Fall 2014 - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County Fall Newsletter 2014
Thank you Pike Falls!
Check out the picture of two kids who went to camp this summer thanks to Pike Falls!
Pike Falls Classic came through for the kids again this summer. Thanks to their past
efforts in fundraising, they were able to send another 20 children to summer camps
through their established endowment fund. Pike Falls Classic partners with Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Lanark County to choose the children to attend week long sleep over
camps of their choice.
Over the years, more than 454 children have had a week long overnight adventure
thanks to the dedicated work of the local group. Historically, Pike Falls Classic
volunteers have held bike raffles, Toy Runs and Bike Shows, all to create the Lanark
County Camp Fund, which ensures that every child in the Big Brothers Big Sisters
programs who wants to go to camp gets to go. Now the group of volunteers has retired
from their duties, but the fund they established continues to provide camp opportunities
for area children. Dalton Mason has taken the reigns of Secretary Treasurer to ensure
the funding is managed and maintained in the way it was designed to be.
1st Annual Dine Out Day
Local restaurants throughout Lanark County are partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Lanark County in the first Annual Dine Out Day event. These restaurants have
agreed to share a portion of their day’s proceeds from this event with Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Lanark County. When you dine out and let these restaurants prepare your
meal on September 11th, you will help to provide more children in our community with a
mentor.

After School Program Volunteers Needed
Please contact Kiefer Vincent ([email protected]) for more
information
Our after school programs have a great reputation for providing an outstanding overall
experience to participants. The programs are focused on physical activity, healthy
snacks and mentoring.
We are looking for dedicated volunteers to work between the hours of 3pm and 5:30pm
in either Perth or Smiths Falls at a variety of school locations. There are opportunities to
volunteer one to three times per week, depending on location.
This is an opportunity well suited to high-school and college students as there are many
volunteer hours to be had. Others are also welcome to apply. Start date will be midSeptember and volunteers can participate for half or all of the school year.
Attention Bigs & Littles! Fall Activities are SET!
We have a busy Fall planned, full of fun activities for our matches and our waiting
Littles. We kick things off with a movie night hosted by Carolina Suites in Perth.
Following this, we will be offering a yoga class, snack and craft in late October. Our
instructor will be Big Sister, Stacey Shrout, and her Little Sister will be assisting. And
finally, we will be hosting our Annual Children’s Christmas Party in mid-December. This
year, we will be moving to a new location, the Lanark Civitan! As always, all activities
are offered free of charge. I look forward to seeing many of you there and stayed tuned
for more information.
Be a Volunteer – Start Something Today!
The summer was spent developing new and exciting mentoring programs for the
upcoming school year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County is expanding our After School
program, which has been a huge success in Perth, to the Smiths Falls area. St
Francis de Sales and Chimo Public School will be the likely locations for this
great mentoring program.

We are also in the planning stages of a home work club. Working with our local
Smiths Falls library we hope to offer this program to area grade 7 and 8 students
to help them with homework completion, tutoring and preparation for secondary
school.

The agency has also developed a new intergenerational program that matches
seniors from Van Horne Manor Retirement Residence with children from a local
school to share stories, engage in arts and crafts and spend time together.
All of our existing programs and the implementation of these new programs rely
heavily on community volunteers.
So, on behalf of the entire mentoring team I would like to encourage you to become a
volunteer. Whether you are a student, teacher, senior, someone waiting to find a job in
your field, or just someone who has a free hour of time to give, we want to hear from
you.
Your involvement will not only help you acquire much valued experience working with
children and youth but will provide the opportunity for more local children and youth to
have access to the benefits of a quality mentoring experience. Call us. Drop into the
office. Email us. Whatever way you chose to contact us I encourage you to get involved.
With Our Thanks...
