This was the tasting that put California on the wine map internationally. Premium Bordeaux and Burgundy wines were pitched against California wines and caused quite a stir when two Napa Valley wines were awarded top scores by the French judging panel. California is so much more than Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Since that judgement, new regions have developed across the state to produce wines of all shapes and flavours, spilling out of the Golden State into regions such as Oregon and Washington State. The area can be divided into two main production regions. Puget Sound was originally planted prior to prohibition by European immigrants around Seattle. More recently, vineyards lie to the east of the Cascade Mountains. Winters are cold and desert-like conditions exist as the Cascade Mountains block storms coming in from the ocean. Soils are hugely varied, a result of cycles of volcanic activity and floods depositing sand, silt, granite and quartz with lava flows and ash. Oregon’s reputation is built on Pinot Noir. The state attracted winemakers from warmer regions wishing to produce high quality wines from cool climate varieties. The vast majority of vineyards are planted west of the Cascade Mountains with high humidity and cool conditions. La Chenaie, a 103-acre site, currently has just one acre of Riesling which was planted in 2001 and is organically dry-farmed. The Red Hills of Dundee is so-called after the volcanic red Jory soil, the “Official State soil”, which provides excellent drainage. Here, Holloran possesses 1.5 acres of Riesling planted in 1972, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Holloran Riesling 2013 has intense Riesling aromas with green apples, mineral and smoky aromas. Only 89 cases of the 2013 were produced. It is mediumbodied with a silky texture. Quite restrained in style with an elegant finish and fine balance, it was matured for 18 months in French oak with about 15% new. This year is the 40th anniversary since the famous “Judgement of Paris”. The tasting held in Paris in 1976 initiated a change in the perception of Napa Valley and California in general. Since that time, winegrowers and winemakers have sought out locations and climates making a range of styles. Here is a selection of our favourite wines from Sonoma, including Hook & Ladder Vineyards and Winery in the Russian River Valley and Blue Rock Vineyard in Alexander Valley, along with Castoro Cellars in Paso Robles. Old Vine Zinfandel surrounding the tasting room, walking up the grape arbor at Castoro Cellars. CALIFORNIA >> ONTARIO 11 Sonoma Having previously played second fiddle to neighbouring Napa Valley, Sonoma has a diverse range of terroirs and microclimates. In the right hands, Sonoma holds its own, producing high-quality wines. Kisses of warm California sunshine and cool breezes flow through the Chardonnay vineyards of the Hook & Ladder winery in the Russian River Valley. Hook & Ladder Vineyards and Winery, Russian River Valley 8723 $55.83 $335.00 HOOK & LADDER CHARDONNAY, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY, 2014 The De Loach family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Russian River Valley for over 40 years. Cecil De Loach was a fireman in San Francisco who started grape-growing on the side. Over time, he was hugely influential on the development of the region. The Russian River Valley, at the southern end of Sonoma, is one of the coolest regions due to a break in the coastal range of mountains known as the Petaluma Gap. Mist rolls in from the Pacific Ocean from late afternoon, providing the grapes with a shield from the strong sun. The fog remains until late morning. Hook & Ladder Chardonnay has aromas of butterscotch, vanilla custard and spice. Light to medium-bodied, it has flavours of banana, toffee and lemon. Fermented in French oak barrels, the wine went through malolactic fermentation and was matured on lees for eight months. The grapes were slowly ripened on 100 year old pre-prohibition vines. The varieties were aged separately in French and American oak for a year. It is named after the Station Ten fire house in San Francisco where Cecil de Loach was based. Gradual heat progression through the growing season in 2013 allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly with maximum flavour development. A small amount of Merlot (5%) was added to enhance the silky texture of the wine. The bouquet is complex with raisined fruits, treacle, and savoury smoky characteristics. Velvety in structure with fine texture and dark fruit flavours, it is elegantly balanced with both suppleness and structure. A wine with potential for cellaring, winemaker Jason De Loach, Cecil’s grandson, is really coming into his own. CALIFORNIA HOOK & LADDER VINEYARDS AND WINERY >> 8725 HOOK & LADDER THE TILLERMAN, LOS AMIGOS RANCH, ESTATE BOTTLED, CHALK HILL, SONOMA COUNTY, 2013 Less exuberant and less ready for drinking than Station Ten, The Tillerman is, however, concentrated and powerful. The $55.83 grapes were grown at the Los Amigos Ranch in the Chalk Hill sub-region of Russian River Valley where temperatures are a little warmer and more suitable to varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are planted on a variety of $335.00 volcanic and alluvial soils across the western foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains range. Mellow aromas of chocolate and some earthy fruits lead to a vibrant palate with flavours of blackcurrants and sour cherries. This is a wine requiring a little patience before it comes into its own. It is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese. Matured in a combination of European and American oak for 17 months with 16% new oak, it was bottled on July 15th, 2015. Alexander Valley, in the north of Sonoma County, lies along the banks of the Russian River Valley as it meanders southwards to Healdsburg. Blue Rock Vineyard is in the north of the region, close to Cloverdale and the trailblazing Silver Oak Cellars. Kenny Kahn was drawn to the region and purchased Blue Rock Vineyard in 1987 with his wife Cheryl. At the time, the estate was all but abandoned and has since been lovingly restored. The original stone cellar dates back to the 1850s and acts as witness to the first Italian settlers who brought vine-cuttings, olive trees and winemaking culture. Located on hillsides between 90 and 180 metres, 49 acres are planted with five Bordeaux varieties and Syrah, all of which are in Baby Blue Estate Red Blend. Soils are shallow over a layer of clay and blue serpentine rock which gives the estate its name. Baby Blue Estate Red Blend 2014 is absolutely delicious. Complex and intense mellow aromas of dark fruits, vanilla and cedar give great appeal. The palate is mediumbodied with juicy fruits and a firm tannin structure. It is drinking well now and has great potential for many years to come.
