Center for Student Affairs
To students who wish to apply for scholarships
This brochure is intended to introduce and explain the details of scholarship
program to help students who wish to apply for scholarships in their selection of
the most appropriate scholarship. Please read the brochure thoroughly; we provide
this information as a starting point for using the scholarship program effectively.
The first duty of students is to devote themselves to active and voluntary studies
and research, then to engage in experiences as in extracurricular activities that
offer opportunities for personal development and growth. However, there are risks
of facing unexpected family circumstances or other unusual occurrences that may
cause drastic changes in financial and social situations. Shoud such circumstances
occur, you can rely on the scholarship programs to support you in your academic
pursuit.
Sophia University offers various scholarship programs.
This brochure will help
you find the appropriate scholarship, but if you have any inquiries or need
additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at the Center for
Student Affairs, Section for Financial Support (1st. Floor, Bldg. 2)
We hope that the scholarship programs will be used to support as many students
as possible to help them lead a successful rewarding campus life.

Introduction
Aim of the Scholarship System
The aim of the scholarship system is to provide partial donations or loans for the
tuition fees of students who are experiencing financial hardship that makes it difficult to
continue their studies despite tremendous motivation, to enable these students to devote
more time to their studies and go about their university life without worry.
Applying for Scholarships
Each scholarship has its own criteria for application and selection, and numbers of
recipients are limited, so there may be cases in which students are not accepted, despite
meeting all the criteria.
Before applying for a scholarship, please consider your living conditions carefully,
discuss it thoroughly with your family and think carefully about which scholarship to
apply for.
(3)
‒
(4)
‒
(5)
Application Preparation‒
Scholarships must be applied for by the student him/herself, and the grant or loan will
not be awarded to anybody else. Students must consider their financial situation
carefully before applying, and must prepare all necessary documents. Students will be
asked detailed questions about their family and financial circumstances at the interview
and vague answers will not be accepted, so please speak to your family beforehand so
that you can provide accurate information.
If your Family’s Financial Situation Suddenly Changes ‒
If the main earner in your family loses his/her job or passes away, or if a disaster or
some other circumstance causes a sudden change in your family’s finances, making it
extremely difficult to continue your studies, you can speak to the Center for Student
Affairs at any time.
Selection Criteria‒
With the exception of Sophia University Academic Excellence Awards and some Sophia
University Benefactors’ Scholarships, the criteria for selection are financial hardship and
good academic performance, with a particular focus on financial hardship.
In terms of the level of financial hardship, based on data up till last year in the case of
JASSO Scholarship Loan Program, it is unlikely, unless there are special circumstances,
for students to be selected as recipients if the annual income of the family is greater than
¥15 million before tax, though this varies depending on the number of family and the
scholarship type. Students are also unlikely to be selected for Sophia Tuition Support
Scholarships if their family’s annual income exceeds ¥7 million or if their family has
business income exceeding ¥4 million(It depends on each family’s situation).
In terms of academic performance, there are cases in which students whose grades do
not meet a certain standard will not be selected regardless of the level of financial
hardship. It is hoped that Sophia University’s scholarships will lead to an improvement
in recipients’ grades.

5. External Scholarships for Japanese Students (Regional Public and Private
Organizations)
There are external scholarships provided by private organizations such as foundations and
businesses. These are handled by the Center for Student Affairs. Payments or loans,
application process, target students, selection criteria, number of scholarships/loans and the
amount awarded differ depending on the organization. For most of them, the university
recommends students; however, these students will not necessarily pass the organization’s
selection process and go on to win a scholarship.
Students awarded an external scholarship must consider themselves representatives of
Sophia University and behave accordingly, and work even harder at their studies.
These scholarships do not come with conditions that restrict course options.
In the case of university-recommended scholarships, students who are currently being
recommended for one scholarship cannot as a rule be recommended for another.
<Application Process>
University-Recommended – the university takes applications and selects candidates to
nominate to the organization.
University-Coordinated – students submit applications to the organization through the
university. (Forms can be found at the Center for Student Affairs.)
Direct Application – students submit applications directly to the organization. (Forms can
be found at the Center for Student Affairs.)
<Selection Criteria>
Selection criteria and conditions differ according to the organization, so for details please
check the information posted by the relevant organization.
<List of Scholarships from Regional Public and Private Organizations>
If you apply to external scholarships provided by private organizations, you have to be able
to read or write in Japanese. Please consult the Center for Student Affairs or refer to
“Sophia University Scholarship Information 2016” (Japanese version).
6. Scholarships for Study Abroad
Scholarships for study abroad are administered by the Center for Global Discovery located on
the first floor of the building 2. Eligibility and conditions vary depending on the scholarship.
For details of each scholarship, please contact the Center for Global Discovery.

8. External Scholarships (Offered by Private Organizations)
∝ Applications for scholarships from private organizations such as foundations and
businesses are handled by the Center for Student Affairs.
∝ Conditions such as application procedures, target students, selection criteria, number of
recipients and amounts vary depending on the organization.
∝ In the case of scholarships for which the university recommends students, students
recommended by the university may not necessarily win a scholarship.
∝ In the case of scholarships for which the university recommends students, as a rule the
university does not recommend students already recommended for another scholarship.
∝ Students selected for external scholarships are expected to consider themselves
representatives of Sophia University and behave in a suitable manner for a scholarship
recipient and work even harder at their studies.
∝ Long essay scholarships do not come with conditions that restrict course options.
<Application Types>
