It gives me great pleasure to introduce our short courses.
These courses cover a specific subject at a certain level. You
will find a detailed description of each course on the following
pages.
What is included in the Course Price?
All courses include comprehensive notes or textbooks. The notes are well
structured and include plenty of exercises. The notes are also excellent
reference guides for later use.
The work is thoroughly explained by lecturers with experience in that subject.
They take you step-by-step through the work. The courses are very practical and
practical exercises are done throughout the course to ensure that attendees
understand the work.
All courses are ended with a strict practical examination to test your proficiency
and to receive a certificate. After completion of the course, an attendee also has
unlimited e-mail support on completed subjects.
The day courses also include coffee/tea and a light lunch.
Schedules for Short Courses:
Starting dates for our courses are scheduled on demand. Courses can be booked to
suit your schedule, depending on availability of our trainers. We also have individual
classes (one-to-one training) at extra cost for those people who cannot wait for a group
course to start. Our Certificate Courses are from 08:30 till 15:00 on weekdays, with a
lunch break at 11:30.

We only offer evening courses on exception when we have at least 4 people attending
an evening class. We also try to accommodate people interested in attending evening
classes with our Diploma students. When the Diploma students are doing that specific
subject, we can arrange for you to join them in class. Evening class times are from
17:00 – 19:00.
Bookings for Short Courses:
To make a booking, you can do one of the following:
 Complete a Booking form with dates suitable to you and fax it to us. We will
then confirm if we have a trainer available for those specific dates.
 Phone us and ask for available dates. Then fax the Booking Form. Dates will
only be reserved once we've received the Booking Form.
 Ask us to supply you with a quotation with available dates. Unfortunately the
dates cannot be guaranteed until we’ve received your Booking form.
 A list of our scheduled courses is available on our web-site www.gigaskills.co.za
(Click on the Schedules link at the left side). These courses have been
scheduled to start on the dates specified. You are welcome to book for those
courses. Fax or e-mail a Booking form as soon as possible.
 You are also welcome to come to our offices and do the bookings with us.

Registration forms must still be completed by attendees on the course starting date.
Payment of Short courses:
Fees are strictly payable a week before the course starting date unless prior arrangements have been made.
Once a Booking Form has been received, an invoice will be issued. Invoices need to be paid a week before
course starting date or 30 days within invoice date if prior arrangements have been made.
No fees are refundable. You can, however, replace an attendee with another person that is not on the Booking
Form.
We offer lecturer-led training, and we have to schedule and book our trainers well in advance. Therefore we
have the following conditions:
 Cancellations/Postponements of bookings must be done a week prior to the course starting date in
writing via fax or e-mail.
 Cancellations done less than a week before the course starting date are still liable for the full course
fee for the number of people booked for the course.
 Postponements of courses done less than a week before the course starting date will result in a 25%
fee of the total course price.
Group Classes:
We prefer to teach small classes in order to ensure that our full attention can be given to each student.
However, we will be more than happy to adapt to suit your requirements. Our classes for Certificate courses
usually don't have more than 12 students in a class and can be as small as only one student in a class.

INTRODUCTORY COURSES:
Introduction to Computers
Computer knowledge required: None
This basic course introduces you to a computer. You will first use a
program that teaches you how to use a mouse with confidence and in the
correct way. Basic Windows skills will then be taught so that you are able
to access the different programs. You also practice the use of dialog boxes
and the different ways of entering information into dialog boxes. The layout
of the keyboard is then explained and plenty of exercises are done where
we show you when and how to use all the different keys. All the major
components of a computer are also discussed.
Computer Literacy
Computer knowledge required: None
This is an Introductory course for people with very little, or no knowledge
of the computer. You will start with Introduction to Computers where you
will become more familiar with the mouse and keyboard, you will also learn
about Paint and WordPad (two programs that come with Windows) and
saving, opening and printing documents.
You will then be introduced to the Windows environment, moving and
sizing windows and the very important concept of copying or cutting
information within one or two documents.
You will learn about Microsoft Word, how to type basic documents, how to
do spell checks, and how to change the appearance of text (including the
size, font, and colour)
You will also be introduced to the Internet and how to send and receive email.
Lastly you will be introduced to Excel where you will learn how to make a
basic spreadsheet and use Excel to calculate simple values.
Typing Skills
Computer knowledge required: None
The course starts of with an explanation of the keyboard and plenty of
exercises are done where we show you when and how to use all the
different keys. You will learn how to place your hands and fingers on the
keyboard. This course consists of different exercises where you train your
fingers which key to press for which letter. Speed tests are done throughout the course. It is strongly recommended that this course is taken as
one-hourly sessions over a few days

