To whom it may concern,
Our mission:
“We work every day to be the first and not to leave thirsty ones on the planet”
Let us represent a biggest brevery in East Europe in Ukrain. Production and trade of beer, soft
drinks, mineral water, production of low-alcohol beverages and kvass, production of snacks.
The corporation’s history dates back to 1974 when the construction site of the future brewery
was sand filled. The start-up of production was dedicated to the 1980 Olympic Games.
Czech experts were engaged in the project as world-renowned brewmasters. They were the ones
who identified the construction site for the new brewery. The choice of construction site was
determined by the main factor, namely the availability of huge reserves of soft, crystal-clear
water. Today, the water from Jurassic bedrock (290 m) ensures the high quality of our products.
Soon afterwards, the enterprise gave the impetus to developing the largest corporation in Ukraine
to produce beer, low alcohol and soft drinks, and mineral water.
The plant received its current name only in 1986, after the district of Kyiv with the same name.
The word ‘Obolon’ comes from the times of Kievan Rus, when it denoted low riverside
meadows.
Built according to a Czech design, the brewery produced beer that gained wide popularity. After
Ukraine became independent, Obolon was the first corporation to export hopped beverages to
Europe and the USA. Obolon trademark beer started being perceived as traditional Ukrainian
beer in the whole world.
After a quarter of a century, Obolon has evolved into a world-renowned trademark. Today
people on five continents associate Obolon with Ukrainian beer #1.
Obolon is the largest producer of beer and beverages in Ukraine. It is a national corporation
comprising a main plant in Kyiv and eight enterprises in the regions of the country. Obolon
remains the only 100% Ukrainian company among the leaders of the Ukrainian beer and soft
drink industry.
Production
In 2013 enterprises of Obolon PJSC produced 96.6 million decaliters of beer, 19 million
decaliters of non-alcoholic beverages, 2.8 million decaliters of soft drinks and 7 million
decaliters of mineral water. Such production volumes enable Obolon to assert itself as one of the
leaders in all markets where the corporation’s products are offered. Besides drinks, Obolon
produces industrial goods such as brewer’s malt, granulated brewer’s grain and packing band
made of recycled PET containers.
Export
Having paved the way to Western markets, Obolon was the first company in the former Soviet
Union to export beer. Today the company confirms its status of the largest beer exporter in
Ukraine and strengthens the presence in foreign markets.
According to 2012 results, the company’s share in exports of hopped drinks increased to 80%.
More than 27 million decaliters of beer were produced for international consumers. New
countries appeared on Obolon’s export map, namely the Czech Republic, Croatia, China, OAE,
Camerun and other. Today, 40 countries worldwide are familiar with the inimitable taste of the
Ukrainian beer created by Obolon’s experts.
The export program is directed at developing long-term partnership relations with international
distributors. Obolon attempts to provide minimum contractual prices for its partners and offers a
wide variety of transport and timely shipments. All that and adaptation of the product range and
exterior design to the realities of a specific country makes cooperation with foreign partners
mutually beneficial and promising.
Investments
Obolon continues to improve the quality of its products and processes. That’s why the company
invests in development of its enterprises and installs the most up-to-date equipment, allowing it
to take lead in technical equipment not only in Ukraine but also in Europe.
For instance, the launch of a modern malting plant with annual capacity of 120 thousand tonnes
of malt enabled Obolon not only to provide itself with premium quality raw material, but also to
export it. The overall investments under this project amounted to $100 million. Large-scale
modernization of Zibert’s Brewery, a subsidiary of Obolon with a more than 100-year history is
ongoing. Over EUR 40 million have been invested in setting up new brewing facilities,
fermentation tanks and filling lines.
Innovations
The Obolon plant in Kyiv is the largest brewery in East Europe with a rated capacity of 11
million hectoliters of beer per year. In the last two years, a unique Ziemann brewing system was
installed. It makes 12 brews of 750 hectoliters of cold wort each day. The high quality of the
products is guaranteed by four powerful filtration plants made by the German KHS company on
the order of the Kyiv brewery. The largest filter has an hourly capacity of 950 hectoliters. The
Obolon filtration system is unique both in Ukraine and in Europe. The company has Europe’s
largest bottling filling line with maximum capacity of 110 000 glass bottles per hour. Plastic
bottle, can and keg filling lines also distinguished by their huge production capacity.
In order to mitigate the environmental load, Obolon has invested funds in a unique installation
for drying brewer's grain – a waste product that is generated in huge volumes (up to 700 tonnes a
day) during the preparation of beer wort. Upon drying and granulation brewer’s grain is turned
into a rather valuable animal forage, which cannot help but interest large agricultural enterprises.
Products
Anyone can find items to meet the tastes of the most experienced gourmets from the variety of
Obolon products. The following beer trademarks comprise the company’s portfolio: Obolon,
Magnat, Hike Premium Beer, Zibert, and Desant. Famous non-alcoholic brands are Zhyvchyk,
Prozora and Obolonska mineral waters, and the Jett line of energy drinks.
Last year Obolon started to bottle the licensed Bitburger Premium Beer. Specialists of Bitburger
Braugruppe confirmed that the plant’s equipment allows it to produce a high-quality beer that is
identical to the German Bitburger. This testifies to the highest level of confidence and
recognition of quality of all processes at the Obolon brewery.
Industrial products
Brewer’s malt
High-quality Pilsen barley malt. The best sorts of European brewing barley are used for malt
production. By adhering to regulatory standards, the malt meets Ukrainian and international
requirements for organoleptic and physicochemical parameters (color, humidity index, extract
content, protein content, etc).
