(It is obviously not easy for Adrian to forget Withyham and he has sent me three articles on prayer to fill the space which used to be occupied by his learned and interesting articles “From the Rectory”. This is the first. The other two could possibly appear in the November and Dec/Jan issues.) PRAYER AT EVENSONG O GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. (BCP The Second Collect of Evening Prayer) Evensong on a late summer evening. We are lucky these days to have a choir to sing the office. After a hymn, the congregation settles to the rhythm of the Prayer Book. “We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our sinful hearts... we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done.” Later, the Second Collect reminds us that without God’s grace our hearts are wayward, our deeds fall short: “O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed”. The prayer is ancient, its Latin origin earlier than the 8th century. Our medieval ancestors in their private devotions used the Middle English version: “God, of whom ben hooli desiris, right councels and iust werkis...” (14th century Primer). Parson Richard Graye, my Tudor predecessor, would have been familiar with the Latin, “Deus, a quo sancta desideria, recta consilia, et iusta sunt opera..”, but like his generation of clergy he had to switch to the English of Cranmer’s Prayer Book. But what of us this evening, as we make those words our own? Instinctively, we know, that our desires this day have been less than holy and our intentions, though not entirely dishonourable, have not been pure. As for our works: have they been just? Well, perhaps – if you can dignify cooking lunch or mowing the lawn in such lofty terms. However, that is just what St Benedict would have us do: sanctify the commonplace. The Prayer Book is redolent of his spirituality. And it is what George Herbert meant in his hymn we sang earlier: “Teach me, my God and King, in all things thee to see; and what I do in anything, to do it as for thee.” “Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give.” Jesus told his disciples on the eve of his arrest, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” The world’s peace is a truce, a cessation. Christ’s peace is different. He also said, “I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Old Simeon knew this when he told Mary that a sword would pierce her soul. “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.” In our congregation this Sunday evening there is not a man or woman who has not felt that sword. May they be defended from the fear that kills? May they find their rest and quietness in Christ. Adrian Leak. This article first appeared in the Church Times (www.churchtimes.co.uk). 3. Churchwardens Notes - October 2013. The Gerini Paintings, (Episode 283): I had hoped, - hope springing eternal etc. – to be able to announce the triumphal arrival of the remaining money in our bank account. However, the saga continues. Various people have given various reasons for the non-arrival, the problem being, none of the reasons are the same. Anne Barker and I continue to plug away. Sotheby's continue to apologise and a bank somewhere continues to earn interest on our money! The Interregnum: Two applicants have been interviewed, one chosen and he has accepted. That, I am afraid, is all I am allowed to say. Various checks now have to be carried out and the successful applicant has to arrange his departure from whence he will come. Sorry to be so cryptic, but procedure has to be followed. The Quinquennial: The report was discussed at the last PCC meeting. The list of items needing fairly urgent attention is long, but some of the items are minor. A sub-group will prioritise, (horrible word, I know, but succinct), the list and prepare a schedule of works for consideration for the next PCC meeting. Chichester: The choir will be singing at Evensong, on the 30th October. This is an event for which they practice long and hard. I know the trip to Chichester is a bit of a journey, but Chichester is a lovely town and there is a coach going (see Magazine). I urge you to attend if at all possible. The music, singing and setting is superb. Magazine Distribution: We would welcome a volunteer to organise the distribution of the Parish Magazine. It is only a couple of hours a month and it would ensure that the task of running the various church activities does not continually fall on the shoulders of the normal suspects. WITHYHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY October 2013 By the time you read this we will have had our Autumn Show, I am hoping that it will be as successful as last year and that we had a nice day for it. Our next event will be the AGM which will be starting at 7pm on Friday the 1st November we are much earlier this year, we will also be holding a gardeners question time as it was very popular a couple of years ago. Our panel will consist of three local gardeners who have a great deal of experience between them and I am sure they will be able to answer any questions that you throw at them. However, before this we will have the serious stuff of the AGM and as many of you know we are still requiring a Chairperson and Treasurer also our committee has decreased recently so we are hoping that a few members will come forward to join us. There is not an awful lot of work involved and any help would be greatly appreciated, talk to one of the committee and they would I’m sure be able to give you any information on the subject. Our trip to Sissinghurst Castle was lovely and we could not have asked for a better day. It was warm and bright and everyone enjoyed the experience. Gardening Tips for this month are: 1. Revitalise your borders by lifting and dividing perennials, get rid of plants that no longer work for you, improve the soil by digging out perennial weeds such as bindweed. Dig over and add well-rotted manure, position and replant your favourite plants and finally, add some spring bulbs and some new plants with extra colour. 