CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A.
The Background of the Study
People use language as a means of communication, to express their
ideas, felling and thoughts, either in spoken or written forms. Sometimes,
people use written form of language to convey their ideas, for example, in
novels, short story, movie, etc, which are commonly called literature.
Literature is a word that sometimes some people do not bear in
their mind that they are reading a piece of literary work. It might be because
they do not know what literature is and and if they know, each of them has a
different perception about it.
"literature" is used to describe anything from creative writing to
more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to
refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama,
fiction,and
nonfiction.(http://classiclit.about.com/od/literaryterms/g/aa_whatisliter.htm

The development of audiovisual technology and information media
influences the lifestyle changing of society. Radio television, DVD, VCD
are some examples of electronic which become furniture at housewife.
Those technology media have function as information and intertainment
media. It can entertain people 24 hours up to their needs. It influence
people’s live in recreative and consumptive society, because all program are
presented in entertaining ways.
Is exposure to television entertainment making think or act
differently? Does it change attitudes and shape fellings and reactions?. Most
adult believe television entertainment does not have an important social
influence on them. It is, after all only entertainment. But children are seen as
more susceptible than adults, and concerns about the effects of other media
on childrens social and personality development were voicedlong before the
appeareance of television. In fact, sex and brutal violence were taken out of
comic books and movies by those concerned about children’s social and
moral development.
Even though, all peoples have expected their children grow up and
improve naturally. If the children leave alone to improve as their ability. All
childrens have ability to realize if their able. Parent, family and environment
just pull up to give spirit to advance and strunggle. (Suryani: 2008).

The Qur’an construct the history of Adam by revealing it six times in
Mecca and one time in Medina. Each time it was revealed it presented
new things to attract the reader. It also used different words from the
previous history to discribe the narrative . Besides, history which is
mentioned in detail in previous sura not narrated detail anymore in
next sura and vice verse.

something unclear; life is a test; there is no place for arrogance in
heaven; all humans are one family; humans are responsibility for earth
and are depend to it; Satan knows the weaknesses of humans; Adam
left a formula for representing; Adam did not leave any Sin for his
children; God’s mercy is bigger than His wrath; one of factors why
iblis was banished is his desperation; arrogance and envy make
someone out from belief and bring them into disbelief; human
becomes vicogerent of the presence of low and sense.(Najib,2007)

CHAPTER II
THEORITICAL REVIEW OF THE “FINDING NEMO” MOVIE
In this chapter, the writer would like to discuss about the description of
educational values of the “Finding Nemo” movie.
A. EDUCATION
According to Prof. Drs. S. Brodjonegoro in the book “Pengantar
Ilmu Pendidikan”, there are some understanding of education as seen
through the origin of the words like; Paedagogiek (Ancient Greek) derived
from the word pais that means children and agogos that means guide.
Formerly in ancient greek a child who went to school escorted by a man
who called the gogos. He took the boy, brought his tools and after school
closed, gogos bring children to come home. Gogos in the family give
responsibility to monitoring the child. Therefore paedagogiek means is the
science of guiding children.
According Ducth language, education derives from word
Opvoeding that means "bringing up" with food, so bringing up children in a
physical sense. But gradually "raising action" bears also on the spiritual
growth of children, so the growth of thoughts, feelings and wishes of
children and also his character growth. In a broad sense opvoeding means
measures to raise the child in the sense geestelyk (psychotherapy, java).
Whereas education in the Java language is usually refered to as
panggualwentah means to process, change the mental like strenghten
feeling, thoughts, wishes and character of the child. And the last, in roman
languages (including English), there is a term "educare" which means out
and lead. This term indicates the action to realize the "innerijk aanleg" or
potential child who was born in the time taken. So aducare means "wake up"
or explore the hidden strengths that children have the potential power. So
Suwarno concludes education or educating is a guiding to the human
immature in order to fulfill his own responsibility or a brief guide to
education is a guidance human growth until the achievement of maturity in
the sense of spiritual and physical. (Suwarno, 1982:1-2)
According to Mudyaharjo education is all life situations that affect
individual growth (Hidayat, 2010:29). Indeed education in general can be
understood in two sense: unlimited to broadly-and narrowly-limited. Broad
understanding of education is life. Education is any learning experience that
took place in all environments and as long as the life. This notion implies
that education starts since the human being on earth or even from within the
womb.
B. VALUE
The true value and universally accepted is the value that produces a
behavior, and it is behaviors that have a positive impact for both the run and
for others. (Linda,1997). According to Halstead and Taylor (2000), value is
the principles and fundamental conviction which act as general guides to
behavior the standards by which particular actions are judged as good or
desirable.

