Teachers’ Instructions (1/2)
Abbreviations 1
(assuming Student A does not already
know the answer), Student A refers to the
sample questions at the bottom of the
worksheet. The Q&A dialogue could
sound like this:
Student B: Does the 1st initial stand for
National?
Student A: No, it doesn’t.
Student B: What’s the 2nd letter of the
1st initial?
Student A: It’s an “O.”
1. Student ability: Intermediate ~ Advanced
2. Approximate length of lesson: 25+
3. Number of students necessary: 2+
4. Preferred age/maturity: JHS, College, Adult
5. Type of lesson: Pair Work Activity
*****
Language Target: Learning the meanings
of commonly recognized abbreviations.
All of the abbreviations in this lesson are
found scattered throughout the written
media and most will be recognized and
understood by students. What the letters
actually stand for, however, is another
matter.
Setting Up: Write a few of the more
commonly known abbreviations on the
board such as DVD, FBI and TKO. Ask
students if they know what these
abbreviations stand for. Divide the class
into pairs. Give one student Worksheet
A and the other Worksheet B.
Getting Started: Student B has the
abbreviation and the answer on
Worksheet B. Student A only has the
abbreviation N A T O printed on
Worksheet A in bold lettering. Student
A asks Student B questions in order to
arrive at the correct meaning of the
abbreviation N A T O . To do this,

Student B: Does the 1st initial stand for
Norwegian?
Student A: No, it doesn’t.
Student B: What’s the 3rd letter of the
1st initial?
Student A: It’s an “R.”
Student B: Does the 1st initial stand for
North?
Student A: Yes, it does.
At this point, Student A writes the
word North on the worksheet. Then the
students continue on to the next word,
Atlantic, by following the dialogue
above. Once the name of the organization
N o r t h Atlantic Treaty Organization
has been completed, students reverse
roles and begin working on the meaning
of the abbreviation IOC.
They continue in this manner until
all of the abbreviations have been
correctly identified.
Variation 1: Don't hand out the worksheet
at first. Divide the class into two (three,
four or five) teams. Write each
abbreviation on the board, one at a time,
and offer a point to the team that first
identifies the abbreviation correctly.
If no team can correctly give the
wording for the abbreviation, students

(something like) the Foreign Business
Incorporation.
Variation 2: Using the same method as
above, play a version of Believe Me!
(Lesson Collection Set 2 – Lesson 11a).
If no one knows the correct answer, tell
the students a possible answer, which
may be correct or incorrect. Students cast
their votes as to how much they believe
the answer.
Each team votes unanimously;
either Yes or No. The teacher gets one
point from each team that believes the
bogus answer.
For example, if no one knows that
FBI stands for the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, tell them that it stands for