WINDOWS XP:
Introduction and Intermediate Levels
Windows XP Introduction
Computer knowledge required: Basic mouse, keyboard and typing skills
You will get familiarised with Windows by learning how to access the
programs on the computer, how to work with a window, how to save, open
and print a document in WordPad. You will learn to make an easy drawing
with Paint, how to use the Calculator, and how to use Help. You will also
learn the very important concept of copying information within and between
documents.
Some basic problem-solving techniques are covered
throughout the course, including the desktop and understanding bits and
bytes. Other Windows’ features that you will learn include Screensavers,
Wallpapers, and Colour schemes.
Windows XP Intermediate
Computer knowledge required: This is an in-depth course and you should
know basic typing and editing skills as well as how to open and close
programs in Windows. You must know how to Open and Save documents.
An in-depth course on file management. You will firstly be introduced to
the concept of files and folders, how to find files on the computer and how
to install programs. You will then learn how to organise and manage the
files and folders on the computer by using Windows Explorer. This
includes creating new folders, copying, moving, and deleting files and
folders. The Recycle Bin is also covered in detail. You will also learn how
to customise the Start Menu, format a disk, and perform a scandisk.
Windows XP Essentials
Computer knowledge required: Basic mouse, keyboard and typing skills
This course is a combination of the most important chapters of the
Windows Introduction and Intermediate courses and is for people with a
little bit of computer knowledge who need to know a bit more than just the
basics. You start off with an introductory part where you will be familiarised
with Windows by learning how to access the programs, how to work with a
window, how to save, open and print a document. You will also learn how
to copy information between documents. You will then learn how to
organise and manage the files and folders on the computer by using
Windows Explorer. This includes creating new folders, copying, moving,
and deleting files and folders.

MICROSOFT OFFICE:

change the appearance of paragraphs (including line spacing and
numbering of paragraphs). You will also learn how to make changes to

MICROSOFT OFFICE:

Microsoft Word Intermediate
Computer knowledge required: You must be familiar with typing, editing
and formatting in Word. Word introduction is highly recommended.
You will learn to set tabs in order to create lists with ease. You will learn
to add paragraph borders to emphasize information. Headers and footers
will be helpful if you need information, (like page numbers and your
company name, etc) repeated on all the pages of your document. With
AutoText entries you can speed up your work by creating AutoText entries
for all the words and phrases you often use in your documents. Tables
are an excellent way of summarising information for the readers. Creating
a newsletter will be easy after you have learned how to create columns.
Adding pictures to your document can visually improve your document.
Styles will help you to easily format headings in your document.
Microsoft Word Essentials
Computer knowledge required: Basic mouse, keyboard and typing skills
with knowledge of how to Save and Open documents.
This course is a combination of the most important chapters of the
Introduction and Intermediate Word courses. The first four chapters are
from the Word Introduction course where you will learn how to type a
document and find your way in Word. You will learn how to replace, copy
and move information. You will learn how to change the appearance of
text (including the size, fonts, and colours). Then the next three chapters
are from the Word Intermediate course and cover the most essential
features used in documents, like tabs, tables, and graphics.
PowerPoint Introduction
Computer knowledge required: You must be familiar with typing, editing
and formatting in Word and know how to Save and Open documents.
You will learn how to create presentations in PowerPoint that you can use
as a slide show which can be displayed on your screen, or be printed as
overhead transparencies, outlines or printed handouts. You will learn how
to use the drawing tools to create shapes, add pictures and WordArt that
will attract the audience's attention.
You will learn how to add
organizational charts and graphics in your presentation. Finally you will
learn how to run the slide show with transition effects. All the various
printing options are also covered in the course.
Excel Introduction
Computer knowledge required: You must be familiar with typing, editing
and formatting in Word and know how to Save and Open documents.
Computer knowledge is required for this course. After an overview of
Excel, you will learn how to enter information into a spreadsheet and to
use formulas to perform calculations. You will also learn how to navigate
in large spreadsheets and to freeze headings. The third chapter deals with
columns and rows, including how to insert, delete and widen them. Then
you will go on to learn about built-in functions of Excel, including the Sum,
Average, and Count. Copying and moving information is then covered,
with all the tricks (including Absolute References) necessary to copy
formulas and functions without causing errors. The last two chapters deal
with how the information has to appear on screen and on printed paper.

