People often ask, “What’s the year been like at Second Harvest?” They ask if food donations are down or if
need has increased. Although it seems a simple answer, fighting hunger is more complex.
Each and every day we load our trucks with food destined for our non-profit program partners and people
in need. We travel thousands of miles from Ely to Moose Lake and from Hibbing all the way over to Hurley,
WI. The result - millions of pounds of food distributed and thousands of people fed. But is it enough? Are
we having impact?
We know from sheer statistics that distributing enough food for nearly 3.9 million meals is compelling. Our
challenge has and will continue to be to look at our work and ensure it is meeting the need of our region
long-term.
What challenges me personally are the questions, “Are we reaching the highest need areas of our NE
Minnesota and NW Wisconsin service region? How do we reach our aging population whose food
accessibility might be limited? And, are we doing enough to have impact on child hood hunger?”
As we roll into the new year we will explore answers to these questions. We will challenge ourselves with the
complex issue that is hunger. And, thanks to your support we will continue to impact and feed those who
are most in need of our food.

We are...
The sole distributor of nationally and regionally donated food to over
120 charitable feeding programs including our region’s soup
kitchens, food shelves and shelters and approximately 47,000 people
in need. As a non-profit food bank our primary role is to provide food
to the front-line charitable agencies that offer meals to the hungry.
However, we do provide food directly to over 3,300 people per month
as part of our own direct service programming.
Our Mission...
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s mission is to feed
Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin’s hungry by
rescuing and distributing food and engaging our region in the fight
against hunger.
BackPack Programs Feed Children in Need
For some Northland children, school is the only place to eat
a regular meal. They dread weekends, school vacations and
snow days when school isn’t in session and they can’t rely on
their school meals. Teachers see it every day in hundreds of
classrooms throughout our region.
Mary Bakken, a kindergarten teacher at Washington
Elementary School in Cloquet shared, “I hand out a scoop of
cereal to my kindergarten children each day as a snack. I
noticed a little boy wasn’t eating his and when I asked him
why, he told me he wanted to take it home so he and his
brother could have it for dinner.”
It’s an alarming statistics but 1 out of every 5 Northland
children suffers from food insecurity*. What’s more, child
food insecurity is higher here in the eight counties served by
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank than the state
averages.
The BackPack Program is a program that you’ve made
possible to feed children in need. It’s a program of
Feeding America™, our national affiliate, which supplies food
to children in need on weekends and when school isn’t in
session. Nationally over 5,000 BackPack Programs exist,
feeding over 250,000 children annually.
The concept is simple. With your support, we secure easyto-open, easy-to-prepare individual or small serving size food
items like cereal, shelf-stable milk, entrees or soup, fruits,
vegetables, and snacks like granola bars. Volunteers like you
pack the items into simple non-descript bags and we deliver
them to designated locations (schools or temporary holding
facilities).
School staff identify students who may be in need of the
food. Information about the free program is sent home and
children are easily enrolled. Once bags arrive at school, food
is delivered to classrooms where it’s placed in a child’s
backpack or book bag on the last day of the week, just before
the start of the weekend.
Rachel Howard, a social worker with Two Harbors Public
Schools was handing out backpack food recently when a child
asked, “Is my food in my backpack or do I need to check?”
She assured him it was in his bag and that he didn’t need to
worry. He said, “Good, I love having food at home.”
In addition to your generosity, we partner with the United Way
of Greater Duluth, Carlton County and Superior/Douglas
County; regional foundations, businesses and social/religious
organizations as well as the Duluth, Hermantown, Cloquet,
Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Superior/Douglas County
School Districts, providing nearly 700 bags of food to children
each week.

Project Joy would like to thank those who attended and supported our event.
Your support will allow us to provide backpacks filled with meals for kids on weekends
Project Joy was started to honor the legacy of Patrick Plys, a business man and community leader who strived to make a difference in our
region. Patrick lost his battle with cancer in January 2012 and his wife Laura, his children, family and friends developed Project Joy as a way
to carry on his legacy and give back to the community in Patrick’s honor.
The name Project Joy came about when Patrick, recovering from a stroke, was in the hospital and unable to speak. He signaled for a piece
of paper and wrote down the phrase, “I choose joy.” Laura, his wife, shares that during his battle he made the decision to choose joy over
sadness which in essence started their movement to create joy in the lives of others.
One of the Project Joy events is a fun, family-friendly evening at the Curling Club in November which includes: appetizers, desserts, coffee
bar, silent auction, cash bar, entertainment, photo booth, wine wall and much more. The 2nd Annual Project Joy event was held on
November 22, 2013 and raised $13,356 for the BackPack Program.
Prior to this Project Joy event, Patrick was posthumously inducted into the City of Duluth’s Hall of Fame with his portrait unveiling on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, Duluth’s City Hall. Pictured (above center) is Patrick’s wife Laura, children, grandchild and Mayor Don Ness.