2. In the veg garden, clear out peas and beans as they will succumb to disease, peas to powdery mildew and beans runner and French to rust. Prepare for frosts by having some protection such as cloches, newspapers or horticultural fleece. Harvest onions and use the ones which have produced new green shoots are no good for storing and should be used straight away. 3. Cover ponds with netting to keep the autumn leaves out, bring in ceramic pots to stop frost damage, sand down decking and treat with preservative. 4. Clean all bird tables and containers ready for the winter, check for hedgehogs as they will be on the lookout for a really nice place to lay their heads for the winter. It’s a very busy time of the year but I hope you can join us for our AGM which is also a social evening where our members can get together and chat, so I look forward to seeing you soon. ARTIST OF THE MONTH Eugene Delacroix 1798 - 1863 Delacroix once said “The artist who aims at perfection in everything achieves it in nothing”. His style emphasised colour and movement rather that precise outline. He was the foremost painter of the Romantic Movement in France. This period in art centred around personal expression such as Liberty, ending slavery and supporting democratic changes. His father Charles Delacroix was a Foreign Minister but there were rumours that he was the illegitimate child of a French diplomat called Talleyrand. He was orphaned at the age of 16 but received an upper class education at the Lycee Imperiale, Paris. Initially as a young adult he received a private income but later the family fortune was ruined by lawsuits over property. However an inheritance and contacts enabled him to continue to concentrate on forging a career as an artist. His influences came from a number of sources. A trip to England in 1825 saw him influenced by Shakespeare, Constable and the works of Lord Byron. His subjects were mainly historical and his use of colour in particular would have a profound effect on both the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionist painters. His career lasted almost 40 years, which enabled him to spend the latter part of his life decorating the walls and ceilings of Government buildings. After his death his executors found more than 9,000 paintings, pastels and drawings in his studio and today his greatest works are in the Louvre. Liberty leading the People This picture reflects the time between October and December 1830 after the “Three Glorious Days” of 27-29 July where the Parisian uprising defeated the regular army and toppled Charles X of France. The French Government initially bought the work but on further consideration found it to be too antiestablishment and withdrew it from view. The small boy next to Liberty is thought to be associated with Victor Hugo’s Gavroche in Les Miserables. (Article written by Ian Morgan) THE BLACKHAM CALENDAR LAST CALL! Withyham Parish Council (WPC) September 2013. For WPC Actions: Please access our website (see back cover of magazine) ESCC is looking into how they will implement cuts over the next year. Their budget is very tight and Children’s Services could be hit. New councillor Jonathan Kelly, (no relation!) representing Withyham/Blackham ward is promoting a safe crossing for children outside St Michael’s school, Withyham. Police and Neighbourhood Watch Reports: There is a helpful newsletter for the Withyham parish, which can be found on www.sussex.police.uk. Ward Reports St John’s Ward: A planning application has been submitted for a burial ground in a field at Forest Fold. There is a public need for such a facility, but proper consultation should take place before the WDC makes a decision. Withyham/Blackham Ward: WDC’s fly-tipping team has reacted swiftly to the fly tipping that has been taking place in the area. Pill Boxes: Sussex Military History Society (SMHS) are surveying about 60 pill boxes in the parish. We would like to protect pill boxes and gun emplacements and ultimately to gain listing for them so that local people and children can learn more about this extraordinary line of defence. SMHS will involve residents, schools, History Societies and WIs, starting with 6 pill boxes on Mr Ashby’s farm in Blackham. Please let him have your wartime memories via the WPC. Parish Office and Training Room: Details of the sub-lease of the Old Station, Groombridge, are being finalised with SVR. A flyer advertising the Meeting Room for training will shortly be issued If you are looking for a quiet room in which to hold company training sessions please contact us. Balls Green Play Area: The survey undertaken in Balls Green showed that the play area should remain where it is, but that it should be redesigned and revamped and promoted, with a view to involving the whole community. We have had confirmation that the lease has been renewed and that this is for ‘wider community use’ rather than just a playground. The working party will now be exploring sources of funding. Broadband: BT will be providing information about the progress of updating Broadband in the parish. Harrison Rocks: WPC has recently been informed of the probable demise of facilities at Harrison Rocks. The lease expires in November 2014 and Sport England will not be renewing it. It would be a disaster if this was to go. Being a Good Neighbour: WPC are producing a leaflet in how to be a considerate neighbour (for instance)by not lighting bonfires during the day; picking up after your dog has performed; trimming back your hedges; not parking on double yellow lines; not parking across people’s driveways - small courtesies but they mean a lot to your neighbours and fellow residents.