Excel Intermediate
Duration: 2 days
Computer knowledge required: You should be familiar with Excel and be Price :

Min functions. You should also be familiar with Page Set-ups, including
Headers and Footers.
The first chapter shows you how to work and link with more than one sheet.
You will learn how to create charts by selecting the correct data, to modify
the chart to display only certain information, and format the appearance of
the chart. You will also learn to add other graphical elements in a
spreadsheet that can emphasise certain data, for instance a circle around
the lowest sales-figure. You will learn a quick way of entering lists and the
correct way of sorting. Lists can be very long, so you will learn how to
show only certain information in your list with filters. With a well-designed
list, you can also create subtotals.
Access Introduction
Duration: 2 days
Computer knowledge required: You must be familiar with typing, editing
and formatting in Word and know how to Save and Open documents.

Access is a database program, which means you use Access to organise
data in a meaningful way. Examples of databases include employee
information, customer information, and stock – for example a video shop.
You will learn how to plan, design, and create a database. Tables are the
building blocks of a database, and that is covered in detail in this course.
You will learn how to use Queries to organise the data in such a way that
it is meaningful, for example a video shop can use a Query to see which
videos haven’t been returned yet. You will learn how to view and enter
information using a Form and also print information using a Report.
Access Intermediate
Duration: 2 days
Computer knowledge required: This is a follow-up course of the Access Price :
introduction course, and it is highly recommended that you have already
completed that course.
You will learn how to further optimise a database and more about the
design of tables for the database including input masks, default values,
and validation of data. You will learn how to create relationships between
tables, so that you can get combined information from more than one table.
During the course you will learn how to make more complex queries and
also learn how to perform calculations using a query by creating calculated
controls. You will learn how to add nice features to a Form, including
combo boxes and lists. You will also learn how to customize a Report so
that you can use it as a summary.
Outlook
Duration: 2 days
Computer knowledge required: You must be familiar with typing, Price :
editing and formatting in Word and know how to Save and Open
documents.
You will learn to send and receive e-mail, manage schedules, contacts,
and tasks using Microsoft Outlook. You will learn how to send
messages, including messages with attachments and voting buttons.
You will also learn how to respond to messages. Then you will learn
about the management of Appointments and Events. The scheduling
and managing of Meetings is the next very important topic. Included in
that chapter is how to work with meeting requests. You will also learn
how to work with contacts and add their information into Outlook.
Lastly you will learn how to manage a to-do list and your time by using
tasks.

the World Wide Web and send e-mail. The course will also explain
to you how the Internet works. You will learn how to connect to the
internet, surf the Internet by accessing various Web-sites (including
banking), and you will learn how to perform searches for specific
topics on the Internet. You will learn how to download from the
Internet.

ADVANCED MICROSOFT OFFICE and PROJECT COURSES
Word Advanced
Computer knowledge required: You should already be familiar with the
features covered in the Microsoft Word intermediate course.
You will learn how to work with larger, more complicated tables. You will
also be able to create predefined formatting known as Styles. Templates
are documents that will save you time because all the often-used information
has already been set-up (like letterheads). Mail Merge makes creating
envelopes much easier. It is also useful if you want to send out personalised
letters to a lot of people. You will learn how to insert Captions, Indexes,
Footnotes, and cross-references to your documents. You will learn how to
add hyperlinks in your document for easy navigation. Macros are recorded
actions that are performed over and over. By recording a macro you do not
need to repeat the actions many times but simply run the macro to let the
computer do all the work. Outline view will save you time when you want to
re-organize a document. Outline view is also extremely helpful with Master
documents – where you can add subdocuments to a main document. You
can also use this when working in workgroups where different people must
compile or work on different parts of the document, and then have all the
subdocuments in one final document. You will also learn how to add
comments to documents. You will also need to know how to keep track of
changes other users have made to the document, and keep track of different
versions of your document. You will learn how to add organizational charts,
graphs, spreadsheets, and equations to a document. Lastly you will learn
how to create and use forms in Microsoft Word.
Excel Advanced
Computer knowledge required: You should be familiar with Excel and be
able to calculate formulas and use functions – including the Sum, Max and
Min functions. You should also be familiar with Page Set-ups, including
Headers and Footers.
You will learn how to customize the Excel environment to speed up the way
you work. For example you will learn how to add a specific button to the
toolbar, add names to cells, and to create styles for fonts you often use.
Excel has many built-in functions, and some of the most important advanced
functions are covered in detail, including IF and VLOOKUP. You will learn
about errors and the Auditing features that will help you to track these errors.
A PivotTable report is an interactive spreadsheet that you can use to quickly
summarize large amounts of data. You can rotate its rows and columns to
see different summaries of the data, and filter the data by displaying different
pages. You will learn how to work with more than one Excel file and also
create a Workspace file. You can group certain information of your
spreadsheet by using Outlines. You will learn how to consolidate (combine)
data and how to structure a spreadsheet for consolidation. Excel has tools
that you can use to obtain a quick result; you will learn Goal Seek and Solver
to do just that. Scenarios are useful if you have a situation where you want
to see the result of changes made to certain data (“What if I increase my
expenses with 10 %?”) and compare the different scenarios with each other.
You will learn how to protect the spreadsheet, how to hide certain
information, and to make use of Custom Views.

