This year marks the 40th anniversary since the famous “Judgement
of Paris”. This was the tasting that put California on the wine map
internationally. Premium Bordeaux and Burgundy wines were pitched
against California wines and caused quite a stir when two Napa Valley
wines were awarded top scores by the French judging panel. California
is so much more than Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Since that judgement, new regions have developed across the state to
produce wines of all shapes and flavours, spilling out of the Golden State
into regions such as Oregon and Washington State.
The offering from California, Oregon and Washington State is
complemented with a selection of goodies from around Spain and Chianti.

Washington State, in the northwest
corner of the United States, has seen
an explosion of wineries over the last
two decades. The area can be divided
into two main production regions.
Puget Sound was originally planted
prior to prohibition by European
immigrants around Seattle. More
recently, vineyards lie to the east of
the Cascade Mountains. Winters are
cold and desert-like conditions exist as
the Cascade Mountains block storms
coming in from the ocean. Soils are
hugely varied, a result of cycles of
volcanic activity and floods depositing
sand, silt, granite and quartz with lava
flows and ash.
Oregon’s reputation is built on Pinot
Noir. The state attracted winemakers
from warmer regions wishing to
produce high quality wines from cool
climate varieties. The vast majority
of vineyards are planted west of the
Cascade Mountains with high humidity
and cool conditions.

NHV RIESLING, STRAND VINEYARD, NACHES HEIGHTS
AVA, 2014
Naches Heights is the most recent AVA within
Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Established in
$41.17 2011, it has around 40 acres of vineyards planted.
Unlike other areas within the Columbia Valley, its soils
are wind-blown volcanic loess rather than alluvial.
Naches Heights vineyards are planted between 300
$247.00 to 600 metres and are farmed using organic and
biodynamic methods. NHV Riesling 2014 has mineral
aromas with stone fruit and limes. The palate is off-dry,
balanced with firm acidity and long lemon and mandarin citrus flavours.
SMASNE CELLARS, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, THE
FARMER, COLUMBIA VALLEY, 2011
Coming from generations of farmers in the Yakima
Valley, Robert O. Smasne returned to the region in 2004
to make his own wine. He handcrafts small lots of wine
$57.50
from specific vineyards, working with local growers.
The Farmer is produced from grapes hand-picked from
some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the
$345.00 region. The 2011 shows a little development in colour
with intense aromas of blackcurrants, cherries and red
cherry compote. It is medium-bodied with a fine-grained
texture, a juicy mid-palate and a long vanilla and spice finish. Barrelaged for 24 months in 70% new oak barrels, it is well-integrated and
perfectly balanced, and will continue to improve over several years.

west was planted in 2001 and is a secret gem. Planted
at 320 metres, the cooler site produces small grapes
with thick skins which are packed with flavour. The
$463.00 2012 is vibrant in colour with aromas of blackberries
and other black fruits. Smooth and concentrated on the
palate, it is youthful with the potential to age, and was
matured in French oak.

KITARA VINEYARDS PINOT NOIR, BARREL SELECT, WILLAMETTE VALLEY,
ST. JOSEF’S WINERY, 2013
St. Josef’s first planted vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in 1978. The
family now farms five vineyards using sustainable practices, without the use
of irrigation or pesticides, and have been awarded Salmon-Safe certification.
Pinot Noir grapes from hillside plots were used to produce Kitara, named
after the winemaker’s son Kirk and daughter Tara. The 2013 has bitter
cherry, almond, leather and balsamic notes. Produced from a selection of the
best barrels, it was aged for 11 months in French and Hungarian oak and is
medium-bodied with persistent sour cherries and cranberry flavours. Perfectly
ready for drinking, it should hold for two to three years.

