Blue Whales
Blue Whales are the biggest animal still living, they are the largest
mammals ever. Blue Whales are up to 30 metres long and weigh around
200 tons. Their tongue is as heavy as a fully grown elephant and their
heart is as heavy as a car.
Why I Chose the Blue Whale
 I chose the Blue Whales
because they are
becoming endangered. I
also chose the animal
because they are very
interesting animals. I
would highly
recommend people
doing this animal for a
project.
Diet
Blue Whales feed on krill. Krill are tiny shrimp-like things that live in the
open sea. Krill swim in massive mobs which means most of the time the
Blue Whales get a big feed. Krill are at least as small as your thumb nail
How Blue Whales Eat
The giant Blue Whales feeds
by first gulping an enormous
mouthful of water,
expanding the pleated skin
on their throat and belly to
take it in. Then the whales
tongue forces the water out
through the thin overlapping
baleen plates. Thousands of
krill are left behind and then
swallowed.
Pleated throat
Scientific Name
Balenoptera Musculus
Conversation
Blue whales make
conversations with
each other by making
a deep kind of
drumming noise and
a kind of low “whom,
whom” noise. They
are both very quiet to
humans.
Hunting
 For part of the year Blue
Whales live in the
Antarctic and they eat at
least 6-7 tons of krill
everyday. Blue Whales
don’t really have any
predators, except for
killer whales when they
are young, and humans
in their whaling ships.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Blue Whales were not
hunted in the olden days because the
wooden ships were too slow to catch
them. But when ships were invented
with motors, almost all Blue Whales
were killed.
Distribution
 The Blue Whale lives in
Antarctica or the Artic,
and then travels to
warmer places, such as
Queensland, to have
their calves. A Blue
Whale will cover large
distances looking for
food and often swim
alone or with their
calves.
Five Interesting Facts
 Blue Whales have
been alive since
dinosaurs .
 They can swim up to
48km per hour.
 Blue Whales are the
most fussiest eaters.
 They are nearly as
blue as the ocean
which is how they got
their name.
What's Unique About Them
 They are the largest
living mammal ever
known. They’ve
been around so
long. Their pleated
skin allows them to
take in heaps of
food.
