pacific has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary leadership in civic engagement, service-learning, and building community partnerships. APU undergraduates perform more than 165,000 hours of service each year locally and globally. By Example Juli (McGowan ’01) Boit, 2016 Distinguished Alumna of the Year, built a ministry dedicated to hospice care in Kenya. Living Room Ministries offers dignity and quality of life to those battling life-threatening illnesses. Boit recognizes the key to caring for the sick and dying goes beyond treatment and medicine to loving and caring for the whole person. Doctor of Physical Therapy students annually travel to Kenya to apply their learning in the care of her patients. Jerson Anzola ’18, physical education major and Army veteran, demonstrates perseverance in the face of trials, including suffering a traumatic brain injury while serving in Afghanistan and the loss of both his parents. The Colombia native and Azusa resident plans to give back to his community by becoming a physical education teacher and youth mentor. Margarita Ramirez ’12 moved to the United States from Mexico at 10 years old. Despite financial challenges, she worked hard to be the first in her family to attend college. A scholarship to Azusa Pacific opened the doors for her to pursue her dreams.
