How to Use
Help your students interact with words by using these
Vests for phonemic awareness activities, word-building
lessons, and all phonics activities in the classroom. Just
slide a letter into the plastic pocket, place a Vest on
each student needed to make a word, and press the
hook-and-loop fastener together.
Wearable Spanish Word Builder Card Vest™ Activities
Help students practice identifying beginning consonants
with a simple game of choice. Choose a word and slide
the appropriate Letter Cards (excluding the beginning
consonant) into Vests. Place the Vests on students and
have them stand in the proper order in front of the class.
Have someone put on a Vest without a letter and stand
at the beginning of the word. For example, if the word was
gato, then the first student would wear the blank Vest,
the second student the a, the third student the t, and
the last student the o. Explain to them that the word
you want to spell is gato and the beginning consonant is
missing. Hold up Cards for three different consonants
(including the g) and
have them choose the
correct beginning
consonant. Once the
correct letter is
chosen, have the
student place the g
in the blank Vest.
Have students
repeat the word and
challenge them to use it in a
sentence. Allow them to work with words until each
student has had the chance to wear a Vest. This activity
can be extended to work with syllables, final consonants,
diphthongs, and accented vowels.
Vowels on Vacation
Challenge your students to identify vowel sounds and
their corresponding letters in an interactive game of
Vowels on Vacation. Explain to them that they are going
to play a word game where one of the vowels is missing in
a word. Choose a word that has a vowel, such as dedo,
and place the Letter Cards (excluding the first vowel) in
the Vests. Place the Vests on students along with one
blank Vest to represent the missing vowel and have them
stand in the correct order. Challenge them to choose the
letters to make a word. For example, if the first student
is wearing d , the second student is wearing the blank
Vest, the third student is wearing d, and the fourth
student is wearing o, they could choose the vowels
a, e, and u to make different words. As a correct vowel
is chosen, have the student place the Vowel Card in the
Vest. Have them place emphasis on the vowel sound as
they repeat the word.
Make-a-Word Mix-Up
Let your students have some fun unscrambling
vocabulary or spelling words. Place Letter Cards in Vests
to make a word, then place the Vests on students and
have them stand in a mixed-up order. Tell them the word
their letters make and have them place themselves in the
correct order.
