AREA ATTRACTIONS
The Lancetilla Botanic Garden
The Lancetilla Bontanical Garden is the world’s second largest botanical garden of its kind, and the
largest in the Americas. With over 2,000 species, it encompasses a nature reserve and plantations. The
United Fruit Company established the site in 1926, to collect and grow different species sourced from
other tropical areas around the world. It has become a part of the Honduran biological corridor that
preserves the natural environment and safeguards migrating mammals. The garden includes a diverse
collection of flora and fauna, and a large number of tropical birds have made the gardens their home
with the abundance of fruit trees. The wide system of footpaths allows for easy hiking by foot or biking.
Guided tours allow for a close-up experience with natural flora, with the opportunity to taste indigenous
fruits. 15 km / 9.5 miles (16 min)
Jeanette Kawas National Park - Punta Sal
Jeanette Kawas National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Honduras. The ancient mangrove
forests and barrier reefs are some of the best preserved within the mainland and outlying islands. A
tropicalrainforest is a haven for howler monkeys, panthers, and other wildlife. The sandy beaches are
lined with almond and coconut trees. You’ll also get a glimpse of Garifuna life – from their fishing
culture to vernacular buildings scattered within the park's boundaries. Arrival is by boat and you can
also sightsee one of the area’s two lagoons: Los Micos and El Diamante), or kayak off the coast which
also includes excellent opportunity to snorkel. You can also simply enjoy the area’s beautiful beaches on
horseback.14 km / 9 miles (15 min)
Pico Bonito National Park
Pico Bonito is one of the most diverse protected areas in Central America, and its majestic peak reaches
2435 meters above sea level. The Park habitats range from the cloud forest in the higher elevations to
the tropical rain forest and narrow coastal plains which are a few feet above sea level. The hiking trails
throughout the area lead to waterfalls and rich habitat of birds, flora and fauna. Canopy tours and Class
II – IV white water rapids are additional activities making the area most unique in all of Honduras. 90
km / 56 miles (60 min)
Cuero y Salado
Tropical jungle, mangroves, and a network of waterways, lagoons, and canals make up this wildlife
refuge high in biodiversity. Over 200 bird species have been identified, and the area has provided a
haven for the endangered Caribbean manatee. Alligators, howler and capuchin monkeys, jaguar, and
white tail deer have made this area their home. Kayaking and canoeing expeditions through the heavily
forested mangroves can be arranged. 48 km / 30 miles (40 min)
Punta Izopo National Park
Punta Izopo National Park is a protected area of tropical jungle located east of Tela. Two rivers flow into
the area creating a small coastal lagoon with many canals surrounded by thick mangrove forests that are
teeming with wildlife, including crocodiles, waterfowl, howler and capuchin monkeys, as well as a
myriad of colorful birds. Arrival is by kayak on the Platano River and a guide will steer you through the
park’s terrain of dense vegetation, canals, and mangroves.

“Capiro Bank” Coral Reef
The Capiro Bank is a newly discovered reef that has been described as a “real Caribbean rarity.” It is
under close watch by local marine biologists given its high resiliency and inhibited growth of algae
greatly affecting coral reef systems throughout the Caribbean. There is a large presence of Elkhorn coral
and an endangered species of sea urchin thriving here, which had been almost entirely wiped out by
disease several decades ago. The reef is one of the healthiest found throughout the region, blanketing
the ocean floor along the stretch of Tela Bay for several kilometers. 8 km / 5 miles (9 min)
