cated o l w o N ey! in Seel May-june 2015 Vol. 7, No. 1 Tuesday-Thursday 10 – 6 Fridays 10 – 7 • Saturdays 10 – 5 (715) 798-5001 13471 N Hwy 63 • Hayward, WI 54843 [email protected] www.fireflytradingcompany.com Surprise for me! Firefly Clothing Card It was a total surprise when we decided to rent the Seeley building. Especially to us. We do that every once in awhile – surprise ourselves that is. I hope you do too. So the story is there were a few things that came together in the nick of time to nudge us toward this idea. And so we went to markets and then to Arizona. We were gone for 6 weeks. Before we left, we got the ball rolling on all the nuts and bolts stuff that goes into changing locations. You don’t want to know. We don’t really want you to know all the business decisions… just enjoy the end results! We keep track of your clothing purchases and give you a discount! We will get you going with a Firefly Clothing Card when you purchase at least $100 of regularly priced clothing. And then every time you spend a $100 (on regularly priced clothing), we give you 10% off your next clothing purchase, even on the same day. And we keep the card for you! So if you don’t already have a card, we will get you started. Everyone loves it. It is just a little way we can give you a break from the day we open and all the days when the selection is the very best. The new location of Firefly is physically smaller and brighter but just as warm and colorful as the old shop. A new palate of colors grew from our new logo. I am thrilled to be able to work with so many local experts and craftsman who have had a hand in getting this place ready. And then there are the many volunteers who showed up to help with painting and arranging and so many important things. Thank you hardly covers it. You know who you are. Meet Karen Rosen The new shop is open 5 days a week, Tuesday – Saturday. So I am getting a trimmer life and two days off in a row. We are open LATE on Friday nights so you can shop before or after your fish fry or martini night at Mooselips or whatever you have planned. Because you know, Highway 63 is quite the highway and it takes us all so many places we want to go. So our focus is more on clothing and accessories but you know I can’t resist art. Just can’t. So you will find some lovely things in the way of artwork and you will still find our great cards, a few kitchen items and a few gifts. All really good stuff that you already like. We are opening May 20th and closing after Labor Day…date to be determined. As always if you want to stay in touch with shop happenings and dates just sign up for our email at www.fireflytradingcompany.com. It is super easy and we try to send you messages that you will want! So here we go. and her very popular bracelets! After 15 years of crafting log homes, and another 15 years teaching 3rd graders, my husband Mark and I are moving from Northern Minnesota, “south” to Seeley. We are drawn to the natural beauty of the area, the extensive trail systems, and the active outdoor community. What we weren’t expecting, and now equally appreciate, are the wonderfully vibrant people who have welcomed us so warmly. We spend our days working on our new home, skiing, hiking, biking, cutting loads of firewood, and spending time with our 2 grown children and the world’s greatest granddaughter. I have always liked to dabble in art, but what brought me to beading and wrap bracelets was more a matter of time and circumstance, rather than a well thought out plan. Retirement afforded me the time to pursue interests that for many years eluded me. I had just begun experimenting with beading and wrap bracelet design, when we took a trip to visit our son in Berlin, Germany. There we found the Knoft Paul Button Store. I couldn’t believe my luck, and soon found myself immersed for hours in floor to ceiling buttons at …That was the beginning, and the simple internal signal that nudged me in the direction of my bracelets - each closed with a Berlin button. It’s funny how these serendipitous quirks of fate work. Mine has now evolved into a small business of crafting bracelets, completing my own web site and sharing a presence with other artists at Firefly. Featured Artist Adu Gindy-Bertas “On the Wild Side” Join us for an Artist Reception and Remarks June 5, from 5 – 7 Adu has been coming to Firefly for years. The first year we had clothing, Adu discovered us one Fall day. She was looking for a new black top and loved the fabric