Census of India 2011
• Census in India is carried under Census Act 1948
• The Census of India 2011 will be the 15th Census
and the 7th after Independence.
• Census 2011 will mark a milestone as the National
Population Register (NPR) will also be prepared
• 1st Phase: Houselisting & Housing census and
collection of data on National Population Register
(1st May to 15th June 2010) - Completed
• 2nd Phase: Population Enumeration (9th to 28th
February 2011)

Maharashtra at a glance
•
The State has recorded 11,23,72,972 population against
9,68,78,627 in 2001, i.e., an addition of 1,54,94,345 during the
decade 2001-11.
•
This makes 15.99 percent growth rate during 2001-11. The
same was 22.73 during 1991-01.
•
This shows a reduction in growth rate by 6.74 percentage
points.
•
The total density is 365 persons per sq. Km. The same was 315
in 2001.

Sex composition of population
There are 5,83,61,397 males and 5,40,11,575 females in 2011.
The rate of growth is 15.8 percent for males and 16.2 percent
females.
First time after 1981, a higher growth rate of females over males
during 2001-11, brought some improvement in sex ratio .
So the sex ratio has increased from 922 to 925 during this period.
But the child sex ratio (age 0-6 years) is decreasing since 1991.

Districts at a glance
•
Thane is the biggest district with population 1,10,54,131
and constitutes about 9.84 percent of total population of
the state.
•
Next to Thane, Pune and Mumbai (sub-urban) are the
bigger districts with population 94,26,959 (8.4 percent)
and 93,32,481 (8.3 percent) respectively.
•
In 2001, Mumbai (sub-urban) was on the top with 8.9
percent share in the total state’s population.

Sindhudurg is the smallest district with population
8,48,868 which is barely 0.8 percent of State’s
population.
Gadchiroli is the second smallest district in terms of
population with a share of only one percent.
Hingoli, Washim and Bhandara with a share of
population 1.1 percent each are the other smaller
districts in terms of population.

First time after 1921, two districts viz., Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg
have registered negative growth rates -4.96 percent and -2.30
percent respectively.
Mumbai, though it had a negative growth during 1981-91, has
once again recorded negative growth rate -5.75percent in 2011.
The other districts in the ascending order of their low rate of
growth are Wardha (4.8 percent), Bhandara, (5.5 percent),
Chandrapur, (6.0 percent), Satara, (6.9 percent), Mumbai (Suburban) (8.0 percent), and Sangli (9.2 percent), where the rate of
growth in all these districts is less than 10 percent.
Highest population growth is in Thane where it is 35.94 percent.
Next to Thane, it is 30.3 percent in Pune, 27.3 percent in
Aurangabad, and 25.5 percent in Nandurbar .

Sex ratio in districts
Lowest sex ratio i.e., 838 is in Mumbai. It is 857 in Mumbai
(sub-urban) and 880 in Thane.
In all above three districts, the sex ratio has increased during
2001-11.
Pune, Bid, Aurngabad, Osmanabad, Jalgaon and Latur also
have sex ratio less than sex ratio at State level.
All above six districts have shown a declining trend in sex
ratio making the current sex ratio less than what they had in
2001.
Ratnagiri district has the highest sex ratio of 1123, followed
by Sindhudurg (1037), Gondiya (996), Satara (986) and
Bhandara (984).
Except in Bhandara, it has come down in all these districts as
compared to their sex ratio in 2001.

Population density in districts
Mumbai (sub-urban) and Mumbai districts tops in
density of population with about 20,925 and 20,038
population per sq. Km. respectively.
In Thane the density is 1,157 whereas Pune (603) and
Kolhapur (504) are the other districts with a density
more than 500.
Gadchiroli stands with the lowest density of 74 followed
by Sindhudurg (163), Chandrapur (192) and Ratnagiri
(196).

respectively.

literacy rate in Maharashtra, followed by
Nagpur, Sindhudurg and Gondiya districts.
• Mumbai (suburban) district has highest female
literacy rate in Maharashtra, followed by
Mumbai, Nagpur, Amravati and Akola districts.
