Antonyms and Synonyms
Tic-Tac-Toe
Purpose: Students will be able to identify antonyms and synonyms while
learning the meaning of new words.
Standards: The student will be able to:
 identify and use antonyms and synonyms
 use context to determine the relevant meaning of unfamiliar words
Materials: Student activity page for each student
Procedures: Students will try to determine the meaning of the word in the
box above the tic-tac-toe grids. If the word is too difficult, they will find
words inside the grids they know and see if they can make a tic-tac-toe with
the known words. If so, they will circle words that are synonyms of the word
in the box and place an X on any words that are antonyms. Only synonyms
make tic-tac-toe patterns therefore the words that make a tic-tac-toe pattern
are synonyms to the word above and the words with an X are antonyms.

with synonyms. The line can go across, down or diagonal. If you do not know the meaning of the word in the
