AUDITION INFORMATION
AUDITIONS: Saturday, January 28th, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, singing (*sign up for 5 minute slot)
CALLBACKS: Sunday, January 29th, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM, youth callbacks (dance, read, sing)
Sunday, January 29th, 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, adult callbacks (read, dance, sing)
Sign up for a 5 minute time slot for the Saturday singing auditions. Sign up sheet is available in the
Playhouse lobby at the Depot or call the office for assistance (218) 733-7555

Auditions will be held at the Playhouse Conservatory
(230 West Superior Street – entrance on 3rd Ave W between Superior and Michigan St)

Bring a picture and resume. Sample picture resumes are available on our website
(www.duluthplayhouse.org under ‘Auditions’ tab).

The Duluth Playhouse auditions are open to all actors and actresses, including those who may be
auditioning for the first time and professional or Equity actors and actresses.
WHAT TO PREPARE
Please read the script if you are interested in a role. Scripts are available for rent ($5.00 deposit for
3-day rental) at the Playhouse Administrative Office in the main lobby of the Depot.
For the singing audition on Saturday, January 28th, please prepare 16 bars (about 30 seconds) of a
musical theater song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music
in the correct key.
For callbacks on Sunday, January 29th, Come prepared to dance- (tap and ballet) and be prepared to
read from the script if requested by Director.
Rehearsal and Performance Information
Rehearsals begin the week of May 22nd, Mondays – Friday, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM. No rehearsal July 4th or
Memorial Day. Children will be released from rehearsal as early as possible until July 3rd at which point they
will be required to stay until 10:00 PM.
Performance Dates: July 13-30, 2017 | Wednesdays – Saturdays, 7:30pm | Sundays, 2:00pm
Synopsis and Character Breakdown
Synopsis
Set in a northern English mining town against the background of the 1984 miners' strike, Billy Elliot is the
inspirational story of a young boy's struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Follow Billy's
journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, where he discovers a passion for dance that
inspires his family and community... and changes his life forever.
Character Breakdown
The roles of Billy Elliot and Michael have been cast.
Dad
Billy's stoic father. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike, he is still
deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Billy's dancing initially sends him into a rage but he learns to support
his son.

Tony
Billy's brother. A lazy but passionate miner. Hotheaded and scrappy with seemingly no regard or respect for his
father, although he shares his disapproval of dance.

Mrs. Wilkinson
The local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. Hardened and mouthy, she actually has
capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. Believes in the power of personal expression through dance.

Debbie Wilkinson/Ballerina
The ballet teacher's daughter. A bit stand-offish and argumentative, her childhood crush on Billy leads her to
constantly discourage him.

Billy's eccentric grandmother. She is forgetful and a little aloof. Despite her inattention, she harbors a bitter
resentment towards her dead abusive husband but has found solace through dance.

Gets in a fight with Billy. Doubles as boy at the Royal Ballet.
