TAKING EDUCATION TO THE PEOPLE

TRANSFERS
To improve services to its customers NAMCOL
has added eLearning to its programme
offerings with the production of radio,
video, web-based lessons. E-learning has
been offered for some time now but has
now expanded with the addition of the
on-line Certificate in Early Childhood and
Development programme (CECD).
This programme is now available on the
NAMCOL E-Learning portal which is hosted
TAKING EDUCATION TO THE PEOPLE
on the Moodle Learning Management
System (LMS) at www.namcoloer.edu.na.
Tutors would also focus on how to do on-line
facilitation.
The development of this exciting programme
started in 2014 and is now ready for
piloting. The pilot started in March 2016
and end in June 2017 on completion of the
CECD course.
But why CECD on-line? “It is an addition
to the print-based materials that the
students are currently using. It’s add-on to
the course, meaning that students will get
extra assistance compared to other students
who are only focusing on print”, according
Alexia Nakaziko, NAMCOL’s Programme
Developer for eLearning for Tertiary
Programmes. The aim is for CECD to be
offered in a blended mode – both on-line
and face-to-face interaction.
For the pilot phase 30 students were identified
and selected based on their computer literacy
skills, academic performance in grade 12
as well as their eagerness to do the course
on-line. Each of the pilot students received a
NAMCOL-owned tablet, fully equipped for
online use. For the pilot phase, seven tutors
have been appointed who will be responsible
for the on-line tutoring of the CECD on-line
modules. The pilot kicked off with the training
of both tutors and students for the use of the
tablets as well as how to access and navigate
through the entire course on their tablets.
It should be noted that only students who
have registered for CECD will automatically
have access to the on-line course. This pilot
programme will run for a period of 18
months starting March 2016. It’s only after
the conclusion of the pilot phase that new
enrolments will be permitted.

NAMCOL Rewards Best 2015 Achievers
N
AMCOL recently handed over various prizes to the institution’s best
learners at a colourful ceremony, attended by parents and friends of the
recipients. The deputy minister of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture,
Anna Nghipondoka, graced the event as the keynote speaker. The deputy
minister told the learners that even though they faced many challenges, this is
not the end of the journey. She further said learners have to run their own race
because no one will do that for them.
The learners were told to adopt a positive attitude towards life as they face
many challenges. The deputy minister further said life is about strategy.
Learners should strategise. She also reminded the parents that they should be
part of the process of education by giving love, care and meet the demands of
their children`s needs. “We should all be partners in the process of educating
the young generation who future leaders of the country and NAMCOL being
part of that process is not an island in itself but is part of the ministry of
education, arts and culture”.
Nghipondoka also gave a special word of thanks to the 16 event sponsors
who contributed financially, saying this shows that it is a joint responsibility to
educate the nation. The director of NAMCOL, Heroldt Murangi, also thanked
the sponsors and said that some of them have been on board with sponsorships
since the start of this initiative five years ago and told them to feel at home
at the ‘people’s college and their contribution will help the institution to fulfil
its mandate. He also asked the media for support in sharing the learners
She was awarded N$10 000 in prize money and in addition received a
scholarship from NAMCOL covering her 1st year registration and tuition fees
at any tertiary education institution, the maximum amount for this is N$30 000.
Victoria said one can fall and still rise and that requires both hard work and
determination.
Her advice to other learners is to listen in class, do homework and study
throughout the year and not to wait until the last minute to catch-up.
achievements with rest of the nation. The prize money was handed over for
achievements in different subject categories, at the JSC and NSSCO level,
ranged from N$600 to a whopping N$10 000.
Ariane Viegas one of the recipients, received N$7000.00 for obtaining an “A”
symbol in both history and entrepreneurship. Ariane said that hard work and
motivation does pay in the end and therefore one should not under-estimate
him or herself. The young grade 11 learner at Jan Mohr High School said those
two subjects were not her first choice, but after registering late at NAMCOL
she opted to enroll for History and Entrepreneurship instead, this meant she
had to work very hard to achieve these results. Ariane thanked her mother for
always being with her and being very supportive. When questioned on what
she would do with the N$7000 she said she would invest it in her education by
buying some of the books her parents could not afford. Her parents Elizabeth
Ferreira and Luis Ribeiro who attended the event, said they were proud and
delighted by their child’s achievement and thanked both NAMCOL and the
sponsors. She looks forward to studying Economics after completing grade 12.
Victoria who is now doing a 4 Bachelor degree in Biomedical Sciences, at
Namibia University of Science and Technology, said she is saving the N$10
000 for a rainy day.
She said that she was excited and proud of herself and thanked her parents
and her sister Fiina Shuuya for never giving up on her and always being
supportive. She was very appreciative of the support from the sponsors
and above all the scholarship from NAMCOL.
NAMCOL could not have awarded all the best achievers without your generous sponsorships. Your contributions have touched the
lives of many. Your generosity is humbling and inspiring.
tells it all
