TALLAHASSEE — Students
will pay more for tuition and
receive less financial aid under
early drafts of higher education
budget proposals emerging in
the Legislature.
Under pressure to whack hundreds of millions of dollars from
higher education programs,
legislative budget writers have
suggested cuts to nearly every
state-funded financial aid program that exists, from scholarships like the popular Bright
Futures program to the Florida
Resident Access Grants given to
private school students.
Lawmakers in both the House
of Representatives and Senate
have targeted popular programs
such as Bright Futures, which

n the day that Elizabeth
Taylor, 79, died, Joan Holmbeck was marking a happier occasion: her 78th birthday.
On Wednesday, she shared her
story of a rich and colorful life
that indirectly touched Taylor’s, at
least in small ways.
For starters, Holmbeck’s face
appeared with Taylor’s in the 1963
film “Cleopatra” — even if just for
a scene.
In that scene, “(Taylor) had a
mold that supposed to be a mold
Joan Holmbeck posed as Cleopatra in this 1964 Playboy centerfold.
The image has been digitally altered to obscure nudity. Contributed photo
of her face and she was putting makeup on it,” Holmbeck
explained. “That was actually my
face.”

Lawyers: Loughner sent for mental exam

PHOENIX (AP) — The
suspect in the January
shooting rampage that
badly wounded a U.S.
Congresswoman was flown
Wednesday to a specialized
facility in Missouri to
undergo a court-ordered
mental evaluation, and his
lawyers immediately asked
an appeals court for him to be
returned.
Lawyers for Jared Lee Loughner
said in a court filing that he was
taken from Tucson to a federal
Bureau of Prisons medical facility
in Missouri. Loughner was
ordered transferred to have
tests to determine if he
understands the nature and
consequences of the charges
he faces and can assist in his
defense.
Loughner, 22, has pleaded
not guilty to charges
stemming from the Jan. 8
attack that killed six and
wounded 13, including Rep.
Gabrielle Giffords. She remains at a
rehabilitation center in Houston as
she recovers from a bullet wound to
the brain.
