By Grace Blue Whales Blue Whales are the biggest animal still living, they are the largest mammals ever. Blue Whales are up to 30 metres long and weigh around 200 tons. Their tongue is as heavy as a fully grown elephant and their heart is as heavy as a car. Why I Chose the Blue Whale I chose the Blue Whales because they are becoming endangered. I also chose the animal because they are very interesting animals. I would highly recommend people doing this animal for a project. Diet Blue Whales feed on krill. Krill are tiny shrimp-like things that live in the open sea. Krill swim in massive mobs which means most of the time the Blue Whales get a big feed. Krill are at least as small as your thumb nail How Blue Whales Eat The giant Blue Whales feeds by first gulping an enormous mouthful of water, expanding the pleated skin on their throat and belly to take it in. Then the whales tongue forces the water out through the thin overlapping baleen plates. Thousands of krill are left behind and then swallowed. Pleated throat Scientific Name Balenoptera Musculus Conversation Blue whales make conversations with each other by making a deep kind of drumming noise and a kind of low “whom, whom” noise. They are both very quiet to humans. Hunting For part of the year Blue Whales live in the Antarctic and they eat at least 6-7 tons of krill everyday. Blue Whales don’t really have any predators, except for killer whales when they are young, and humans in their whaling ships. Did You Know? Did you know that Blue Whales were not hunted in the olden days because the wooden ships were too slow to catch them. But when ships were invented with motors, almost all Blue Whales were killed. Distribution The Blue Whale lives in Antarctica or the Artic, and then travels to warmer places, such as Queensland, to have their calves. A Blue Whale will cover large distances looking for food and often swim alone or with their calves. Five Interesting Facts Blue Whales have been alive since dinosaurs . They can swim up to 48km per hour. Blue Whales are the most fussiest eaters. They are nearly as blue as the ocean which is how they got their name. What's Unique About Them They are the largest living mammal ever known. They’ve been around so long. Their pleated skin allows them to take in heaps of food. Thanks For Listening!!!
