Evolution What are the basic tenets of theory of evolution? What is a homologous structure? Describe how biologists use homologous structures to determine evolutionary relationships. Know how to interpret and/or construct a cladogram if provided information about specific organisms. Taxonomy & Classification Name the seven levels of biological classification. Which level is most inclusive? Most exclusive? What are the rules for writing a scientific name? Characteristics of Animals What are the specific characteristics unique to members of the animal kingdom? Animal Body Plans/Symmetry What were the four major events (trends) in the evolution of animal body plans? Name and describe the 3 major bilateral body plans. (acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, coelomate) Name the three different cell layers found in all bilateral body plans. Describe the difference between radial, biradial, and bilateral symmetry. Identify the 3 different planes that are used to divide the body of a bilaterally symmetrical animal. Distinguish between ventral & dorsal, anterior & posterior, pectoral & pelvic, medial & lateral. Explain why bilateral symmetry and cephalization are characteristics of most actively crawling or swimming animals. Animal Phyla Study the table(s) of characteristics that we filled out in class. Questions concerning these phyla will focus on the major defining characteristics of each group of animals. Phylum Porifera Phylum Cnidaria Phylum Platyhelminthes Phylum Nematoda Phylum Annelida Phylum Mollusca Dissections Questions dealing with these specimens will focus on their MAJOR characteristics. These questions will be written so that if you were paying attention during the dissections you should reasonably be able to answer them. Specimen Earthworm Clam Squid Important Structures/Question crop, gizzard, nephridia, setae, clitellum What function does the clitellum serve in the reproductive behavior of earthworms? valves, mantle, gills, labial palps, incurrent siphon, excurrent siphon What are the two functions that the gills serve for the clam? mantle, funnel, arms, tentacles, ink sack, gills Describe the locomotion of the squid.
