On our cover...
Mount Vernon’s South Main Street is enjoying
a renaissance as downtown campuses are being
created for Central Ohio Technical College (COTC)
and Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU).
As is typical for our community the effort has been
propelled by effective collaboration of the two institutions, generous private donors and, of course,
The Community Foundation. Our cover photo
reveals COTC’s Ariel Hall in mid-renovation in the
lower right corner and, to the left on the west side
of South Main Street, MVNU’s new Hunter Hall,
opening in the fall of 2011 as the new home of the
“BAKER BROS.” cafe in MVNU’s new Hunter Hall
MVNU School of Nursing. The Buchwald Center,
immediately to the north of Hunter Hall opened in
September of 2009 housing the MVNU Department
of Art and Schnormeier Gallery; however, a fall
2010 blaze that destroyed the former retail and office building on the southwest corner of South Main
and Gambier Streets forced its temporary closure.
MVNU acquired the razed corner property and is in
the process of creating a mixed-use cityscape.
One block north on South Main Street other
Foundation-assisted projects are giving Downtown
Mount Vernon a new look, such as the renovation of
the Odd Fellows Hall as a home for the Renaissance
Foundation, and improvements to the Place at the
Woodward performance space, part of the larger
Woodward Opera House Restoration, which has
also enjoyed significant Foundation support.

Assets surpass $35 million
in comeback year for the
Community Foundation
Adherence to sound investment practices, coupled with more
than $1.5 million in new donor investment, propelled the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County to a record high
year-end asset value of $35,670,127 on December 31, 2010. Like
other philanthropic organizations operating in this unpredictable
economy, the Foundation looks to protect its gains by emphasizing
fundamentals: maintaining a well-structured investment portfolio,
controlling costs, and demonstrating great value to prospective
donors.
On the grant making side of operations, Foundation board
members continue to scrutinize applications for unrestricted fund
grants with the goal of effecting the greatest benefit for the greatest number of Knox County residents. Listed further below are the
beneficiaries of more than $400,000 distributed in our competitive
grants program, while the remaining recipients
of nearly $1.9 million in total grants are detailed
in the alphabetical directory of scholarship, designated, donor-advised and unrestricted funds,
beginning on page 9.
The board and staff of the Community Foundation are most
gratified that, economic conditions notwithstanding, contributions
to our more than 288 funds have sustained at, or near, historic
levels. In 2010 we were pleased to add 12 new named funds to the
Foundation and, as in years past, we are pleased to recognize them
in this annual report to the community.
The Geraldine “Gerri” Dennis Scholarship Fund, for the benefit of Mount Vernon High School graduates, created by Kenneth E.
Dennis, family and friends, in memory of Gerri Dennis;
The Beverly Jo Dremann Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund, established by Arthur K. Dremann in memory of his late
wife, for the benefit of Fredericktown High School graduates;
The Blake and Chloris Fritz Scholarship Fund, created by
Blake Fritz and friends in memory of Chloris A. Fritz, for the benefit
of graduating seniors of Mount Vernon High School; and
The Justin T. Richert Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Justin T. Richert by family members, to benefit a graduating
member of the Mount Vernon High School golf team, of which
Justin had been a member.
The Vaughn Wiester Music Scholarship Fund was established
at year-end in honor of Wiester’s extraordinary music career since
graduating from Mount Vernon High School in the early 1960s.
The fund will provide scholarships to aspiring musicians from Knox
County high schools. Beginning in 2011 proceeds from an annual
benefit concert in the Knox County Memorial Theater, featuring
the Vaughn Wiester Famous Jazz Orchestra, will contribute to the
fund’s principal.
Three new organization funds also came into
existence in 2010, extending the benefits of
pooled investing within the Community Foundation to three additional non-profit organizations.
These included: the Sandra K. Barrick Fund for the Knox County
Humane Society, the Community Concerts Association of Knox
County Fund, and the Faith Lutheran Church Mission Fund. The
assets of all three funds are accessible by the organizations according to guidelines they establish with the Foundation’s consent at
the time of fund creation. Long-term adherence to these distribution guidelines is assured by oversight of the Community Foundation Board of Directors.
Contributions from Carolyn Allar and Toma Lord created the
Carolyn Lord Knox County Symphony Fund for the Double Bass,
a designated fund which will provide an annual stipend for a Knox
County Symphony musician.
Finally, the Community Foundation was pleased to welcome
Noel and Suzanne Parrish as contributors to its Legacy Society
Fund. Members of our Legacy Society have the opportunity to
establish a charitable fund with a minimum initial gift of $1,000,
and add to their fund with periodic contributions of any amount,
until fund maturity is reached at the $5,000 level, at which time
distributions may be made. (Please contact us, if you are interested
in learning more about our Legacy Society Fund.)

New Funds of the Foundation
Seven of the new funds augment our already impressive
scholarship category, which in 2010 accounted for $728,000 in
post-secondary awards to Knox County high school seniors and
non-traditional students. Scholarship funds added in 2010 were:
The Aljian-Barnes Scholarship Fund, established by Gregory
and Dee Barnes to assist graduates of Fredericktown High School
with medical-related studies;
The American Legion Post #136 Scholarship Fund, created
by the trustees of Post #136 for children, grandchildren and stepchildren of members of a Knox County veterans’ organization;
Five remembered with

New Community Foundation funds
were established in 2010 as perpetual
memorials to these community activists, volunteers and family loved ones.
They were (from left) The Sandra K.
Barrick Fund for the Knox County Humane Society, The Geraldine “Gerri”
Dennis Scholarship Fund, The Beverly
Jo Dremann Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund, The Blake and