HOLLORAN RIESLING, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, 2013
Bill Holloran and his wife Eve set up this little winery fifteen
years ago and currently have 45 acres planted on five sites.
The Riesling was grown on La Chenaie Vineyard in the
Eola Amity Hills AVA, the southernmost sub-region of the
Willamette Valley, and Le Pavillon in the Red Hills of Dundee.
La Chenaie, a 103-acre site, currently has just one acre
of Riesling which was planted in 2001 and is organically
dry-farmed. The Red Hills of Dundee is so-called after the
volcanic red Jory soil, the “Official State soil”, which provides
excellent drainage. Here, Holloran possesses 1.5 acres
of Riesling planted in 1972, making it one of the oldest
vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Holloran Riesling 2013
has intense Riesling aromas with green apples, mineral and
smoky aromas. Only 89 cases of the 2013 were produced.
The palate has lemon and lime flavours, a touch of sweetness
with crisp acidity, and a green apple finish.

HOLLORAN PINOT NOIR, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, 2013
The warm summer and late rain led to a challenging
vintage in 2013, and Bill decided, rather than produce
single-vineyard wines that year, to use the best quality fruit
for his Holloran Pinot Noir. The grapes from Holloran’s
vineyards in Yamhill Carlton, Eola Amity Hills and Dundee
Hills were included. The result is a wine with cooked red
fruits, fresh black fruits, and vanilla oak. It is mediumbodied with a silky texture. Quite restrained in style with
an elegant finish and fine balance, it was matured for 18
months in French oak with about 15% new.

and Deborah Castillo, becoming a full time project with
the purchase of 66 acres in Walla Walla. Cohones, big
and bold as its name suggests, is deep ruby in colour
$294.00 with intense aromas of coffee essence, kirsch and
dark fruits. A blend of 60% Tempranillo, 26% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 3% Syrah and 3% Merlot, it

BOWLUS HILLS, WALLA WALLA VALLEY, RED WINE, ZERBA CELLARS, 2013
Walla Walla is one of a few wine regions to straddle two states, Oregon and
Washington, with approximately 40% of wineries located in Oregon. The Walla
Walla name comes from the Native American term for “place of many waters”.
This is a land of serious red wine, albeit relatively recent with all manner
of red grapes planted, most of which appear to be in Bowlus Hills 2013; a
blend of 20% Syrah, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 7%
Barbera, 6% Sangiovese, 6% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Zinfandel,
3% Grenache, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Dolcetto, 2% Mourvèdre, 2% Petite Sirah
and 1% Nebbiolo. It works! It is intense plum in colour with mellow aromas of
ripe fruits, dark cherries and vanilla. The wine was matured for 22 months in
American oak. Soft and juicy with flavours of black cherries and blackberries, it is
well-structured and balanced, finishing on savoury meaty notes and vanilla.

The Golden State is by far the most important wineproducing state in the US, both in terms of production
and reputation. This year is the 40th anniversary since the
famous “Judgement of Paris”. The tasting held in Paris in
1976 initiated a change in the perception of Napa Valley
and California in general. Since that time, winegrowers
and winemakers have sought out locations and climates
making a range of styles.
Here is a selection of our favourite wines from Sonoma,
including Hook & Ladder Vineyards and Winery in the
Russian River Valley and Blue Rock
Vineyard in Alexander Valley, along with
Castoro Cellars in Paso Robles.

HOOK & LADDER CHARDONNAY, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY, 2014
The De Loach family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Russian
River Valley for over 40 years. Cecil De Loach was a fireman in San Francisco
who started grape-growing on the side. Over time, he was hugely influential on
the development of the region. The Russian River Valley, at the southern end
of Sonoma, is one of the coolest regions due to a break in the coastal range of
mountains known as the Petaluma Gap. Mist rolls in from the Pacific Ocean from
late afternoon, providing the grapes with a shield from the strong sun. The fog
remains until late morning. Hook & Ladder Chardonnay has aromas of butterscotch,
vanilla custard and spice. Light to medium-bodied, it has flavours of banana, toffee
and lemon. Fermented in French oak barrels, the wine went through malolactic
fermentation and was matured on lees for eight months.

