&
What to look for
Chapter 7
1. What is the title of Ch.7? (p129)
 Negotiating intersections
Chapter 7
2. What is the title of Chapter 7.1? (p.130)
 Searching Intersections.
Chapter 7
3. What is one reason for the large number of collisions at
intersections? (p.132)
 Drivers failure to identify a safe path of travel through the
intersection.
Chapter 7
4. List eight clues to help you identify an intersection
ahead: (p.130)
 Street signs and street lights
 Roadway markings
 Crossing traffic
 Parked vehicles
Chapter 7
4. List eight clues to help you identify an intersection
ahead: (p.130)
 Turning traffic
 Rows of fences and mailboxes
 Traffic stopping
 Power lines
Chapter 7
5. Define the term point of no return. (p. 132)
 Is the point beyond which you can no longer stop safely without
entering the intersection.
Chapter 7
6. Are you allowed to make lane changes within an
intersection? (p. 132)
 No you are not.
Chapter 7
7. Define the term controlled intersection (p.134)
 Is an intersection at which traffic signals or signs
determine the right of way.
Chapter 7
8. What are the two signs that control intersections?
(p.134)
Chapter 7
9. What is a stale green light? (p.136)
 A light that has been green for a long time.
 What clues can help you identify if a green light is
about to change?
Chapter 7
10. What is a delayed green light? (p. 137)
 Indicates that one side of an intersection has a green
light while the light for oncoming traffic remains red.
Searching Intersections

Why is the chance of a collision greater at an
intersection than any other place?…..(next slide)
Searching Intersections

Because many drivers’ paths cross there
The Point of No Return
Point of No Return changes with your speed.

Approaching Intersections


Look for line of sight restrictions…
(Environment, other users)
Blocked View at Stop Sign

What do you do when you approach an intersection and
you can’t tell if it is controlled or not?


When you approach an intersection..
You must scan, scan, scan & look for clues
Approaching Intersections



Determine The type of intersection.
Controlled or Uncontrolled
Search all zones!

Controlled Intersections

Intersection where traffic signals or signs determine right
of way.
Controlled Intersections with Signals


Traffic Signals have 3 lights…
Some have 4th or 5th lights…
Protected Left Turns


When a special left-turn light, arrow lets you turn left.
Sometimes left turns prohibited when left turn signals are
off.
Unprotected Left Turns


You have no green arrow to turn left
You must yield to on coming traffic


Be careful when making Unprotected left turns.
Might be Cameras.
Turns on Red



Before turning right on red light…
Come to a Full stop
Just like a Stop Sign!!
No Right Turn on Red
Uncontrolled intersections



Uncontrolled Intersections- has no signs or signals to
control traffic.
Uncontrolled Intersections- found in areas of light traffic.
Although usually quiet, they can be dangerous.
Approaching Uncontrolled Intersections




Determine if you have an open path of travel.
Search left front, and right front zones…
Make sure they are clear.
Get in the habit of covering the brake before going into
intersection.
Approaching Uncontrolled Intersections



If a vehicle is coming from left or right…
Driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right.
Never assume that the other driver will yield.
Approaching Uncontrolled Intersections


Remember…treat uncontrolled intersection like you
would a yield sign.
Be prepared to stop.
Controlled Railroad Tracks

Controlled railroad crossings have red lights and crossing
gates.
Uncontrolled Railroad Crossings


Uncontrolled railroad crossing = no flashing red light or
crossing gate.
However, they are all marked with a sign as you approach
them.
