THE POWER TO MAKE THINGS GROW MAGNIFIED NUTRIENTS FOR A GROWING TOMORROW HIGH PLAINS PRODUCT PORTFOLIO 2 TO GROW, EVERY LIVING THING NEEDS NUTRIENTS. They are the building blocks that sustain life. At Koch Agronomic Services, a global leader in plant growth solutions, we understand the importance of nutrients in our world. We’re developing new technologies and more efficient fertilizers that will help feed our growing planet. As part of Koch Industries, Inc., a privately held company with some 100,000 employees operating in 60 countries across the globe, we have access to an array of resources. Our research, processes, systems and people all lead to unexpected innovations. Koch Agronomic Services will continue to find new ways to deliver even smarter solutions, helping our world’s living things thrive today and in the future. 3 THE CHALLENGE: KEEPING NITROGEN AVAILABLE TO NOURISH PLANTS. Depending on your soil type, your fertilizer is susceptible to losing more than 50% of its nitrogen through three forms of loss. At Koch Agronomic Services, we’ve developed a line of products to help protect against this loss. Some products protect against ammonia volatilization with one mode of action, while others provide additional protection against denitrification and nitrate leaching with two modes of action. 1 2 3 4 AMMONIA VOLATILIZATION This occurs when the soil’s urease enzymes break the urea molecules into ammonia gas. Up to 40% of surface-applied urea-based nitrogen not incorporated into the soil via rainfall, irrigation or tillage can be lost through volatilization. This type of loss can occur with every soil type. NITRATE LEACHING This form of nitrogen loss happens when negatively charged nitrate is moved below the plant’s root zone by percolating water. Leaching is most common in sandy soils. DENITRIFICATION This form of nitrogen loss occurs when nitrate nitrogen is converted back to gaseous forms. The nitrogen diffuses out of the soil and is lost into the atmosphere. Denitrification occurs in soils that are poorly drained or become waterlogged. THE SOLUTION: NITROGEN STABILIZER TECHNOLOGY. Let’s make nitrogen loss one less thing to worry about. Whether you’re losing nitrogen through ammonia volatilization or need additional protection against denitrification and nitrate leaching, we have you covered. Here are our products that offer you the security you need: AGROTAIN® NITROGEN STABILIZER AGROTAIN® nitrogen stabilizer is the original, most research-proven urease inhibitor technology on the market. With 20 years of trials and real-world results on millions of acres worldwide, it’s the one growers trust to protect their nitrogen investment and yield potential every time. Single mode of action to control volatilization AGROTAIN® PLUS NITROGEN STABILIZER AGROTAIN® PLUS nitrogen stabilizer contains the premier urease enzyme inhibitor technology and a proven nitrification inhibitor that protects nitrogen from ammonia volatilization, denitrification and nitrate leaching. Featuring two modes of action, it can be combined with UAN or liquid manure to protect against all three forms of nitrogen loss. Dual mode of action to control all three forms of loss SUPERU® FERTILIZER SUPERU® fertilizer is a finished, stabilized fertilizer product that contains both a urease and a nitrification inhibitor to protect nitrogen against denitrification, nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization. It contains the highest concentration (46%) of nitrogen available in a stabilized granular fertilizer that protects against all three forms of nitrogen loss. Dual mode of action to control all three forms of loss 5 There is a common belief in the marketplace that AGROTAIN® AGROTAIN® ULTRA nitrogen stabilizer reduces the activity of nitrogen stabilizer only provides protection against nitrogen loss urease enzymes, giving the soil more time to replace the consumed for 10 to 14 days after application. THIS IS A MYTH. hydrogen ions. When urea-based fertilizers are treated with AGROTAIN® ULTRA nitrogen stabilizer, a urease inhibitor for AGROTAIN® ULTRA nitrogen stabilizer, it helps maintain the proper urea and urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizers, can stabilize pH levels to avoid the volatilization losses that can occur. your nitrogen no matter how long it takes to move below the surface. This performance is made possible by the inhibitor slowing urea hydrolysis. By slowing this process, the soil has the Reaction 1: CO(NH 2) 2 + H + + 2H 2O ability to resist changes in pH in the immediate vicinity of the Reaction 2: NH 4+ 2NH 4+ + HCO 3- NH 3(gas) + H + urea; resulting in lower ammonia volatilization loss and a higher crop yield potential. A compilation of studies revealed that, on average, 40 percent of REALITY CHECK surface-applied nitrogen in urea-based fertilizers can be lost within When granular urea and UAN fertilizers are surface-applied, several days through ammonia volatilization if it is not incorporated an enzyme known as urease breaks apart the urea-nitrogen into the soil. When urea was treated with AGROTAIN® ULTRA (Reaction 1). This process consumes hydrogen ions (H+) in the nitrogen stabilizer, only about 10 percent was lost* (Figure 2). soil, increasing pH values up to 9.0 or higher in the surrounding Furthermore, the losses reached a plateau demonstrating the long- soil. The fact is, AGROTAIN® stabilizer is able to provide protection for well past 14 days. Here’s how it works: when granular urea and liquid UAN fertilizers are surface-applied, the urease enzyme breaks apart the urea-nitrogen. AGROTAIN® nitrogen stabilizer reduces the activity of urease enzymes. By slowing this activity, the soil has the ability to resist changes in the pH in the immediate vicinity of the urea, resulting in a lower ammonia volatilization loss and an optimal crop yield potential.