values

C. EDUCATION VALUE
Educational values according Sastraprateja are cultivating and
developing the values in a person (Kaswardi, 1993: 03). Education value is
the spirit of education, so wherever they are taught the value of education
will present itself. Educational value is the value of education. (Zaim
Elmubarok, 1998: 12) Educational value never mentioned by ex-minister of
Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, which was then chaired
by Prof. Dr. Nugroho Notosoesanto. He explicitly convey that education
was essentially has two missions at once, the first mission is academic
education and second mission is character education. (Wahjoetomo,1994:
02).
So based on the explanation of the educational value of the above
can also be interpreted that the educational world has experiences changes
towards a more positive, if the first model only as the teaching of science
education, as moral degradation, then education must also be balanced with
educational value. As said by Zakiah Darajad (1984) where education
basically include all actions or efforts of the older generation to transfer
science (transfer of knowledge), skills and experience on the younger
generation, namely the effort to prepare them to meet the functional life ,
either physical or spiritual. So the conclusion from the above explanations
that the educational value is important because it represents the transition
process of the transfer of knowledge to the transformation of values, to
make a child intelligent students who are not only academically but also can
apply the values in everyday life.
And according to Linda, education values are divided into two
groups:
a. Values of Being:

added the meaning of courage is to do something difficult but correct
and is the best option for the long term.
3.
Peaceability
Calm and patient attitude. The tendency to try to accept other
people's opinions rather than denied and opposed it. Understand that
the differences are rarely resolved through conflict, and that the
obstinacy of a person indicates that he has a problem or feel
insecure, and therefore expect your understanding. Willingness to
understand other people's feelings instead of reacting to them
quickly. Emotional control.
4.

development. Attitude is responsible for his own deeds. Overcoming
the tendency to blame others when experiencing difficulties.

and impartially. The ability to balance spontaneity with selfdiscipline.
6.

Understanding the role of marriage and sexuality in it. Awareness
about the consequences of long-term (and extended) that can be
caused by immoral sexual life.