Excel and Visual Basic for Applications

Computer knowledge required: You should be familiar with Excel and be Price :

Headers and Footers. Excel Advance is recommended.
You will learn to create and edit macros. A macro is a series of commands
and functions that are stored in a Visual Basic module and can be run
whenever you need to perform the task. Understanding the Visual Basic for
Applications (VBA) programming language is important, so that you can
write your own code for custom functions, to display message boxes for
users, add input boxes where users can add information and you can also
test the validation of the information. You will examine sample code, learn
how to create macros from scratch, and add your own code to previously
created macros. The course also includes useful Excel features to include
in your macros. You will also learn how to write code to work with different
ranges, write decision-making code with IF and loop through code with FOR.
You will learn how to make your macro available with toolbar buttons,
command buttons, and Add-ins. You will lastly learn how to add dialog box
controls to your spreadsheet, like lists, combo boxes, option buttons, etc.
Excel for Technology Professionals (Excel Advanced and VBA)

This course is a combination of the Excel Advanced and Excel with VBA
courses. Included from the Excel Advanced course is customizing the
working environment, protecting the worksheet, advanced formulas, Goal
Seek, Solver, and Scenarios. Almost all the Excel with VBA chapters is
covered. This course is strongly recommended for people who want to
use Excel mostly for technical calculations, engineering, and modelling.
PowerPoint Advanced

with the features covered in the PowerPoint introduction course.
You will learn the advanced concepts of effectively creating
presentations in PowerPoint. You will first of all learn how to work
with templates to speed up your work. With templates you will
learn how to add design elements, like graphics and logos that are
often used in your presentations. PowerPoint presentations need
to be eye-catching and therefore ClipArt pictures are often used in
them. In this course you will learn how to change these pictures
by taking them apart and changing the colours. Some more
advanced object-drawing techniques will also be learned. You will
also learn how to create tables in PowerPoint and importing
objects, for example a Microsoft Word document or Excel table.
You will learn how to customise PowerPoint, for instance to
customise the toolbar to display your commonly used buttons.
You will also be able to create an interactive presentation by
learning how to work with hyperlinks. To make the presentation
livelier, you will also learn how to add animations and movie clips.

ADVANCED MICROSOFT OFFICE and PROJECT COURSES
Access Advanced
Computer knowledge required: You should already be familiar with the
features covered in the Access intermediate course.
The Access Advanced course will teach you how to create much more
advanced databases with plenty of added functions. You will start off by
learning how to create parameter queries –more interactive queries where
you can specify certain criteria for the queries. You will also learn about
action queries that perform a certain action (like append or delete). You will
learn how to join tables and create queries to get information from different
tables. You will also learn more things that you can do with the Forms and
to group certain options. Creating macros will speed up your work, because
they contain repeated actions or information that need to be completed
automatically, for example if you select a town, the postal code for that town
must be filled in. You will finally learn how to add a sub form – that is a form
within another form. Sub forms are especially effective when you want to
show data from tables or queries with a one-to-many relationship. You will
learn how to customize your form with different pages, how to add pictures
to your database. The last chapter is a project where you build a complex
database.
Report Writing (Includes Advanced Features of Word)
Computer knowledge required: You should already be familiar with the
features covered in the Microsoft Word intermediate course.
You will learn how to lay out letters, memorandums and reports in the correct
way. You will also learn how to structure your grammar in the correct way.
This course also covers advanced features of Word, and you will learn how
to use those features to create a professional-looking report. You will learn
how to add larger tables, styles, captions, indexes, footnotes, comments,
hyperlinks, and cross-references to your reports. Outline view and
subdocuments are also discussed. You will also need to know how to keep
track of changes other users have made to the report, and keep track of
different versions of your report. You will learn how to add organizational
charts, graphs, spreadsheets, and equations to a report.
Microsoft Project 2007
Computer knowledge required: Good mouse, keyboard and typing skills with
knowledge of how to Save and Open documents. Excel introduction is
highly recommended.
This course covers Microsoft Project in detail to assist you to do project
planning and management. Project planning concepts are also covered
throughout the course as guidelines for effective project planning. From
Chapter 1 to 8, you will learn how to create a project plan utilising Microsoft
Project. This is the most important part of any project and all the tricks and
the best way of doing things are learned. You will learn about tasks,
relationships of tasks, calendars, summary tasks, resources, and costs.
