Examination Procedures Thisdocumentprovidesimportantinformationaboutexaminationprocedures.Whilethe contentsmaybefamiliartoyouinageneralway,weaskyoutopayspecialattentiontothe proceduresforpostponementandpreponementofscheduledfinalexaminationsandfor extensionsbeyondUniversitydeadlinesforthesubmissionofend-of-termworkotherthan scheduledexaminations.Weusethiscommonsetofproceduresinsteadofindividual arrangementsbetweenstudentsandinstructorsintheinterestofensuringfairandeven- handedtreatmentforallofourstudents.Studentswillbeexpectedtoabidebythese procedures,andweaskmembersofthefacultyandassistants- in-instructiontodosoaswell. Administration of final examinations 1.1 Oversightofexaminationscheduling:Assignmentsofthetimeandplaceof final examinationsoranychangesinthemarecentrallyadministeredthroughtheOfficeof the Registrar. 1.2 Scheduledtimeforexaminations:Examinationsshouldbeginandendduring the three-hourscheduledtimeperiod. 1.3 HonorSystem:TheHonorPledge,whichallfacultyanddepartmentsareaskedto have printedoneachexamination,shouldbewritteninfullbyeachstudentandsigned.The pledgeis:"IpledgemyhonorthatIhavenotviolatedtheHonorCodeduringthis examination."Itistheresponsibilityoffacultymemberstoreportpossiblebreachesofthe HonorSystemtotheHonorCommitteeortothedeanofundergraduatestudents. TheseproceduresareimportanttotheintegrityoftheHonorSystem,whichisacentralpart ofundergraduateeducationatPrinceton.ThesuccessoftheHonorSystemdependsupon the seriousnesswithwhichstudentsabidebyit,thecooperationofthefaculty,andtheuse of consistentprocedures.AfulldiscussionoftheHonorSystemisgiveninthe "Undergraduate Announcement,"andtheproceduresfortestsandexaminationsare describedinthe"Rules andProceduresoftheFaculty."QuestionsconcerningtheHonor Systemshouldbeaddressed tothechairoftheHonorCommittee,AntoniaHyman'13([email protected]),orthe clerk,KosaluchiNwokeneche-Mmegwa([email protected]), ortheassociatedeanof undergraduatestudents,VictoriaJueds([email protected]),aswellas [email protected] 1.4 Seatingassignmentsandleavingtheroom:Studentsshouldbeseated alternatelyin theassignedroom.Studentsmayleavetheexaminationroomtotakeashort break,butthey maynottaketheirexaminationswiththem. 1.5 Forbiddenitems:Laptopcomputersandhandheldelectroniccommunications devices (e.g.,cellphones,iPods,BlackBerrys,iPhones,etc.)areforbiddeninfinal examination rooms.Studentsmaynotwearheadphonesattachedtotaperecordersor radiosduring examinations. 1.6 Latearrivals:Astudentwhoarriveslateatanexaminationbutwithin30minutesof thescheduledstarttimewillbegiventheexaminationandpermittedtocompleteasmuch workaspossibleduringtheremainingtime. Astudentwhoarrivesmorethan30minuteslateforanexam,ormissestheexam altogether,maybepermittedtotakeamakeupexamundercertainconditions.Thestudent may,ofcourse,choosetocompletetheexamintheallottedtimeremaining.Astudentwho wishestopursuethepossibilityofamakeupexammustreportimmediatelytohisorher residentialcollegedean.Thedean,inconsultationwiththecourseprofessor,willdetermine whetherthestudentisingoodstandinginthecourseandwhetherthestudentiseligiblefor amakeupexam.Ifthedeanisnotavailable,thestudentmustreporttothedeputyregistrar, whowillarrangeforthestudenttotakeanimmediatemakeupexam.Thestudentwillbe notifiedthathe/shehasprovisionalpermissionforthemakeupandthatthismayresult eitherinagradingpenaltyorinarevocationoftheexamshouldthedeandecidethata makeupwasnotappropriate.Studentswhorequestalateexamwillberequiredtosigna statementtestifyingtothevalidityoftheirclaimandtheirawarenessthattherewillnotbe asecondopportunityforalateexaminanyothercourse.Astudentwhohasalreadytakena makeupforamissedexaminanothercourseandwhoarrivesverylateforasecondexam hasnoalternativebuttotaketheexaminthetimeremaining.Ifsuchastudentmissesa secondexamaltogether,thestudentwillreceiveafailinggradeforthemissedexam. 1.7 Specialaccommodations:TheOfficeofDisabilityServiceswillnotifyfacultyin advanceofanystudentwhoqualifiesforspecialaccommodations,suchasextendedtimeon examinations.Anyrequestsforspecialaccommodationsbroughttothefacultymembermust bereferredtotheOfficeofDisabilityServices. 1.8 Handinginexaminationsandrecordingincompletes:Attheconclusionof the examination,thepapersshouldbecheckedcarefullyagainsttheclasslisttoascertain who handedinexams,aswellastoestablishwhichstudentsonthelistdidnothandin exams. StudentswhodidnothandinexamsshouldbereportedimmediatelytotheOffice ofthe Registrar.Where"Incompletes"(postponements)havenotbeenauthorizedby letterfrom theOfficeoftheDeanoftheCollege,theexaminationshouldbecountedasa failurewhen thefinalgradeiscomputed.Unauthorized"Incompletes"andmissinggrades arerecorded asFsbytheOfficeoftheRegistrar. 