Movie and education have a very close relationship, because now
this movie could become a media that can be used parents to instill the values
of life to them. Positive impact of watching a new movie clearly visible at
children aged three to five years. Because at this age, they capability to read
can be increase by watching a movie (Musbikin, 2007: 80) Movie can be used
as a medium of learning to inculcate good values when parents may be wise
to accompany the child when watching the movie. According Jane Murphy
and Karen Tucker, if parents know how to make use of television to watch the
movie in order to become a medium of education for their children, so parents
can make the movie as a second school for their children who keep it
intelligent and moral. (Musbikin, 2007:80)
But parents should still provide assistance to children when they see
the movie, the parents must inform and give sense to them about behavior
that is in the movie. Establish good communication with your child can
reduce the potential negative effects when watching a movie.
Because the most important education is in a family where the
parents are the people most responsible and moral education of their children.
Because in the family they grow and develop. Allowing children to watch
excessive means allowing growth and development and education of troubled
children.
If movie preparation in the school, the teacher must carefully prepare
suitable or educating movie that will enjoyed in the class. It is Necessary for
the teacher to preview a movie carefully to find motivation for the students,
possibly including the background discussion, and to anticipate and explain
vocabulary and unusual cultural Difficulties points. (Kreidler, 1998:06)
CHAPTER III
CERTAIN ELEMENTS OF THE MOVIE “ FINDING NEMO”
A.
Andrew Stanton Boigraphy
Andrew Stanton full name is Andrew Christopher Stanton Jr. He
was born in December 3, 1965 Rockport, Massachusetts USA. He is an
American film director, screenwriter, producer, and occasional voice actor
based at Pixar Animation Studios. In his childhood, he was interested in
becoming a cartoon-strip author. Later on, those interests shifted and he
pursued animation at the California Institute of the Arts. During his first job
after graduation, he learnt the details of animation. He had always wanted to
be a part of Disney, but he could not land a job with them after a number of
tries. In 1990, Andrew Stanton joined the animation studio Pixar and
became an important contributor to the studio's initial success. His work on
"Light and Heavy" and "Surprise" earned him the interest of top officials at
Pixar. he received a BFA in character animation from the California
Institute of the Arts in 1987 before entering the professional world as an
animator with Kroyer Films in the latter part of the decade. After working
on a number of animated television series, including the legendary Ralph
Bakshi’s “Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures” (CBS, 1987-88), he
became the second animator at a former computer hardware company turned
computer animation company, Pixar Animation Studios. Stanton worked on
the studio’s first film, “Luxo Jr.” (1986), which established the company’s
logo, a hopping desk lamp. The project, which was subsequently nominated
for a Best Animated Short Oscar, helped to establish Pixar as a forwardthinking entity in the increasingly convoluted world of feature animation.
With Stanton’s help, they would become one of the leading lights in the
animation world.
Stanton’s first success with Pixar after “Luxo Jr.” came as the
initial screenwriter for its first feature-length hit, “Toy Story” (1995), which
was produced after the company’s purchase by Walt Disney Studios.
Though the script was eventually re-written by Joss Whedon and Joel
Cohen, among others, he and Pixar chief John Lasseter were responsible for
its core story, which addressed universal themes of friendship and
unconditional love in a classic Hollywood story of mismatched friends. The
