Enrolment Information
Happy New Year, Everybody!!
Enrolment Day for 2016 is 9.30 am-12.30 pm on
Wednesday 13 January at the Gawler Sport &
Community Centre. Please make every effort to
attend, as this gives members an opportunity to
discuss activities with leaders and to meet up
with friends from last year’s groups. Tea, coffee
and biscuits will be provided.
What does 2016 hold in store for you and
Gawler U3A, I wonder?
Personally, because I've gained so much from
our activities, I've actually increased my U3A
load. I enrolled in a further four subjects in
Adelaide U3A in addition to what I'll be doing
here until March.
The challenge down there will be exciting and
different. Tight timetables, full classrooms and
no parking!
Count your blessings, Gawler!
Sooo.... how did you challenge yourself for this
year?
Did you enrol in an extra subject, perhaps
outside your comfort zone?
Did you decide to offer some additional support
to an activity, or to a member having difficulties
attending, etc, etc?
Perhaps you've decided to "step up" and offer
your services as a leader, or to a new direction
or to the Committee? I must in this vein point
out the wonderful example of the GURUS this
year. Leaders Richard and Margaret Ashley,
themselves secondees, were relocating, but
Diane McGough and Howard Pratt stepped into
the breach because the need was there. Well
done!
Whatever you do or don't do ... it will
determine the future of OUR U3A.
I hope you share my pride and love for our
wonderful organisation.
Enjoy your year!
Peter
Invoices for 2016 membership fees have been
sent to all existing members. This provides an
option to enrol by direct debit or by sending a
cheque to the Treasurer before the start of
Term 1. If you are enrolling by direct debit,
please ensure the banking details are correct
and your name or invoice number is recorded
on the payment advice.
Committee Update
The Gawler U3A committee has successfully
won a grant from U3A South Australia to
establish a website for Gawler U3A.
Consultation with a website developer has
commenced and it is anticipated to have the
website operating by Term 2.
The committee has also applied for funds to
purchase a large screen TV, which the Town
of Gawler Council has agreed can be installed
on a wall at the Sports and Recreation Centre.
This facility will enable courses that use DVDs
to have improved viewing and the potential
for a film group to be established.

Christmas party? Contact Judith at

Oh, what a day it was; oh, what a day!!
Welcome to the programme of
theatre productions for 2016.
We were well rehearsed, happy and optimistic,
and then like a storm it hit...
Not enough room, dancing on carpet, memory
blanks and continual music problems – but what
a happy event!
We hope it will encourage new members to join
us each Tuesday afternoon at 2.00 pm in the
pavilion. No previous experience needed.
Learning the dance routines brings memory
enhancement
together
with
exercise,
friendship and a lot of laughs! Come along and
try it.
We all wish you a very happy and healthy New
Year.

Writing Yourself
a course in creative writing with workshops
We are pleased to announce a new writing course in our programme for Term 1, 2016.
Writing Yourself will initially run for ten weeks at the Gawler Sport and Community Centre. The first
session on Friday 5 February from 10 am-2 pm will be a non-obligatory Come and Try introduction.
Sessions 2 to 10 will be held on Fridays 12 February to 15 April from 10 am-1 pm.
Writing Yourself is open to anyone interested in writing, at
any stage from beginner through to advanced writing
participants—and is open to all age groups. The course will
cover most writing genres [Poetry, Writing for Children, Prose,
Drama, Food and Wine Writing, etc] and a host of workshop
activities. Jeff Guess is a very experienced teacher of English
in country and metropolitan secondary schools, he has taught
‘Writing Poetry’ at the Adelaide Institute of TAFE, and tutored
at the University of South Australia in Creative Writing. His first
book Leaving Maps appeared in 1984 and was hailed by
Judith Rodriguez in The Sydney Morning Herald as ‘a major
collection’. Since then eleven collections have been published,
the latest being Autumn in Cantabile. Jeff has written three
textbooks on teaching poetry and edited a number of poetry
anthologies. He has won numerous prizes for his poetry and
been awarded five writing grants.
Jeff Guess is the greatest living South Australian poet.
Bravo!
Peter Goers - Sunday Mail
Jeff Guess by George Aldridge
Jeff Guess’ name sings contemplative whimsy - but his poetry
cuts to the chase. Succinct and sweet, he taps the timeless nerve
of human universality while telling our culture’s tales with
infinite grace. Methinks he is the finest living Australian poet.