Brewer’s grain
Brewer’s grain is formed after the filtration of beer wort during the brewing process. It is a
natural, ecologically clean product with a high protein content. Brewer’s grain is used in
agriculture as high quality animal feed. It is a totally natural and bioactive product without
chemical impurities. Brewer’s grain moisture at the initial stage is about 79%, and 8-12% after
drying and granulation. Moreover, yeast is added to the product when dried, thus increasing the
protein content up to 20-22 %.
Quality standards
The quality of raw materials and products is thoroughly monitored by in-house cutting-edge labs.
They ensure ongoing product quality analysis at all stages of production. The use of natural and
safe materials enables the company to make tasty products free of hazardous and GM
components.
Obolon PJSC was the first enterprise in the food industry to certify four management systems in
compliance with international standards: ISO 9001:2001 (Quality Management System), ISO 22
000:2007 (Food Safety Management Systems), ISO 14 001:2006 (Environmental Management
Systems), OHSAS 18 001:2006 (Occupational Health and Safety Systems). Introduction of these
management systems is proof that the customer can rest assured of the quality and safety of the
company’s products.
Corporate and social responsibility
Obolon carries out its activities in compliance with high social standards, paying special
attention to environmental friendliness, working conditions of employees, and investments in
social development. For example, average water discharge for production of 1 liter of product at
Obolon PJSC is about 3 liters. On average, 5 liters of water per liter of end product are spent in
the industry worldwide. At the same time, Obolon sells, processes and recycles over 89% of its
own waste, thus taking real care of the environment. For example, Obolon is the only player in
the Ukrainian FMCG market to recycle PET bottles into packing band. The corporation’s social
programs are aimed at developing Ukrainian the book publishing industry, spiritual and
historical heritage, and nurturing national identity in children and young people.
Technologies
Obolon’s main technological aim is continuous improvement of product quality and all
production processes. That is why the company installs the latest equipment that enables it to
take the lead in technical equipment not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe.
Two the most modern breweries in Ukraine are part of the corporation. These are Obolon’s main
plant in Kyiv and Ziebert’s Brewery’ in Fastiv, Kyiv Region.
The rated capacity of the Kyiv plant is 11 million hectoliters of beer per year. This makes the
enterprise the largest brewery in Europe. In the last two years, a unique Ziemann brewing system
has been installed. It makes 12 brews of 750 hectoliters of cold wort each day. The main feature
of this brewing system is that it reduces brewing-related heat loss by half. Energy efficiency is
one of the priority tasks the company’s engineers are facing today. One of the achievements we
are proud of is a unique facility for extracting beer from spent yeast that produces 500 000-600
000 decaliters of beer per year. Such technologies enable us to set up almost waste-free,
environmentally friendly production. A responsible attitude to the environment is also one of
Obolon’s priorities.
High product quality is guaranteed by four powerful filtration plants manufactured by the
German company KHS by order of the Kyiv brewery. The largest filter has a capacity of 950
hectoliters per hour. The Obolon filtration system is unique both in Ukraine and in Europe. The
company features Europe’s largest bottling filling line with maximum capacity of 110 000 glass
bottles per hour. In 2008 a new can filling line was put into service. It is able to fill 60 000 cans
per hour and container volume can be 0.25 l, or 0.3 l or 0.5 l. The keg filling line has been also
significantly modernized, and now its capacity is one thousand 50-liter kegs per hour.
Zibert’s Brewery in Fastiv, Kyiv Region has turned into a modern, hi-tech enterprise after
reconstruction over the last two years. During a large-scale investment project valued at 40
million euros, a modern German beer production facility was installed. As a result, the
company’s productive capacities have increased by 15 times to 1.5 million hectoliters of beer per
year. Brewing facilities and filling lines for various kinds of containers have increased
accordingly.
Raw material is as much important as equipment for the production of a quality product. One of
the main components of beer production is malt. In order to obtain high-quality malt, the
corporation built a malting plant in Chemerivtsi, Khmelnitsky Region. Now it is one of the most
advanced enterprises on the continent. Leading international companies were chosen to supply a
complete set of production equipment. Total investments were $100 million. The plant’s
capacity is over 120 000 tonnes of malt per year. The plant processes 180 000 tonnes of barley
(450 tonnes a day). The malting plant features a variety of innovative solutions that allow us to
improve processes significantly and reduce consumption of resources. For example, circular
malting plots and a system of dry barley transportation system instead of a water system are
used. Hot air is recovered in a drying room, and membrane system of wastewater treatment is the
only one of its kind in Europe.
Along with brewing, an equally important line of the company’s activity is beverage production.
In particular, this is the main specialization of the Krasylivske Subsidiary, Khmelnitsky Region.
This is an excellent enterprise, producing low-alcohol and soft drinks and mineral water. The
personnel of Krasylivske Subsidiary successfully deal with problems of harmonious coexistence
of large production facilities and an ecologically clean natural zone.
Automation plays a crucial role at all Obolon plants. Main production functions are carried out
by machines and people just monitor the whole process. This shows not only technological
efficiency, but also compliance with the most stringent standards of product quality and high
level of organization of all processes. Thanks to experienced technologists, many of whom have
worked in the industry for over a quarter of a century, Obolon is able to implement advanced
experience, create new tastes, and constantly improve beverage recipes. For this purpose, the
most modern experimental, production, radiological and technical control laboratories operate at
the enterprises. They ensure both constant product quality analysis at all stages of production and
development of innovative products.
Best regards, PGSC OBOLON.
