Thema 3: Lebensmittel: Essen und Trinken (Groceries: Food and Drink)
Food is a big topic: lots of new vocabulary! This section is almost exclusively vocabulary — so make
sure to practice the new nouns for food and drink!
There is not much to add to this reading section. It teaches a lot of excellent nouns for food and
drink items in Germany and touches on the categories of food (das Obst, das Gemüse, die Backwaren)
as well as the small shops where you could buy those items in Germany.
You will probably want to reference the vocabulary list on page 170, or check these links for more interactive

In addition to food items (nouns), you will also need to know the following small shops in Germany, which are still
thriving and common places to buy individual types of food:
die Bäckerei .............................bakery for bread and rolls
die Konditorei........................... sweet baked goods, cakes, pastries
die Metzgerei / die Fleischerei ...... butcher shop for meat, sausage
der Getränkeladen ..................... beverage shop (soft drinks, juice, alcohol)
der Markt ................................open-air farmer’s market
der Obst- und Gemüsestand ..........fruit and vegetable stand at an open-air market
der Supermarkt .........................supermarket (like in USA)
der Bioladen .............................organic or health-food store
die Apotheke ............................pharmacy (prescription AND over-the-counter)
die Drogerie .............................cosmetics, household goods
Mostly we’re talking about grocery shopping here — we’ll be coming back to the ‘food’ topic next chapter to discuss
restaurant meals and cooked dishes. If you want to look at a brief overview of common meals in German culture, the
Wikipedia article on German Cuisine ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cuisine ) does give a good overview. But we
will return to that topic in chapter 6 and discuss German cuisine and restaurants more thoroughly. Focus here on
simply the basic words for items of food in grocery stores.

Aktivität 14 und 15
You will complete activities 14 and 15 as part of your Connect Aufgabe, so you can briefly skim
the textbook pages for now until you complete those assignments. The others are not assigned.
Now that you have learned a good deal of basic food and grocery vocabulary, you should complete the Aufgabe
on the Connect website. After you have completed those exercises, move on to the next reading guide (page
163), where we learn a small grammar topic about the words for ‘where’ and ‘where to’ and ‘where from’ in
German.
