Thee formats are based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association , 5 th ed.). Always refer to your instructor and the APA manual as final authorities for form, punctuation, spacing, etc. Source: American Psychological Association. (2001). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5 th ed.). Washington, D.C.: Author. Basic format: Author. (Date of Publication). Article title. Name of journal volume number, issue no., pages. Retrieved [month day, year,] from [source – database publisher][name of database] database. Consult: “Electronic Reference Formats Recommended by the American Psychological Association at their web site: http://www.apa.org/journals/webref.html Reference Citations In text (see 3.94 and following for multiple examples!!!). General formats: One author (3.94) (Smith, 2000) Two authors (3.95) Always cite both. (Smith & Jones, 2003) Three, Four, or Five authors (3.95) Cite surname for all authors the first time; the first author in subsequent references. Six or more. Cite only the surname of the first author followed by et al. For specific parts of a source, indicate page. (See 3.101) (Smith & Jones, 2003, p. 330) Note: “For electronic sources that do not provide page numbers, use the paragraph number, if available, preceded by the ¶ symbol.” (Sec. 3.101) Note from APA: 1. “For papers or manuscripts, either a regular paragraph indent or a hanging indent is appropriate for references, as long as the format is consistent throughout. 2. “ In addition, italics are used in place of underlining. As with the paragraph indent, either italics or underlining is acceptable in an APAstyle manuscript, providing they are used consistently.
