READING Galileo Galilei Galileo Galilei, born in 1564, was an Italian mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy, to a noble family, and studied thoroughly at the University of Pisa between the years of 1581 and 1585. While in university, Galileo did extensive experiments with pendulums. He documented these in his book called, "De Motu". Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Padua in 1592. In 1593, Galileo invented the thermometer. Some of his many other inventions included a revolutionary water pump and a hydrostatic balance, which was a device that weighed things accurately in either air or water. In 1609, after hearing about Hans Lippershey's newly-invented telescope, Galileo was the first person to use a telescope to observe the skies. From the simplest model, he constructed a much superior model. With this telescope, Galileo discovered the rings of Saturn and was the first person to see the four major moons of Jupiter. He also discovered the different phases of Venus, studied sunspots, and discovered many other important phenomena. As a professor, Galileo had to teach the accepted theory of his time that the Sun and all the planets orbit the Earth. Later, he was exposed to Nicolaus Copernicus’s theory. The theory explains that the Earth and all the other planets orbit the Sun. Galileo's observations with his new telescope persuaded him to accept this new theory, the heliocentric theory. In 1610, Galileo moved to Florence, where he pursued his research on this new theory at the University of Florence. There, he confirmed the heliocentric theory, which is also called the Copernican system. After his many discoveries with his telescope, Galileo was charged with heresy - he was accused of being against the beliefs and teachings of the church. The church preferred to believe that the Earth was at the center of the universe. The Inquisition, which was an institution run by the Catholic church, didn’t support Galileo’s model of the solar system and found Galileo guilty of heresy. In 1633, Galileo was put under house arrest for life; that is, he couldn’t leave his house at any time. Galileo died at his home near Florence in 1642. A.