2. Postponement of final examinations Individualfacultymembersmaynotauthorizepostponementsorpreponements offinalexaminations 2.1 Authorizingpostponementofanexaminationofupto24hours:Onlythe Officeof theRegistrarmayauthorizeapostponementofascheduledfinalexaminationfor individual studentsofupto24hoursafterthescheduledtimeonlyforcompellingreasons, suchas religiousdays,personalemergenciesoranunusuallycrowdedexamination schedule(two examsinoneday). StudentswhohavebeenapprovedbytheOfficeoftheRegistrartopostponeanexamination mustpresenttheirapplicationtotheinstructoratleast48hourspriortotheexamination, exceptintheeventofillnessorpersonalemergency. 2.2 Authorizingpostponementofanexaminationofmorethan24hours: Onlythe OfficeoftheDeanoftheCollege,actingfortheCommitteeonExaminationsand Standing, mayauthorizepostponementsofmorethan24hours.Postponementsofmore than24 hoursnormallyaregrantedonlybecauseofillnessorothercompellingreasons essentially outsidethestudent'scontrol.TheOfficeoftheRegistrarreschedulesfall-term postponementsofmorethan24hoursduringthethirdweekofthespringterm.Anew examinationmustbepreparedforsuchpostponements. 2.3 Reschedulinganexamination:Examinationsrescheduledtotheweekend(Saturday or Sunday)forreligiousorotherreasonsaretheresponsibilityoftheOfficeoftheRegistrar. FacultymemberswillsupplyacopyoftheexaminationtotheOfficeoftheRegistrarby Fridayatnoonsothatthetestcanbeadministered.Itwillbereturnedtothedepartmenton thenextbusinessday. 3. Illness and final examinations 3.1 Astudentfallssickbeforeanexamination:Astudentwhofeelstoosicktotake an examinationmustreporttoMcCoshInfirmarypriortothescheduledexaminationtime and contactDeputyRegistrarJuliaAggreh([email protected];609-258-7242).If McCosh confirmstothedeputyregistrarthatthestudentisincapableoftakingthe examinationat thattime,therearetwopossibleoutcomes.Ifthestudentrecovers sufficiently,heorshe maytakethesameexaminationwithin24hoursoftheoriginally scheduledtime.The deputyregistrarwillnotifythestudentofthenewtimeandplaceof therescheduled examination.Ifthestudentissoillthatalong-termpostponementis needed,thestudent shouldcontacthisorherdeanaswellasthedeputyregistrar.Allfalltermexaminations postponedmorethan24hoursarerescheduledbytheOfficeofthe Registrarforthethird weekofthespringterm.Allspring-termexaminationspostponed morethan24hoursare rescheduledinearlySeptember. 3.2 Astudentfallssickduringanexamination:Astudentwhobeginsanexamination will, exceptintherarestofcircumstances,beheldaccountablefortakingtheexamination andwillbeassignedagradebasedontheworkcompletedonthatexamination.Therefore, any studentwhobecomesillduringanexaminationshouldtryhisorherbesttocompleteit. A studentwhoseconditionissoseriousthatitrequiresurgentmedicalattentionshould reportimmediatelytoMcCoshInfirmaryandthennotifythedeputyregistrar,aswellas hisorherresidentialcollegedeanordirectorofstudies,assoonaspossible.Students shouldbeawarethatfallingillduringanexaminationwillrarelybecausefor rescheduling.Ifastudenthasbeguntotakeanexaminationatthescheduledtime,hisor hergradewillnotsubsequentlybealteredonthegroundsofpoorhealthorother problems. 4. Preponement of final examinations Postponementisthenormalalternativetotheregularexaminationschedule.Anexamination maybegivenearlierthanscheduledonlywhenspecificallyauthorized.Ordinarily, preponementsaregrantedonlyforreasonsessentiallyoutsidethestudent'scontrol,notfor reasonsofpersonalconvenience.Anewexaminationmustbepreparedforpreponementsof morethan24hours. TheOfficeoftheRegistrarmayauthorizeanindividualstudenttotakeascheduledfinal examinationlessthan24hoursbeforethescheduledtime.OnlytheOfficeoftheDeanofthe Collegemayauthorizepreponementsmorethan24hours. Individualfacultymembersmaynotauthorizepostponementsorpreponementsof finalexaminations. 5. Reporting of final grades 5.1 Submittinggradesonline:Facultymemberssubmitgradesonlineat http://www.princeton.edu/hrsa.Theregistrarwillnotifythefacultyandacademic departmentswhentheironlinegraderostersareavailableforgradesubmission.Grade changes,includinglategradesintendedtoreplaceauthorized"Incompletes,"arealsodone onlineviathe"GradeChange"linkontheTeachingandAdvisingwebsiteat http://www.princeton.edu/hrsa. 5.2 Pass/D/Fail:IfastudenthaschosenaPass/D/Failgradingoption,theOfficeofthe RegistrarwillconvertagradeofC-orabovetoaP.GradesofDandFwillberecordedas submitted. 5.3 Auditors:Instructorsshouldreportthegradeof"AUD"forstudentswhosegradingbasis showsAUDITand havesuccessfullymetminimumauditrequirementsforthecourse.For studentswhodidNOTcompletetheworkrequiredfortheaudit,thefacultyshouldreport thegradeof"DRP"ontherosterandthecoursewillbedroppedfromthestudent'srecord. 5.4 FilingA+orFgrades:FacultywhoassignafinalcoursegradeofA+orFtoan undergraduatemustsimultaneouslyfileanA+oraFailureStatementforeachstudent.Such statementsmustbesubmittedbytheinstructor-in-chargeofthecourse.Thesitefor submittingA+/FailureStatementsishttps://odocweb.princeton.edu/saf.Whenyoulogin withyourNetIDandemailpassword,youwillbepresentedwithalistofthecoursesyou taughtthisterm.Clickoneachcoursetodisplaythelistofenrolledstudents,andselectthe studentforwhomyouwishtosendastatement.
