How to use interactive
notebooks
Tough guise 2 :
violence, manhood &
American culture
1 DVD (15 min.)
1 DVD (78 min.)
Lots of experienced and
talented teachers know that
interactive notebooks are
great tools for instruction and
learning in the classroom. This
15 minute program shares
this secret and shows how to
use interactive notebooks
effectively in any grade and
subject.
In this highly anticipated
update of the influential and
widely acclaimed Tough Guise,
pioneering anti-violence
educator and cultural theorist
Jackson Katz argues that the
ongoing epidemic of men's
violence in America is rooted
in our inability as a society to
move beyond outmoded ideals
of manhood.
Confronting drunk driving
1 DVD (ca. 27 min.) + 1 teacher's resource book on CD-ROM
This memorable video features the true story of Mike Poveromo, a young man who killed his two
best friends in a drunk driving car crash when he was a teenager. Today, Mike tours the
nationœs high schools to share his story, and to warn students never to drink and drive. In
addition to interview segments that recount Mikeœs dramatic story, viewers will also hear from
law enforcement officers who explain the legal risks involved in drinking and driving, including
harsh jail sentences for those convicted of driving under the influence (DUI). Viewers will also
hear from emergency room physicians who describe the traumas and deaths they have seen as a
result of drunk driving. Teens will also hear from parents and family members who have been
left devastated by the loss of a child as a result of drunk driving. In addition, Confronting Drunk
Driving offers important tips for how to avoid being a passenger in a car driven by an intoxicated
driver. Teacher’s Resource Book offers many useful and thought-provoking worksheets for
classroom use.
The qatsi trilogy
3 DVDs (274 min.)
“Astonishingly photographed, and featuring unforgettable, cascading scores by Philip Glass,
these are immersive sensory experiences that meditate on the havoc humankind's obsession
with technological advancement has wreaked on our world"--Container.
Koyaanisqatsi. This first work of The Qatsi Trilogy wordlessly surveys the rapidly changing
environments of the Northern hemisphere, in an astonishing collage created by the director,
cinematographer Ron Fricke, and composer Philip Glass. It shuttles viewers from one jawdropping vision to the next, moving from images of untouched nature to others depicting human
beings, increasing dependence on technology.
Powaqqatsi. Reggio turns his sights on third-world nations in the Southern hemisphere. Forgoing
the sped-up aesthetic of the first film, Powaqqatsi employs a meditative slow motion in order to
reveal the beauty of the traditional ways of life in those parts of the planet, and to show how
cultures there are being eroded as their environments are taken over by industry.
Naqoyqatsi. Through a variety of cinematic techniques, including slow motion, time-lapse,
computer-generated imagery, and found footage, the film tells of a world that has completed the
transition from the natural to the artificial. Globalization has been accomplished, all of our
interactions are technologically mediated, and all images are manipulated.
Hills and valleys : teen depression
1 DVD (16 min.)
Discusses the symptoms of depression, providing information about what a young person can do
when feeling depressed, as well as what is normal and how long feelings of depression might
last. Strives to draw the distinction between normal and clinical depression.
For grades 6-12
