American Red Cross Swim Lessons
Guppies
For children ages 6 months to 3 years
Guppies learn water awareness, basic swimming skills
and swimmer safety. Parents are the key to fun and must
participate in the water. This is not a learn to swim class; it is
a way to introduce your child to the water.
Goldfish
For children ages 3 and 4
Goldfish learn water awareness, basic swimming skills (on
front and back), breath control, entering/exiting the water
with and without support and swimmer safety.
Level 1
For children ages 4 and older (or tested out of Goldfish)
Level 1 covers water awareness, basic swimming skills,
floating and swimming on front and back with and without
support, breath control, entering/exiting the water with and
without support, and swimmer safety.
Level 2

Level 6
Children must be able to demonstrate all skills from Level 1
Level 2 covers floating and beginner strokes on front and
back without support, rolling over and changing direction,
orientation to deep water and swimmer safety.
Children must be able to demonstrate all skills from Level 2
Level 3 covers rhythmic breathing, complete front and back
crawl strokes, elementary backstroke, butterfly kick, deep
water bobbing, kneeling dives, and swimmer safety.
Level 4
Children must be able to demonstrate all skills from Level 3
Level 4 covers breaststroke, butterfly, compact dives,
turns, treading water, underwater swimming, and
swimmer safety.
Children must be able to demonstrate all skills from Level 4
Level 5 covers breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flip turns,
treading water with different kicks, shallow dives, beginner
progression from the diving board, and swimmer safety.
Children must be able to demonstrate all skills from Level 5
Level 6 covers lifeguard readiness, which includes all
strokes, turns and lifeguarding skills.
Pre-Team
Swimmers must be able/willing to swim freestyle 25
yards with rotary breathing, swim backstroke 25 yards, be
familiar with breaststroke and butterfly, dive off the side of
the pool or starting block, be deep-water safe, and tread
water for 2 minutes.

GUPPIES AND MINNOWS LESSONS
WHY MINNOWS? Is your child too young for Goldfish but needs more of a challenge than our
Guppies program offers? This small class is designed to teach safety and work to your child’s ability.
Children must be 2 years old, be able to sit and wait their turn, follow directions and not need their
parents in the water.

Developmental Swim Program
We realize that not all swimmers want to be competitive or join a swim team. With our developmental program,
participants will work on the four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke-specific
starts and turns also are practiced. Watch your child’s swimming improve without the pressure to compete. Program
instructor James Hull will focus on teaching and fine-tuning skills to help your child become a safe, strong swimmer
who enjoys the water.
Minimum 5 swimmers required for this program
When: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays. Please register by the previous Tuesday for each session.

Fun Attack Swimming
For children ages 5 through 12. Must be deep-water safe.
Looking for a swim activity that utilizes your child’s CCBA swim lessons yet doesn’t have the competition of swim
team? We incorporate 1 skill-building activity each week into swim races, water games, and a swim challenge with a
surprise incentive. Must be deep water safe. Wednesday or Thursday or both! 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Drop- in class. $12.00 1st child, $8.00 2nd child for each day. This is a drop in class that you can register the day of
class or to guarantee a spot, commit by registering ahead of time.
