Breaking news from the LRC The Learning Resource Center invites everyone to check out the America's Newspaper database in the Electronic Resources area of the LRC's web page. On Aug. 31, a new search engine went “live” for the America's Newspaper databases. “It's a great way to find articles in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, regional Illinois newspapers and the New York Times,” said LRC employee Barbara Loudy. “This new search engine will provide many immediate benefits to the user. “Patrons will immediately notice that searches are faster and the results are unlimited. For example, there is now an option to view results according to publication date. An additional popular feature of the search engine is smart stemming, which automatically includes the plural forms of words in searches. This increases the patrons' odds of locating the articles they are looking for. In addition you will find better relevance rankings, which means the database will do a great job of putting the 'best matches first.'” The America's Newspaper database is found by going to www.kcc.edu, then choose Library from the quick links. On the LRC's main page, choose Electronic Resources, then choose America's Newspapers: Illinois on Newsbank. For the direct link, click here. KCC offers enrollment to those who relocated due to hurricane College students who have relocated to this area due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina are being offered an open invitation to enroll at KCC. “KCC will assist those who have had their education interrupted by this devastating hurricane,” said Jerry Weber. “We sympathize with the plight of students whose colleges or universities closed due to the storm disaster. Whenever possible, we will ensure that students relocating to this area are able to continue their studies.” College advisers will enroll students and then assist them in securing federal financial aid and other resources while they attend classes. Although the fall semester has begun, the displaced students from the Gulf region can still enroll if they were taking equivalent classes. Students also can choose to enroll in KCC's late starting classes, consisting of more than 40 courses which begin later this month and early October, or they can prepare to enroll for the Spring 2006 semester. Students who would like more information about this enrollment option can phone the Student Services Department at 8028500.