Additional grant making activities
Not to be overlooked are substantial recurring annual distributions from the Community Foundation’s many designated funds.
The foresight of generous donors, who typically created these
funds with gifts from their estates, was responsible for approximately $243,000 in 2010 grants to churches, schools, social services
organizations, and others. Scholarship awards of more than
$750,000, and donor-advised distributions of some $465,000, accounted for the remainder of nearly $2 million of total Foundation
grant making during the year.
New board members elected in 2010
The Foundation Board of Directors elected three new members to fill vacancies due to term limits which occurred between
December 2009 and December 2010. Newly elected to the board
were: Gene Jackson, manager of the Mount Vernon branch of PNC
Bank, nominated by the Chamber of Commerce to replace Joan
Jones; Marsha Rinehart, Executive Vice President of Kokosing
Construction Co., selected at-large by the board to replace Ronald
Godfrey; and Gordon E. Yance, nominated by First-Knox National
Bank to replace Mark Ramser. You will find our complete board
membership on the inside back cover of this report.
Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County
Retiring Chair Mark Ramser
reflects on the Foundation’s
increased community profile
Three grant making areas come to mind that have had a
tremendous impact on the Knox County community in recent
years. First, grants have been made to Central Ohio Technical
College, Kenyon College, and Mount Vernon Nazarene
University, with the majority of those funds invested in
physical facilities in downtown Mount Vernon.
Second, the Foundation has made important contributions
to the acquisition of land for Foundation Park, Wolf Run
Regional Park, Fredericktown’s Mill Street Park, and The
Falls at Honey Run. I cannot reference the Foundation’s
green space acquisition efforts without giving due credit to
another of my predecessors as chair, William “Bill” Stroud. Bill
established a “Special Projects Fund” with annual set-asides
from our general fund grants budget to enable the Foundation
to seize upon opportunities for
park land acquisition, and the
aforementioned properties were
all purchased with these funds.
Finally, with respect to grant
making, the number and dollar
amount of academic scholarships
has significantly increased,
financially assisting Knox County
students in achieving their
academic goals. Scholarships in
1997 totalled $170,000 compared
to more than $750,000 awarded in
2010.
During the last 14 years I have been privileged to serve
on the board of The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon
and Knox County and its predecessor organization, the Mount
Vernon/Knox County Community Trust. In the process of
composing my final observations as Chair of the Foundation, I
looked back on more than a decade’s worth of annual reports
and was reminded of the significant changes that transpired
during those years.
The first of these dramatic
transformations is reflected in the
name of the organization itself.
Then a “Community Trust,” now a
“Community Foundation,” the change
is more than superficial.
The number of board members –
five, plus a secretary – had remained
unchanged since the “Trust” was
founded in 1944. The addition of six
at-large members between 1999
and 2002 has enhanced the board’s
geographic base and expertise. The

Note to the financial statements:
The Community Foundation is following the provisions of FASB
ASC 958-605-50 Transfers of Assets to a Not-for-Profit Organization
or Charitable Trust that Raises or Holds Contributions for Others. This
provision establishes standards for transactions in which a community
foundation accepts a contribution from a donor and agrees to transfer
those assets, the return on investment of those assets, or both to
another entity that is specified by the donor. Under this provision, if a
not-for-profit organization establishes a fund at a community foundation with its own funds and specifies itself as the beneficiary of that
fund, the community foundation must account for the transfer of such
assets as a liability. The Foundation refers to such funds as agency or
“organization” funds. The Foundation maintains variance power and
legal ownership of agency funds and as such continues to report the
funds as assets of the Foundation. However, in accordance with FASB
ASC 958-605-50, a liability has been established for the fair value of
the funds.
Independent auditors’ report for 2010
To the Board of Directors of
The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County,
We have audited the accompanying statement of financial position of the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon &
Knox County (the Foundation) as of December 31, 2010 and 2009, and the related statements of activities and cash flows for
the years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Foundation’s management. Our responsibility
is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits.
We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America.
Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial
statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts
and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits
provide a reasonable basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of
the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County as of December 31, 2010 and 2009, and the results of operations
and its cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States
of America.
As described in Note 9 to the financial statements, the Foundation has restated the 2009 financial statements to reflect
assets held by the Foundation that are funds held as custody funds as a liability on the financial statements, rather than as net
assets of the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County.

Ramser, Godfrey conclude service on Foundation Board
Two Community Foundation board members completed their terms in 2010. Board Chair Mark Ramser (left) had served since January
1997 when he was nominated by First-Knox National Bank to complete the unexpired term of Kenneth Stevenson. He subsequently
served two terms of his own, assuming the chairmanship of the Foundation in 2000 upon the retirement of Chair Maureen Buchwald.
Ronald Godfrey joined the Foundation Board in July 2001 as a member of an “expansion class” which increased membership to its
current levels. Both Ramser and Godfrey served with distinction on the Foundation’s Distribution subcommittee during their tenures.

May we assist you in achieving your philanthropic goals?
Virtually all of the endowed funds listed on the preceding pages were created as the result of an inquiry made by a
prospective donor to an attorney or estate planner, to the Community Foundation staff, or to a board member. If
you desire to “leave a legacy” to your community be assured there is no better partner than a community foundation.
Let us explain how effortlessly you can establish a named fund that could provide college scholarships, funds for
our competitive grants program, annual support for a designated charity, or grants for different charities each year
through a donor-advised fund. Our minimun contribution to create a named fund is still just $5,000, or just $1,000 as
a Legacy Society member. Interested? Call us today at 740.392.3270 or e-mail: [email protected].
