I believe this should not only be a wish, but a concrete goal to pursue with the help of everyone and through cooperation to let the continent potential be fully expressed, enabling African countries to achieve the prosperity we all wish them. There is clearly no single solution to problems that have been occurring for decades, but starting to define a blueprint for action, discerning between the positive and the negative aspects, would be useful. Among the best characteristics of the African continent is the low average age of its population, in the majority of the countries under the 20 years of age. It is a young population with half a billion young people under the 19 years of age on a total of one billion ca. that estimates see doubling within the next 25 years. Africa is a young continent to grow. It is an advantageous condition in the global economic scenario, a privilege that has no match in any other area of the planet, both North and South of the Equator. A first criticism connected to the topic of average age is the level of youth unemployment of the continent. Studies carried out by the International Labor Organization reported a substantial negative static level of unemployment among the youth over the past five years. The main challenge for Africa, in the near future, is the level of unemployment amongst the young Africans, especially the most educated, one of the most penalized categories, in contrast to what some might believe. Another important strength of the African continent is its abundance in natural resources. As known, extraction represents one of the main activities driving the exports of Africa, with industries of the sector being the most developed of the continent. Another competitive advantage not fully taken advantage of by the African industrial and economic systems. It will be fundamental to continue with the process of separation from the West underwent in 2015 in Addis Ababa, when the African Union decided to reclaim sovereignty over its natural resources and use them for the social and industrial development of the single member states. An historic and revolutionary decision that will certainly have an important impact also on the developed economies. The Western World, in this scenario of change, can and must have a primary role, finding new model of sustainability in support of the African economies at institutional level, but also keeping up with the various investment of international companies to benefit the local businesses and jobs. A first way of supporting this cause can be the establishment of partnerships for the development of African entrepreneurship, through networks of best-practice sharing, but also through vocational training as to facilitate the learning of methods and skills. The goal is to create a generation of African entrepreneurs able to sustain the various economies of the continent through the creation of jobs. A class of entrepreneurs finding strength in Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus’ motto: “we are not job-seekers, we are job givers.” The creation of employment opportunities is a necessary condition for the growth of the African continent. At the same time, this could also represent a way to reduce migration, a phenomenon motivated by several factors and that is impoverishing entire countries in Africa, eroding its pool of young and promising individuals. I believe this is a key element in the debate on the centrality of Africa in the global economic landscape and the only way to approach it: estimates suggest that if African economy’s growth would reach 6%, economic migration towards Europe would end. Work is one of the key concepts for the development of the African continent, no doubts about that. Employment opportunities can be the engine and the fuel for achieving the growth and prosperity objectives I was referring to. Facilitating entrepreneurship could also be a way to create favorable conditions for the achievement of the different goals of United Nations’ “Agenda 2030” and African Union’s “Agenda 2063”. I’m happy to personally welcome each of you to the 6th edition of the Change the World Model United Nations – New York City. The main topic of this year’s conference is Africa with all it’s complexities. The dynamics of the great and unstoppable phenomenon of migration, the respect of human rights, the problem of social inequality, the water supply problems, the right to food, education, health. In these conference days we can and we must tie to the great theme of development, to the theme of moral duty: no one can feel left out. Your energy, your smartness, your fantasy are the levers to move a world that need to be put back into it’s axis. You have, here, within the biggest symbol that keeps the nations together the opportunity to think deeply on the complexities that all representative democracies are now facing. Affirming in the best way possible your participation to the country you are representing as delegates, in reality you will defend the democratic paths that, in your origin countries, you are facing. You have a concrete chance to exalt and to safeguard the rights and duties of democratic participation. You furthermore have the possibility to see things differently. You just have to look round you and see that seated next to you, you will find, friends and colleagues different from you, coming from different continents, from ethnicities, religion and orientation. This is your biggest opportunity to give voice to these differences and to respect the different values. The future is here: in the acceptance and in the respect of the differences, knowing that you need to run to a common goal. For this reason Associazione Diplomatici, through the organization of conferences like this one, inspiring you to talk, to confront, to get united, wants to place education as pivot point of the authentic change. In these years, with nearly 30.000 thousand students from more than 110 different countries we tried to give voice and same rights to all it’s differences. The growing success of your participation (even in this NYC edition that has registered a record in participating students) and the one, of which we are really proud and honoured, of the participation of eminent figures, confirms that this is a success path. We named our worldwide conferences “Change the World” because we really believe that you will be able to change the world. You will spend three days at the United Nations Headquarters: live and make treasure of every single moment, we wish the best for all of you. Future is back! Enjoy CWMUN! Claudio Corbino . Letizia Brichetto Arnaboldi Moratti 2 3 Letter from the President of Future Leader Society Salvatore Carrubba Letter from the Secretary - General of CWMUN Alessandro Dimaiuta Catania, February 10, 2017 Milan, February 21, 2017 I warmly welcome all the participants to the 2017 Change the World Model UN, and I deeply thank them for the trust that once more you have put into this extraordinary initiative. With them I want also to thank their families, the schools and the advisors that facilitate the participation of so many students coming from all over the world. For many months, globalization has been more and more debated. Many people, now, fear globalization and see at it as a way to destroy jobs, identity and sovereignty; this mood explains Brexit and the election of President Trump. But this debate, in these terms, is mainly a North-western debate: the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, just a few weeks ago, praised globalization and open markets as a powerful way to let billions of people go out of poverty. The world, thanks to globalization, today is richer, healthier and more peaceful than ever. Africa is one of the (partial) winners of globalization. It has been considered for many years a lost continent: the German famous philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said even that it was a continent outside the history. Today, Africa is the new history, as the enviable rates of growth in many African countries show. We cannot therefore consider Africa looking only at the conditions of rogue or failed states. These states menace the stability of the Mediterranean area, but Africa doesn’t finish at their borders. The 2016’s edition of the Report about global economy, published every year by Centro Einaudi, an Italian leading thinktank, shows that in the period 2000-2012, the growth in Africa has been stronger than in the rest of the world. When the crisis has slowed this path of growth, the process of modernization didn’t stop: in 2015 the foreign investments in Africa grew of 7%; the experts are still very optimistic, hoping in five elements: • A strong young generation very keen on digital technologies; • Governments ready to invest in infrastructures; • A growing rate of African graduated abroad and ready to come back and begin entrepreneurial activities; • The interest of investors; • A market for digital applications not colonized by foreign sites. In 2015, for the first time, more than half of African leaved under formally democratic regimes; they were just the 28% in 2010. Our duty is to let grow these reasons of hope and these opportunities. First, being convinced that the world is not our world. Impeding to African countries to accede to the good outcomes of globalization should be but a new kind of colonialism: the rich and old countries that close the markets in order to defend their jobs and their richness without considering the impact of such a disastrous decisions on billions of people all over the world. This closeness should be a suicide for us: if Africa could grow at a rate of 6% a year, the migrations to Europe could completely fall. On the other hand, ignoring Africa we will give more and more room to the spreading of forms of new colonialism, coming from Northern and Eastern powerful, ambitious and assertive countries. This requires the necessity of stronger and stronger, more and more innovative kinds of cooperation: without it, every effort to stop migrations from South to North will fatally fail, provoking in our Northern countries more and more aggressiveness, worries, isolationism and populism. We must escape from this vicious circle that risks jeopardizing our democracies. In the next future, it’s up to you looking for new policies that could be able in poor countries to improve the conditions of people, strengthen civil societies and not enrich more and more the treasures of old despots. It’s African hope, it’s our duty. Salvatore Carrubba Dear Honourable Guests, Delegates, Advisors, Staff and Friends, On behalf of the Senior Secretariat and of al the staffers of the 2017 Change the World Model United Nations, I warmly welcome you to New York City. I am really proud and honoured to represent you all as Secretary-General of this conference. The Change the World Model UN is shaped as a complete learning experience through which students acquire knowledge and high level skills put to use in the future, including possession of tools for the understanding of global dynamics and their interpretation, and the ability to relate and build links with the globalized world in which we live in the respect of cultures, political opinions, and value systems other than their own. Our world is confronting a time of many changes and we’re meeting these changes during a time of larger nation-wide and global change. The world of CWMUN is an exciting area in which to learn and grow at the same time, and we’ll continue to meet and bring inspired people together in forums like this, to ensure our Conference remains at the cutting edge. We should all be very proud of where we are today and excited about where we are headed. The CWMUN Secretariat and staff have done their best to give you the most exciting Model UN experience possible. Participating in this conference represents a unique opportunity for all of you. We look forward to hearing constructive debate on the most pressing issues and challenges facing our global community as you expertly represent your Member States. Indeed, understanding issues of such international stature will require a great deal of work and dedication on your part, but together, our different points of view can formulate responses to the challenges discussed. Model UN are all about this, different points of view on the same issues and finding a solution that works for all. Dialogue, ideas, positive leadership, resolutions, tolerance, democracy, legality, and respect: these are the fundamental elements of a Model UN and must certainly be the fundamental aspects of our everyday behaviour. You will all remember this experience as one of the best of your entire life. Being able to reach consensus through negotiation will help you in all your future experiences. As future generation of managers and leaders it is our duty to create and obtain a worldwide improvement and the only way to do so it is to give our 100% in everything we do with loyalty and diligence preferring the interest of the community to our. You’re joining a great team of co-delegates. We have a good range of content and fresh viewpoints that make working together a rich experience.
