PRINTMAKING
Defining the Figure
in Monotype
Sat & Sun, Jan 17-18, 9-4 pm
Degas was the first to use
monotype to explore color and
composition. There is no better
way to learn the elements of
drawing and painting than by
doing monoprints directly from
life. Starting with charcoal
sketches and transitioning into
black and white monotypes, we
will draw and print from a clothed
model. On the second day, we
will refer to photographs of our
models as we continue working
in additive and subtractive
approaches to monotype.

Fresco Printing
Sat & Sun, Jan 24-25, 9-Noon
>
Monotype Study
by Dawn Emerson
Renaissance masters created
frescos by painting on freshlyapplied plaster. As the plaster
cured, the painting became part
of the plaster. This class will
explore methods for printing into
fresh plaster to achieve a “fresco
print.” Once cured, these plaster
prints can accept additional
media, such as digital image
transfers.

TUMBLEWEED PRESS
tumbleweed press: spring break
Kitchen Litho
Solar Printing
Mon-Wed, Mar 23-25, 9-Noon
Grades 6-12
Mon-Wed, Mar 23-25, 1-4 pm
Grades 6-12
This class is for kids who like to
draw! Lithography (or “litho”) is
one of the most accurate ways
to reproduce a detailed drawing
or quick sketch into an original
edition of prints. Traditional
lithography used heavy limestones
and toxic materials, and required
complicated, time-consuming
steps. Kitchen Litho is an exciting
break-through—it’s quick, nontoxic, and uses inexpensive
materials found in most kitchens.
We’ll explore the science and
history of lithography, then
experiment with a variety of
grease-based drawing tools to
create different kinds of drawings.
Create several plates and use our
hand-operated press to print an
edition to save or share.
Turn your digital photos and
collages into artistic prints by
“etching” them into light-sensitive
solar plates. We’ll discuss the
science of solar plates and how
contemporary artists use this
medium to make original work.
Play with combining and collaging
negatives and transparencies to
create an interesting image. Learn
how to ink and wipe solar plates
by hand, and pull prints with our
hand-operated etching press.
Create a small edition to save or
share.

understanding of core science
standards through art-based
learning. A6 art educators will
introduce you to three printmaking
processes—solar printing,
cyanotypes, and collagraph—that
are effective and creative tools
for exploring a variety of scientific
concepts.
Foster deeper engagement and
work quality by injecting an artistic
component into student writing
projects. A6 art educators will
introduce you to three options
for elevating your students’
creative expression—image
transfer, linocut, and leporello
book binding. Used separately
or combined in a single project,
these processes encourage
thoughtful consideration of
word choice, narrative or poetic
