Consider trying out some of the following suggestions to
enhance student learning.
At the end of each unit, have students write a speech
using all of the idioms they have learned.
In each How is this idiom used? Section, have students
point out why each Incorrect sentence uses the idiom
improperly and why each Correct sentence uses it
appropriately.
Encourage students to draw their own cartoon using each
idiom correctly.
Reward students for recognising idioms as they read
novels, comic books, or newspapers.
Deliver each Practice Section like a test and score
students‛ work with the Answer Key.
Have students create flashcards for all of the idioms
in this book. Use the flashcards to play games with
students.

At the drop of a hat
What does this idiom mean?
At the drop of a hat sounds like it means “to let go of a head
covering,” but it really means “to happen quickly.”
Here‛s a sentence using this idiom:
I can‛t be ready leave at the drop of a hat
because it will take too much time to pack.
Here‛s a cartoon using this idiom:
He is always
ready to go
fishing at the
drop of a hat!
In this cartoon, how do you know that the boy was ready
to go fishing at the drop of a hat?
