There are two kinds of conflict:
Worldly Conflict. It looks like this...
Godly Conflict. It looks like this...
Jesus had to deal with conflict. How? Through the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of Him.
How should we deal with Conflict?
With Grace...

SSCC Partners with Tab Smith Ministries
to reach the Navajo Reservation
Update June 2015
Tab Smith Ministries, Inc. is a non-profit
ministry dedicated to providing biblically
based, theological training to those who would
otherwise go without. While our efforts in the
past have reached globally, since 2008 our
focus has narrowed more and more upon the
people of the Navajo Reservation. The Navajo
Reservation is the largest reservation in the
United States. Over 180,000 indigenous people
inhabit a reservation roughly the size of West
Virginia located at the four corners region of
the American Southwest, and many thousands
more Navajo live just over the border of the
reservation. Unemployment is at a staggering
42 percent, with the poverty rate being about
the same. This number is higher than many
developing nations. Many of these people
live without running water and electricity. The
high school education completion rate is at 56
percent, and college education is lower than
10 percent. All of this is happening right here
within our own borders.
Past efforts to bring Christianity to the Navajo
were blended with efforts to assimilate Navajo,
including violent and coercive efforts. Because
of this history, many Natives see Christians,
especially white Christians as people who
cannot be trusted. Our efforts on the
reservation are about reestablishing proper,
loving relationships with these people and
showing them what true Christianity is about.
Christianity is by far the smallest religion on
the reservation. Yet, when most people think
about missions to foreign cultures in need
of the love of Jesus Christ, they overlook the
Navajo and other Native cultures right here
within our own borders. When we began to
work with some of the Navajo Christians, it
became apparent that the lack of outreach
from churches around the U.S. made the Navajo
churches feel very isolated and forgotten as
part of the Body of Christ.
What we have found, however, is that the
harvest is ripe. All they need is for the Body
of Christ around them to come together in
support, not to lead their ministries for them,
but to serve and partner with them where they
need assistance.
In 2012, Tab Smith Ministries, Inc. along
with our partners began to help the Navajo
churches and pastors obtain legal recognition
through helping pastors gain ordination. Many
of the pastors we serve have been preaching
for almost 25 years, but this is the first time
any group has provided them with recognition
and authority to run their own churches. No
longer do these churches depend on outsiders
to make the decisions. No longer do they wait
for missionaries to come to do the baptisms,
communion, and the like. Local Navajo leaders
now run their own churches, and because they
now have been told of the authority given to
them by Christ, many churches we serve have
doubled in size. They know so much more
intimately how to serve their own people
than outsiders. Humbling ourselves to allow
them to lead in this role has been our greatest
achievement.
The process of establishing trust is naturally a
slow process, and we have consistently made
our summer mission trip all about this process
by serving the children of the reservation.
By providing the children a week of fun and
excitement, as well as a week were they are
guaranteed food, we continue to show the
Navajo people that we truly are there to
love, even with something as simple for us as
Vacation Bible School. VBS is common here,
but to the people of the reservation, it is a deep
sign of love. We at Tab Smith Ministries, Inc. are
delighted to have members from SSCC join us
as we go this week to love on the children of
the Navajo Reservation. Please pray for us as
we go forth to share His love.
