AUBURN STUDIO PROJECT The Auburn Studio Project, hosted by the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department, the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will be held Monday, Feb. 13 at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. This program strives to connect 7th grade students with different local and area artists. This year’s project will feature the work of Atlanta-based artist Jiha Moon. Born in Korea, Moon blends her own culture into typically Western ideologies to create a unique array of works. Her art focuses on elements of pop culture, such as Angry Birds and Emojis, and is influenced by technology, racial perceptions and folklore. Students who participate in this year’s project will get to tour Moon’s exhibition, and take three workshops, including a norigae project, a mixed-media pop culture collage and a fortune cookie craft project inspired by the works of Moon. For additional information, or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact Cari Cleckler, Art Education Specialist, at 334-501-2944, or by email at [email protected]. PAGE 2 ART CONNECTION WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH The Auburn Arts Association (AAA) is currently displaying their Winter Invitational Art Exhibition in the gallery showroom at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. Also, thanks to everyone who came to and helped with the Polar Express Holiday Celebration. There were over 500 guests in attendance! UPCOMING AACT PRODUCTIONS “Cheaper By the Dozen” The Young Performers of Auburn Area Community Theatre will present “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Suppose you’re an attractive high school girl and you’re not only a member of a large and unique family but your father is, in fact, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency. Then suppose he decides to apply his unorthodox methods to you and to the rest of your big family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and it must be admitted extremely effective! Audiences of all ages will laugh and be touched by this story. $10/adults, $8/students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased and reservations made at auburnact.org. Ticket info line: 334-332-0881. Performances are March 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday matinees March 4 and 11 at 2:00 p.m. Monty Python’s “Spamalot” The Auburn Area Community Theatre (AACT) presents “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” Carnivorous rabbits, flying cows and dancing knights. The musical parody of King Arthur’s tales features plenty of male roles, lots of snow girls, and an astounding female “diva” lead. Come out and “find your grail.” Auditions will be held May 9, 11 and 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. ART CONNECTION PAGE 3 Director Spotlight: Richard Trammell Richard, director of AACT’s Cheaper by the Dozen, is from Lanett, AL, and a graduate of Auburn University. He fell in love with theatre after being in the College of Science and Mathematics for three years. It presented him with a different way of thinking critically about the world and his community. He dropped his chemistry major, and declared a theatre major at the precipice of his senior year. After being cast in a couple of shows, he became an inaugural member of the Mosaic Theatre Company, a company that fosters dialogue about diversity on the campus of Auburn University and in the community. This is where he found his love of teaching, facilitating and directing. “Directing is magical and it gives you the ability to make magic in a shared creative space. It is cathartic, there are characters and circumstances that you can relate to which allow for introspection; a self-examination of your life, emotions and decisions. You are able to help create a world in which the audience can live, explore and seek, along with the actors, the truth and what our truths are.” Cityfest 2017 Applications Out Now!
