Lesson 1
Title:
What is a Want? What is a Need?
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Unit of Study: Wants and Needs
Estimated Pace: 2-3 Weeks
Abstract: The students will identify the difference between a want and a need.
GLCE:
G5.0.1 Describe ways people use the environment to meet human needs and wants.
E1.0.1 Describe economic wants they have experienced.

How do we use the environment to get what we want and need?
Sequence of Activities:
Day One:
1. Ask students about things that they have wanted before. Ask students things that they need.
2. Give each child in your classroom a picture of an object. Ask them to think about if it is a
want or a need. Have them post it either on a pocket chart, or tape to chart paper under wants
or needs.
3. Show students slide show on wants and needs: http://business.pppst.com/economics.html
Click on wants and needs power point titled: Do You Need It. It is a 3rd grade PowerPoint,
but just skim it with the kids, touching on the most important points.
4. When finished, revisit students’ charts on wants and needs. See if there are things that they
may want to change or leave the same.
*Save pictures for Day Three Activity. You may want to laminate to use each year.
Day Two
1. Revisit what a want and a need are. Ask students: How do we get thing we need / want?
2. Show the students the clip from United Streaming on wants and needs. Title: The
Difference Between Wants and Needs.
3. When finished have students work in pairs. Give each pair of students Formative
Assessment Activity Sheet 1. Have them draw a need on one side and a want on another.
They can label the pictures I Need A…, I Want A…
4. When finished, have them share with class.
Day Three
1. Ask questions to assess prior knowledge of where we get clothes, food, and shelter.
2. Talk briefly about how these things all come from our environment.

3. Show students the following video segments from United Streaming. Stop in between to talk
about them. Then come back and have another discussion.

1. Using magazines, advertisements, or flyers cut out pictures of items humans need to live.
2. Using magazines, advertisements, or flyers cut out pictures of items humans want, but do not
need to live.
3. Students will demonstrate their understanding of wants and needs, by sorting and gluing pictures
to the appropriate places on the Wants and Needs Formative Assessment Activity page.

Title: Trade

Estimated Pace: 3-5 Days
Abstract: Students will recognize situations in which people trade.
GLCE: E1.0.3 Recognize situation in which people trade.
Key Concepts:
• Trade (barter)
Essential Question to Ask:
• Without money, how would we get what we need?
Sequence of Activities:
Day One:
1. Start by giving students an object of choice. (ex: A colored pencil, crayon, sucker, Jolly
Rancher, sticker or anything else you may think of.) Ask the students if they are happy
with the color, flavor, picture of what they have. If someone says no, ask them what they
could do if they were not happy with object. We are looking for the answer, “We could
trade!” Once this is brought up have the kids stand up and trade their object with
someone else if they wish.
2. Talk to the students about what it means to trade things. Give other examples of where
we trade things in the world. EX:
• Trading a library book in the library
• Book Swap with a peer or school-wide
• Five pennies for a nickel
• People trading one item for another using their available resources (goods, services,
and money).
3. Finally ask the students if we took a watch or a bracelet into a grocery store could be
trade it for food? When students say no, ask them what you need to trade in a store to get
food. Money should come up. Talk about how we use money to buy goods and that is a
form of trading too.

Day One:
1. Talk about what a good is. A good is anything you can hold or touch. Make a
list of goods on chart paper.
2. Show United Streaming Video: Production Workers and The Goods They
Make.
3. Have the students draw or make a good with play dough, other materials. Share
with table or whole group.
Day Two:
1. Talk about what a Service is. Services are jobs that people do. Make a list of
Services on chart paper.
2. Show United Streaming Video: Service Workers and The Services They Provide.
3. Have students share one service with a group, or you can show them pictures of a
doctor, teacher, etc. and ask them what service they provide. Use Services Clipart
sheet.
Day Three:
1. Take a look at your two lists from days one and two. Compare what goods and services
are.
2. Show students PowerPoint: Goods and Services (PK-2)

3. Talk about PowerPoint and then have them complete the Goods and Services Formative
Assessment Activity Sheet.
