The Ten Commandments
A Children’s Sermon for the First Week of Lent - Exodus 20
Hello, boys and girls! As we gather together during Lent, let’s look at how God uses stones in
the Bible to teach us about his amazing love for us—even though we are still sinners.

What’s a stone? (Show a stone; wait for responses.) Well, a stone is really a bunch of earthy
materials and minerals all crushed together (crush hands around stone) to form a piece of a rock
(show stone again) used for a specific function. Stones can be used to build things, or perhaps to
make jewelry. The stones in the Bible had purposes too! In fact, the Bible teaches something very
suprising about stones. The Bible tells us that “these stones will shout!” What will these stones
do? (Cup hands around mouth; encourage children to answer, “Shout!”) Very good!
The stones we’re going to talk about today are the two stone tablets the Ten Commandments
were written on (show picture of tablets). Moses went up on Mount Sinai, and God wrote ten
(show ten fingers) special laws with his finger (show index finger) on two (show two fingers)
tablets of stone. When Moses came down to bring the Ten Commandments to the Israelites, he
found them worshipping idols. Moses was angry and he threw the stone tablets on the ground.
They broke in pieces! God’s people had broken his laws, and the stones broke, too. “These
stones will ______!” (Encourage children: “Shout!”)
C
Then Moses went back up the mountain and God gave him another set of stones with the
same Ten Commandments. Not only were these stones kept safe by Moses and the Israelites,
but they tried to keep the rules written on them as well. God’s people still should work to keep
those laws today because “These stones will _____!” (Encourage children: “Shout!”) Yes, those
stones with God’s Ten Commandments shout and remind us to never worship any other god,
and to make church have a special place in our lives, and to obey our parents, and to not hurt
people or take their things. So when you are tempted to break one of God’s Commandments,
think of those stone tablets and remember, “These stones will _____!” (Encourage children:
“Shout!”) Are you listening? (Say it softly.) Listen to God’s words on those stones and know that
the power of the Holy Spirit is in you helping you to say “No” to temptation and “Yes” to following God’s laws. They are there for your good, because he loved you enough to die for you!
