Learning targets Chapters 1&2 I can trace the roots of the enlightenment • Traced back to the Greeks and Romans Everything can be explained through science and reason The human mind can understand everything I can explain why the rule of law is the basis for our legal system today • The basic premise of our government is that everyone is equal under the law. • In order for our legal system to be just, the law must be applied equally to everyone I can trace the history and ideas of natural law • Thomas Aquinas thought that some laws our granted by God and not man • Locke thought that governments exist to protect these natural laws which include the right to life, liberty, and property I can explain how the political struggles and documents of England contributed to American political ideals • Limit the power of the monarch • People had rights that were ensured by government • Representative government (wanted a voice in who was in government) • All this happened because of the king abusing his power I can describe the significance of the Virginia House of Burgesses and how its members were elected • The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first Representative government in America giving a voice in government for • 2 members of each community were elected to represent them I can explain why the Mayflower Compact was an important step in the development of a democratic government in America • In the Mayflower Compact every man voted on laws that everyone would follow • These laws were to be just and equal and for the good of the colony • Majority (most of the people ) ruled on these votes • Governed themselves for 70 years I can identify examples of self government • Mayflower compact • Virginia House of Burgesses • Colony of Pennsylvania I can explain the moral ideas of the Great Awakening • Responsible for your own salvation • The right to judge and act in matters of religion • Choose their own faith I can explain the political ideas of the Great Awakening • Americans were more willing to challenge British authority • All people were equal under God • People wanted a voice in government I can explain the effects the Great Awakening had on the colonies • The Great Awakening united the colonies In their pursuit of religious and political freedom