RIVER VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY, 2013
This is a stunning wine produced from a blend of 59%
Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon,
$55.83 4% Carignane, and 1% Alicante Bouschet. 2013 was
an exceptionally good year in the Russian River Valley
and Station Ten is a dense and vibrant colour with
mellow aromas of violets, blackberries and blueberries.
$335.00 Soft and smooth with juicy acidity and fresh berry
flavours, this is a wine with succulence, structure and
a fine texture. The grapes were slowly ripened on 100
year old pre-prohibition vines. The varieties were aged separately in
French and American oak for a year. It is named after the Station Ten
fire house in San Francisco where Cecil de Loach was based.

RANCH, ESTATE BOTTLED, CHALK HILL, SONOMA COUNTY, 2013
This single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from
Hook & Ladder’s Los Amigos Ranch vineyard just south of
the town of Healdsburg. Gradual heat progression through
the growing season in 2013 allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon
to ripen slowly with maximum flavour development. A small
amount of Merlot (5%) was added to enhance the silky
texture of the wine. The bouquet is complex with raisined
fruits, treacle, and savoury smoky characteristics. Velvety
in structure with fine texture and dark fruit flavours, it is
elegantly balanced with both suppleness and structure. A
wine with potential for cellaring, winemaker Jason De Loach,
Cecil’s grandson, is really coming into his own.

ESTATE BOTTLED, CHALK HILL, SONOMA COUNTY, 2013
Less exuberant and less ready for drinking than Station Ten,
The Tillerman is, however, concentrated and powerful. The
$55.83 grapes were grown at the Los Amigos Ranch in the Chalk
Hill sub-region of Russian River Valley where temperatures
are a little warmer and more suitable to varieties such as
Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are planted on a variety of
$335.00 volcanic and alluvial soils across the western foothills of the
Mayacamas Mountains range. Mellow aromas of chocolate
and some earthy fruits lead to a vibrant palate with flavours
of blackcurrants and sour cherries. This is a wine requiring a little patience
before it comes into its own. It is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon,
23% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese. Matured in a
combination of European and American oak for 17 months with 16% new
oak, it was bottled on July 15th, 2015.

BABY BLUE ESTATE RED BLEND, BLUE ROCK VINEYARD, ALEXANDER VALLEY, SONOMA, 2014
The 2014 Baby Blue is a blend of six grape varieties; 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot,
10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Syrah and 5% Malbec. Alexander Valley, in the north
of Sonoma County, lies along the banks of the Russian River Valley as it meanders southwards to
Healdsburg. Blue Rock Vineyard is in the north of the region, close to Cloverdale and the trailblazing
Silver Oak Cellars. Kenny Kahn was drawn to the region and purchased Blue Rock Vineyard in
1987 with his wife Cheryl. At the time, the estate was all but abandoned and has since been lovingly
restored. The original stone cellar dates back to the 1850s and acts as witness to the first Italian
settlers who brought vine-cuttings, olive trees and winemaking culture. Located on hillsides between
90 and 180 metres, 49 acres are planted with five Bordeaux varieties and Syrah, all of which are in
Baby Blue Estate Red Blend. Soils are shallow over a layer of clay and blue serpentine rock which
gives the estate its name. Baby Blue Estate Red Blend 2014 is absolutely delicious. Complex and
intense mellow aromas of dark fruits, vanilla and cedar give great appeal. The palate is mediumbodied with juicy fruits and a firm tannin structure. It is drinking well now and has great potential for
many years to come. Sonoma County has long been overshadowed by Napa Valley, yet this wine
shows what quality areas such as Alexander Valley can produce.

CAMBRIDGE COLD CREEK VINEYARD CHARDONNAY,
CARNEROS, 2014
Cold Creek Ranch is on the cooler Sonoma side of the
Los Carneros appellation. Aromas of passion fruit, lime
$39.00 and vanilla lead to a soft palate full of tropical fruits.
This is a smooth, medium-bodied dry white with flavours
of nectarines and other white fruits. The vineyard is
shrouded in fog in the mornings which slowly burns off
$234.00 as the region warms up. Chardonnay grapes are thus
protected from the sun’s rays to ripen slowly and retain
natural acidity. The wine underwent partial malolactic
fermentation and was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels,
although the oak remains subtly in the background.

