Longdean Link Headlines Edition 16 - 20 May 2016 Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends Exam season is now in full swing and students in Year 11 and Post 16 have begun to sit their papers in the full range of subjects. Year 11 finish on Friday of this week and we are all looking forward to sharing this important milestone in their lives with them. Although students and parents are fully aware of the arrangements I would like to reiterate that students need to bring their shirt to sign with them to school and must be wearing a clean shirt during the day on Friday. The reason for this is that many students are sitting an examination on Friday itself and it is important that they arrive for this in full uniform. There will be plenty of time to celebrate and sign shirts before and after school as well as break and lunch but it is important that students support their peers and staff during the day. Last week I had the pleasure of being involved in the interviews for Head Boy and Head Girl for next year. Each year the standard and calibre of applicants for this role increases and this year was no exception. After the hustings stage and a formal interview I am delighted to announce the following appointments to our Post 16 Leadership Team: Head Girl – Molly Workman Head Boy – Adam Hatchett Deputy Head Girl – Emily Rogers Deputy Head Boy – Ben Brocklehurst Chair of the School Council and Representative on the Cooperative Trust Forum – Lydia Clark Social Secretary – Jack Forbes I am very excited about working with these students in the weeks and months ahead. They will begin their new roles when they return from study leave. The current Post 16 team celebrate their leaving of Longdean on Thursday 26 May. Again this is a day we all look forward to and enjoy with the students. The East Dacorum Cooperative Learning Trust continues to do great work as it nears its second anniversary. This term we have already hosted a parenting workshop and we have some staff development sessions planned across the three schools for later this term. These will feature prestigious speakers like ‘The Real David Cameron’ and Tim Brighouse amongst others. We are also planning our primary transition project involving eight primary schools as well as our next student event for students across the partnership. This is scheduled for the Autumn Term. All in all a busy term. Best regards G Cunningham Headteacher Numeracy Multiply the number of months with 31 days by the number of months with 30 days. What does this give you A liner equation produces a straight line graph. The equation of a straight line is y = mx + c; where m is the gradient and c is the y-intercept. Game designers use equations of straight lines to program character’s movements. They went on the visit as part of their crime and deviance topic, which is all about understanding why some individuals may be classed as ‘criminals’. The education programme we took part in was run by the NCCL - The National Centre for Citizenship and the Law who deliver innovative law and justice workshops in legal and heritage sites across the UK. The particular aim of our visit was to understand the different roles within the courtroom and to gain a full understanding of crime and punishment through time. Students were invited to take part in a mock trial, which took part in a real courtroom! They were given a case before hand and told they had to prepare in advance – the roles included being a Judge, Barristers, Solicitors, Witnesses and being a member of the Jury. The case they were given was based on the real case of R v Rouse – a man who was found guilty of murdering an unknown person by setting his car on fire and allegedly faking his own death!