combination of mature subject matter – for kid-oriented animation, at least –
rip-roaring adventure and sly, smart humor became Stanton’s trademark at
Pixar, as did his penchant for contributing a vocal cameo to each of his
films. Stanton was also responsible for character design on “Toy Story,”
which won a special Academy Award in 1996; he also shared an Oscar
nomination for his script with Lasseter and its many subsequent
contributors.
The success of “Toy Story” elevated Stanton to co-director for
Pixar’s popular follow-up, “A Bug’s Life” (1998), which he also co-wrote
with Don McEnerny and Bob Shaw. The comedy-drama followed a
storyline similar to that of “Toy Story” – another outcast, this time an ant
with a knack for useless inventions, must partner with other insect misfits to
rescue his colony from a horde of vicious grasshoppers – and performed
heroically at the box office. Clearly, Stanton was ready to assume the mantle
of solo director for Pixar’s next effort, but he remained squarely as co-writer
for its next two features, “Toy Story 2” (1999) and “Monsters, Inc” (2001),
though he also served as executive producer on the latter. However,
Stanton’s ranking as a voice-over artist received a boost – he provided the
doomy tones for astronaut toy Buzz Lightyear’s sworn nemesis, the Evil
Emperor Zurg, in “Toy Story 2.”
The year 2003 found Stanton firmly in the director’s chair with
“Finding Nemo,” which became one of Pixar’s most well-loved pictures to
date. A gentle and moving story at its core about a father’s search for his
missing child, the picture encompassed Stanton’s trademark misfit team-up
in a gaggle of eccentric fish who aid Nemo in returning to his dad, as well as
some of the company’s most stunning visuals. In addition to helming the
film and co-writing its script, Stanton gave voice to one of the film’s most
amusing characters, an addled turtle named Crush who helps direct Nemo
through the Australian current. A massive success in the summer movie
season, “Finding Nemo” brought home an Oscar to Pixar for Best Animated
Film, as well the 2004 Annie and a as a host of state and regional critics’
awards. In 2008, the feature was named 10th on the American Film
Institute’s list of best animated films ever made.
After “Nemo,” Stanton served as executive producer on Pixar’s
Oscar-winning “Ratatouille” (2007), as well as the 2003 documentary short
“Exploring the Reef,” which partnered famed oceanographer Jean-Michael
Cousteau with his “Nemo” heroes Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Dory (Ellen
DeGeneres). He also lent his vocal talents to many of the company’s feature
films, including “The Incredibles” (2004) and “Cars” (2006). But he donned
the director’s cap again in 2008 for “WALL-E,” which was arguably his
finest effort to date.
At once an epic science fiction film about a small but highly
motivated robot whose primary mission – to clean up an abandoned and
polluted Earth – transforms into a planet-wide rebirth, “WALL-E” moved
critics and audiences worldwide with its sweet-natured and silent hero. It
also stood as the benchmark by which all subsequent Pixar projects – and
computer animated features as a whole – could be measured, thanks to its
stunning visuals which approximated the look and feel of live-action
footage to near-perfect degrees. Praised by nearly all major critics and
periodicals, it was among the biggest hits of 2008, and reaped mightily at
the award shows at the end of that year, including the Golden Globe and
Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, as well as placement on the
American Film Institute and National Board of Review’s Top 10 motion
picture lists.
That same year, Stanton announced his next effort as director with
“John Carter of Mars,” an adaptation of the popular Jazz Age science fiction
novels by “Tarzan” creator Edgar Rice Burroughs. The project had been
purchased by Disney in 2007 for Stanton, who announced that he would
return to that company as a “loan” to complete the project for a 2012
release.

