04 Spanish Missions

Read Frankie’s report about Spanish Missions and think about how it should be
revised. Then answer the questions that follow.
Spanish Missions
(1) After Coronado did not find the Seven
Cities of Gold, Spain ignored Texas. (2) Spain was not the
only country interested in Texas, though. (3) Sieur de La
Salle from france started a settlement on the coast of Texas.
(4) Spain did not like this one bit! (5) Spain had to do
something to keep its hold on Texas.
(6) Spain came up with a plan to stop the French. (7) They would build missions across
Texas. (8) The missions would be run by Catholic priests. (9) The priests would teach the Indians
about the Spanish way of life. (10) Spain hoped the Indians would become loyal citizens of Spain and
help protect Texas.
(11) In all there were thirty-five missions built in Texas. (12) They were not all built at
once. (13) Spain would build missions when they had extra money. (14) In the 1600’s they built two
missions in east Texas to keep the French back. (15) They also built three missions in far western
Texas, near present day El Paso. (16) In the early 1700s, they built a string of missions in present-day
San Antonio. (17) They also built five more missions in east Texas. (18) Later in the 1700s, Spain built
another twelve missions in Texas. (19) Most of the missions had a fort nearby to protect the mission.
(20) Spanish soldiers lived in the presidios.
(21) Spain planned to turn the missions over to the local people so the Indians could
run the missions theirselves. (22) This took a very long time. (23) The missionary priests did not want
to turn the missions over because they thought the Indians would fail at maintaining the missions
and the Spanish way of life. (24) They were concerned about hostile Apaches and other dangers.
(25) It was’nt until the 1830s that the last mission was finally turned over to local people by Spain.
(26) Many of the Spanish missions began to crumble and do not exist today.
(27) However, many of the missions have been restored. (28) Today, there is a string of five missions
in San Antonio that have been restored, including the Alamo. (29) It is the largest concentration of
Spanish missions in the United States.