of Barbara Lesser (as do we all). She told me that unfortunately she had had paint on her black turtleneck. Paint, I ask? Yes, I am a painter. Of course now I am really interested. Adu’s life began in Estonia. She came to the U.S. in 1950 as a child. She graduated from Vassar (BA), Columbia teacher’s College (MAT), and the University of Minnesota (MFA). The taught art at UM Duluth until her recent retirement. She lives in Minneapolis and Hayward with her husband. I suggested we call this first showing “On the Wild Side” because to me her work, often depicting animals in fun and whimsical ways, just captures the idea of “wild side”. Her work “Foxy Lady” is pictured here. It is hanging above our fireplace. No one has ever referred to me as foxy before and I have found it a little inspiring! She painted three other paintings after Foxy Lady. “Here are some thoughts about the three paintings which followed “Foxy Lady.” I have always loved bright colors and the use of animal imagery. I was drawn to your shop for your inspired use of color and design. Each painting has a doorway like format with a brightly painted creature “greeting” the viewer. In your painting the “Foxy Lady” was you. In the other paintings the fun loving creatures can be anyone's alter ego. Hopefully we all have a "wild side." The red lines in the paintings reference the lines we all cross at times or not depending on what issues we are dealing with or with whom. One can take this to the political realm as well. Anyway, it's my way of visualizing thoughts as I paint. It's another “layer of thought.” Returns We want you to be happy with your selections! We are a small store with a short Summer season so if you are returning something it has to be back to us fast. So clothing returns must be made within 10 days, tags on, with the receipt. No credit card or cash refunds. All returns are for store credit. Sale merchandise is sold “as is” and is not returnable. No returns on jewelry. We hope you will understand. Ree Drummond’s Maple Oat Nut Scones Cheryl Harrison brought these back in April. When someone who is volunteering to help you get your shop painted and they bring fabulous scones, it is a very good day. I follow Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, on Facebook and so enjoy her recipes, her love of her family, and her sense of humor. Cheryl says this recipe isn’t too hard…but al of thought they were delicious. Some ate more than one, but I’m not naming names. • 2-3/4 cups All-purpose Flour • 1/2 cup Regular Oats, Ground in a Food Processor or Blender • 1/3 cup Sugar • 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder • 1/4 teaspoon Salt • 2 sticks (1 Cup) Cold Butter, Cut Into Cubes • 1/2 cup Pecans, Finely Chopped • 3/4 cups Heavy Cream (more If Needed) • 1 whole Egg • 1 teaspoon Maple Extract • Icing • 5 cups Powdered Sugar • 1/4 cup Whole Milk • 2 Tablespoons Melted Butter • 2 Tablespoons Strong Coffee • 2 teaspoons Maple Extract Preparation Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • In a large bowl, combine flour, ground oats, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine. • Add butter pieces and use a pastry cutter to work the butter and dry ingredients together until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped pecans. • Whisk together the cream, egg, and 1 teaspoon maple extract. Pour into flour mixture, stirring gently, until it all comes together. (Mixture will not come together in one cohesive ball; it should be in a few large clumps with some crumbs in the bowl.) If it is overly crumbly and will not come together at all, add a couple of tablespoons of extra cream and work it in. • Turn the dough out onto a cutting board or floured surface and use your hands to press into a 6-to-8-inch circle about 3/4 inch thick. Cut into 8 equal wedges (or you can cut into smaller wedges to get more.) Transfer to a baking sheet lined with a baking mat or parchment and bake for 20-24 minutes, or until poufy and set and just barely golden. (Shouldn't have much color on them at all.) Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. • Combine all the icing ingredients. Make sure it's thick but still pourable. Drizzle a very generous amount on each one, then sprinkle on a few more chopped pecans. Allow the icing to set completely, then serve. Scones will keep nice and fresh for days in a plastic zipper bag. (715) 798-5001 • 13471 N Hwy 63 • Hayward, WI 54843 [email protected] • www.fireflytradingcompany.com