Produced from 100% Napa Valley grapes, 2013 was a year that favoured laterripening varieties such as the noble Cabernet Sauvignon with consistent weather
allowing full development of flavour and tannins. Medium to full-bodied, the wine
is soft, supple and structured. The individual lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

steep eastern slopes in the Russian River Valley region, Tierra y Mar
Zinfandel is a massive wine at 16.8% alcohol! Despite its frighteningly
high alcohol level, the wine is perfectly balanced and very drinkable, a
testament to the concentrated, flavoursome grapes produced by the old
vines. Complex aromas of smoke, lavender, spices and wood lead to more
dark fruits and spice on the palate. Medium-bodied with good acidity,
it ends with some chewy tannin. It was matured for 13 months in 70%

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ
Málaga
Winemaking history in the hills around Málaga is one of
the oldest in Europe, but with demand for sweet wines
falling dramatically, many old vineyards were abandoned.
Clara Verheij and her husband André Both moved to
Andalucía in the 1990s. They bought a plot of land in
Sayalonga and found that unbeknownst to them they were
the proud owners of an abandoned vineyard; the vines
are 80 to 100 years old and were planted on the Terruño
Pizarroso slate soils. Today, they have received critical
acclaim internationally for their wines which are served in
dozens of Michelin-starred restaurants.
David, the proprietors’ godson, four years
old and already helping with the harvest.
They named the Ariyanas David, Tinto

ARIYANAS DAVID, TINTO DULCE, DO MÁLAGA,
BODEGAS BENTOMIZ, 2013

stood beside the vineyard centuries ago and comes from

from 100% Merlot, is a naturally sweet red wine with
aromas of redcurrants, sloes and raspberries. The grapes
were harvested at the end of August, and then left on
$206.00 drying racks for three days. The wine was fermented to
achieve 13% alcohol with a natural residual sweetness
perfectly balanced by the acidity. It was matured in oak
barrels for six months. It can be served as an apéritif, with chocolate and

CINCIANO BIANCO, IGP TOSCANA, 2015
Stone fruits and mineral aromas belie the mandarin
and tangerine citrus flavours on the palate. This is a
soft, smooth wine with a crisp lemon acidity and a long
grapefruit finish. Produced from 70% Viognier, 20%
Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Grechetto, it has great
appeal. Vines are cultivated on slopes of Albarese soils
at 200 metres with south east exposure. After picking
by hand, the grapes were de-stemmed, pressed and the
juice rapidly cooled and left to decant.

CINCIANO GOTIFREDO, IGP TOSCANA, 2015
Grapes from young Sangiovese vines were used to
produce this flavoursome rosé. Raspberry pink in colour,
it has a savoury edge to the nose, with bready notes
and some blackcurrant. This is a serious style of rosé,
well-balanced with firm acidity and structure. The vines
are four to ten years old, planted on stony compact soils
composed of shale, schist and limestone.

CINCIANO CHIANTI CLASSICO, DOCG, 2014
Youthful with concentration and a tight structure,
Cinciano Chianti Classico 2014 merits some keeping
before opening. Aromas of red cherry and vanilla lead
$30.17 to a linear structure with good balance, ripe tannins
and a dense, but fine texture. Produced from 100%
Sangiovese cultivated between 250 and 350 metres,
yields were restricted to 1.3 kilo per vine with grapes
$181.00 harvested by hand at the end of September, early
October. Fermentation was carried out in cement tanks
for ten days at 28°C to 30°C. The wine was matured in

BUTTERFLY RIDGE CHARDONNAY, MONTEREY COUNTY,
2014
The northernmost areas of Monterey, those closest to the
ocean, are cold and windy with gusts and fog blowing in
from Monterey Bay. This is viticulture at the limit of being
almost too cold to grow and ripen wine grapes; perfect for
high quality Chardonnay. Butterfly Ridge Chardonnay 2014
COUPON has spicy fruit aromas leading to a soft, broad palate with
crisp lemon acidity. Vines were planted over thirty years ago
on sandy loam soils. The grapes were harvested and fermented in stainless
steel with no use of oak. The wine went through malolactic fermentation to
temper the grapes’ natural cool climate acidity.
