Book Shelf — Stressing "Freedom to Read", this year's observance of National Library Week
will begin on April 21st. National Library Week was first
launched in 1958, the first concerted nationwide effort to focus
public attention on reading as a
source of personal fulfillment , on
the importance of reading in our
national life, and on the libraries which, if used fully and supported properly, can make reading materials accessible to everybody . Next week we will list
some of the outstanding books of
the past year, available at your
library.
Artist's Canvas — It has been
said that the uniqueness of Gauguin's art consisted not only in
his subject, but also in his conception of these subjects, such
as in his efforts to reconcile the
barbarous character of Maori idols with the sensitivity of a European artist. Living in the jungle of Tahiti, Gauguin's imagination was tremendously stimulated
by his lovely and peaceful surroundings. In 1891 he painted
"Tahitian Landscape", unfolding
the mystic charm of a tropical
landscape. This Gauguin painting,
26 3/4 x 36 3/8 ", is included
in your library's collection of art
reproductions, available on loan.
Children's World — The children will hear all about "Cats
and Kittens" at this Thursday's
(April 18th) story sessions, with
two poems and three stories
scheduled on. the theme. The
"Midnight Ride of Paul Revere",
one of two films to be shown Friday evening (April 19th) recreates the ride of April 18, 1775.
The program will also include
"Tom Tit Tot", an old English
fairy tale.