12. John Carter of Mars (2012) (writer, director)
The film is based on the first story to feature John Carter, A Princess of
Mars, which was serialised from 1912 and first published as a novel in
1917. Carter is an American Civil War veteran who goes to sleep in a
cave after being chased by Apache Indians and wakes up on Mars, here
called Barsoom. Formerly an Earthlike world, it became less hospitable
to life due to its advanced age: as the oceans evaporated, and the
atmosphere thinned, the planet devolved into partial barbarism with the
inhabitants hardened and warlike, fighting one another to survive.
Barsoomians distribute scarce water supplies via a worldwide system of
canals, controlled by quarreling city-states. The Martian atmosphere is
maintained by a power plant. Carter rescues a humanoid Red Martian
princess, Dejah Thoris, from the belligerent four-armed Green
Martians, whose respect he gains for his superior strength and fighting
ability. He enlists the Green Martians' assistance in winning a civil war,
and saves Mars from destruction when its atmosphere plant
malfunctions.

The Synopsis of Finding Nemo
After the tragedy of shark attack that made him lost his wife, Coral
and his five thausand eggs, Marlin, a clownfish, suffers from a great trauma
about ocean, as a result, he also becomes overprotected father for his son
Nemo, his only son who saved from the tragedy.
In Nemo’s first shcool, actually Marlin has permitted him to joint
with Mr. Ray’s class to travel the sea and gain some knowledge yet, after
knowing that the class would go to “ drop of”, Marlin decided to folow after
Mr. Ray’s class as he freaks out that the degree of ocean might hurt Nemo.
When he gets to the “ drop off” Marlin happens to catch Nemo
separating from the group with his friends; Sheldon, Pearl and Ted, to see
the butt of a boat. Marlin is very madat him that in front of Nemo’s friends,
he tells Nemo to get home and not to get back to shcool until the next one or
two years. He also told him that he is actually too young and can not do
anything.
Feeling embarrassed, sad and angry, instead of doing what his
father said, Nemo disobeyed him by swimming approaching the boat and
tauch it is boat to prove to Marlin how tough he could be. However
unfortunatelly right after he did that a diver came and took him away.
Altough the boat speeds away, Marlin immedatelly takes up a
quest of finding his son in the middle of his rush trying to catch the boat, he
meet Dory, a friendly and talentes fish who suffers from a short-term
memory lost problem. Next together with Dory he travels the whole ocean
trying to find Nemo.
As they search the open ocean, they experience such challenging
adventures. First, they escape from the captures of three gigantic sharks by
blowing them up. Next, they swim thousands of feets and get chased by a
monster with huge teeth. They fight with the demon and win after tying him
with a mask. Later, they get to the battle of jellyfish forest and riding with a
bunch of sea turtles on the aeast Australian current. Yet, their adventure
does not stop at that point. They get trap in the body of a whale and almost
become lunch for a pelican.
Meanwhile, far for his father, Nemo also experiences not less
adventorous days than Marlin and Dory. Nemo is placed in a tank, togather
with other fishes, which later on, became Nemo’s best friends. They are
Gill, Bloat, Gurgle, Peach, Bubbles, Jacques And Deb. Besides the fish,
Nemo also gets a bird friend, Nigel. He is a pelican who likes to visit the
fish.
Afterward, it turns out that his captor, who is a dentist, has
prepared Nemo to be a present for his niece, Darla. All the fishes in the tank
know that Darla is a naughty girl who likes to shake plastic with a fish in it.
Since then, all of them decide to help Nemo to escape from the tank before
the day that Darla comes. It is here then. Where Nemo’s adventure begins.
Togather with the tank hood, the name that they were created to
call the brotherhood and friendship among the fish in the tank, all the fishes
work the escape strategies. That have planned by Gill. The plan is that
Nemo has to get in the filter channel and take a pebble inside to jum the
gear, if he can do that, the tank will get filthier and filthier by minute and the
dentist will have to ocean the tank. When he does, each fish will be put in
the individual bag. At the time, they will roll themselves clown to the
counter, out of the window accross the streets and into the harbour. Then
finally, they can get back to the ocean.
Unfortunatelly, the escape plan that has been plotted carefully is
not successed and Nemo ever almost get killed for he almost gets stirred by
the gear. Since then the thank-hood is afraid triying to escape again. They
almost give up. Until Nigel suddenly comes to visit and tells the news about
Marlin and Dory who keep swimming the entire ocean to find Nemo. The
news about Marlin has spirited Nemo up. Without other fishes companion
he retries the escape plan again and he can make it. He is able to insert a
pebble in the gear and soon the tank become dirty.
However it is sad to know that the plan can not work as they wish
since the dentist not cleaning the tank by him self but with the help of “
Aqua Scum 2003”, a self cleaning maintenance free salt water for while
they are getting panic with the unsuccesed plan. Darla is coming.
Nevertheles, finally with the spirit of togatherness, the tank-hood could help
Nemo to escape from Darla and sent him to harbour to meet his father. And
that more proudly is Nemo can and brave to helping fishes that catch by
fisherman.
From this movie we can take some value about affective from
parents to his son, do not ever give limitation our childrens to learn about
anythings, the experience is better teacher.

There are two types of characterization That are descriptive
and dramatic methods, descriptive methods and is Generally the Easier to
understand, but summed up characters tend to seem a little lifeless. And
dramatic is the modern method of the interior monolouge device, or
stream-of-consciousness, in Which allthat Is the flow of impressions and
thoughts passing through Some character's mind from moment to
moment. (Little, 1970: 91)
In this movie the author uses the descriptive method.
Following example shows the will of the author in characterizing the
Marlin That try to protect his wife and eggs from shark attacks.
Marlin
: Coral, get inside the house. No, Coral, do not. They'll be
fine.Just get inside ... You,right now.

: No!
Marlin
: Coral! coral
Marlin
: Coral! Oh!
Marlin
: There, there, there.It 's OK. Daddy's here.Daddy 's got
you.I promise, as I Will never let anything Happen to you ... Nemo.

as a person who have a great responsibility and great affection to his
family, he said if he promise to save Nemo from anything whatever will
happens.

The theme of a work of literature is as we have seen, what it
has to say-it `s basic subject. Our view of the theme of a work as a whole

style and placement of an item of description on the first page, the
handling of a minor character or episode in the middle, the particular
language, meaning and feeling of last sentence. (Little, 1970: 12). The
