DELTA DENTAL OF SOUTH DAKOTA JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Dental Assistant Trainee DEPARTMENT: Delta Dental of South Dakota Foundation REPORTS TO: Mobile Coordinator PAY STATUS: Hourly OVERVIEW OF POSITION: This is not your ordinary, everyday dental assistant’s job. Instead, our dental assistants work out of a 40-foot-long, state-of-the-art mobile dental unit and help keep kids across the state of South Dakota smiling. This position offers the opportunity to work with a dedicated team of professionals to improve the oral and general health of children and a limited adult population. Communicating effectively with people individually, as well as in small and large groups is important. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Program Equipment Maintain and prepare the operatory room and instruments for patients Assist with preparing the mobile units for transport and operation Stock supplies on the mobile units every week Assist with ordering, cataloging, and keeping an inventory of supplies and equipment Patient Treatment Provide chair-side assistance during dental procedures Take digital x-rays (upon being certified after 3 months of on the job training) Disinfect and sterilize the instruments after seeing each patient Perform duties/tasks as assigned by the mobile coordinator to best meet the needs of the patients Provide patient care in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures regarding the provision of clinical dental care Records Management Complete thorough and accurate dental charting on each patient Enter patients’ personal data in to the computer Record patient health histories Infection Control Participate in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities both on-site and off-site as required Follow OSHA standards/OSAP Created June 2015 OTHER Travel is required. The mobile buses depart Pierre on a Monday morning and do not return until Friday afternoon. Working hours will vary. On the job training will be provided. Exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort: combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: No prior dental knowledge or experience is required Must have a high school diploma or equivalent education Must possess a valid South Dakota driver’s license Must have basic computer skills Ability and willingness to learn a new skill Must be able to obtain CPR certification within the first 90 days of employment Must be current on all vaccinations (including Hepatitis B) or willing to become current on vaccinations within the first 90 days of employment Successful completion of a criminal background check *Disclaimer: This job description is not meant to be all-inclusive.
