UNIT 5 VOCABULARY

Inference: a conclusion drawn from available information

Tragedy: a dramatic work that presents the downfall of a dignified character or
character who are involved in historically or socially significant events

Allusion: referring to a well-known person, place, or thing

Comic Relief: a humorous scene, incident, or speech that is included in a serious
drama to provide a change from emotional intensity

Soliloquy: a speech in which a character speaks thoughts aloud; character is generally
alone on stage

Aside: a dramatic device in which a character speaks his or her thoughts aloud in
words meant to be heard by the audience but not the other characters

Blank Verse: unrhymed iambic pentameter Juxtaposition: an act or instance of
placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast.

Foil: a character who provides a striking contrast to another character

Iambic Pentameter: lines of five unstressed syllables, each followed by a stressed
syllable in poetry
