Speech- working towards speaking and listening GCSE (assessment in next unit)
(3 weeks): Non- fiction writing-preparation for language exam Component 2, Section B This unit of work is intended to
enable students to study the skills of non-fiction writing, exploring transactional, persuasive and/or discursive writing
through a range of resources in preparation for two equally weighted compulsory tasks (worth 20 marks each), as per
Eduqas summative examination at the end of key stage 4.
Autumn Half-Term 1
Speaking and Listening- GCSE presenting a speech (record)
(1 week)
This unit of work is intended to enable students to study the skills of writing, and presenting a formal presentation or
speech. They will be assessed on their responses to questions and feedback following the presentation or speech.
Standard English should be a feature of all parts of the candidates’ work in this component. This component assesses
AO7, AO8 and AO9 as per Eduqas English language specification.
This unit will be reported as part of the qualification, but it will not form part of the final mark or grade. The component is
unweighted in relation to the overall English Language GCSE qualification.
Poetry anthology- preparation for literature exam
6 poems: (7 weeks)
The Manhunt, Sonnet 43, London, She Walks in Beauty, Valentine, A Wife in London.
During this unit of work students will study the above poems in preparation for the literature examination which all pupils
will take at the end of year 11. It will be assessed on component 1 Section B (20%) : Poetry from 1789 to the present day.

A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens (8 weeks)
Preparation for Literature exam.
During this unit of work students will study ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens for the literature examination which all
pupils will take at the end of year 11. It will be assessed on component 2 Section B (20%) There is one 45 minute essay
question based on an extract provided and the pupil’s knowledge of the novel as a whole.
Poetry Anthology (6 weeks): The study of a selection of poetry from 1789, including representative Romantic poetry.
The Eduqas Poetry Anthology consists of 18 poems that are linked by a variety of themes: love, war, conflict, power,
nature, childhood, memories, death, loss and relationships. Although, literal and sense of place seems to also be an
evident theme. In addition, individual poems lend themselves to more than one of the themes (eg. Nature and loss). Within
this unit, it can be a teacher’s choice which poems (themes). However, there are two more opportunities in Year 11 to
cover ALL poems from the anthology, as well as the skill of comparison.
Reading: 20th century fiction
Extracts (6 weeks)
Romeo and Juliet (8 weeks):
This unit involves the study of a variety of sources to explore the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare as well
as revisiting aspects of drama, language, language analysis, theme and structure. The main resources are copies of the
play and a plethora of subsidiary resources held within the shared areas to choose from.

Read, understand and respond to the text, maintaining a critical style, developing a personal response, and using textual

Blood Brothers (8 weeks)
This unit of work is intended to test throughout a secure based response, knowledge and understanding of the post-1914
prose/drama text. Learners will be expected to comment on the writer’s use of language, structure and form and show an
understanding of key themes, characters and ideas within the text. This assessment will also test students’ spelling,
grammar and punctuation. This element of the programme of study for KS4 assesses the skills outlined as per Eduqas
Assessment Objectives AO1, AO2 and AO4 weighting 20% of the English Literature qualification. Please note all skills
listed for each task should be studied in preparation for the summative examination at the end of key stage 4. (notecontext not assessed here. Spag is)
They will be given an extract. There will be 1 question which will be based on the extract and the wider play. They will need
to show close-reading skills by referring to details from a printed extract. They will then extend their discussion to the whole
text. They have 45 minutes.
